hahahaaaaa... I'm famous... I was watching the highlights of England U19 v Switzerland U19 on Sky Sports...
when England scored the first goal I was in the queue for the coffee stand at the end of the pitch.. so I was really close to the Swiss goal..
when we scored the camera panned across onto me jumping up and down going loopy...

having been on telly.. it is now official...

I'm now famous...

those of you requiring signed merchendise please contact my office.. lol..

Zinc - yup.... just a few more to go.....

"post with me for a bit"?????

you gonna be my wingman.. lmao..

Keniko - ok.. so you know how to generate chords... this is good...
if you wanted to deliberately sit within the tonality of a specific mode, then the same stuff applies... it'll just sound a little different..

for example.. a I - IV - V progression in Em would be:
Em - Am - Bm

if you used E Dorian it would be a little different
Em - A - Bm

and a VI - II - V - I in C would be:
Am - Dm - G - C
but in C Mixolydian it would be:
Am - Dm - Gm - C

goofing around with chord progressions modally can be fun. You'll find that some stuff works well and other stuff sounds either a bit crap, or feels like it's strongly pulling towards the tonic of the center key... just like our Mixolydian VI - II - V - I will pull real hard to resolve to F [chord I of the key from which C Mixolydian is derived]...

but don't stop at this....
being a mindless neo-classical shred hooligan, if I encounter chord V, and it's Vm.. my spider senses tingle and make me want to shift it to V7 so that I can melt frets via the harmonic minor or the melodic minor ascending scales...

so look at our I - IV - V in Em..
we had the chords Em - Am - Bm
hahaa.. so for me the Bm is substituted for a B7 giving
Em - Am - B7 : then I can go tear-up in E harmonic minor when the B7 is soundig...
what's to stpo you doing this in the modal equivalent progression?? nothing at at...

so our I - IV - V in E Dorian is:
Em - A - Bm

which I'd modify to
Em - A - B7
I'd play Dorian over the Em and A chords and rip up on the B7 using E harmonic minor..

in other circumstances, I'd actually be inclined at some point to use the A as a "pivot chord" to launch me into a new key..
I'd make it an A7 to trigger a perfect cadence into either:
the key of D
the key of Dm
a mode in D [D Dorian, D Phrygian etc etc]
or I'd enharmonically shift the notes of D7 and call it a German 6th which will take me into the keys centered around the tonic of Db / C#

and being a 7-string player... that is a neo-classical thug..

the thought of slipping from D Dorian into C#m to get low down and dirty via a German 6th in D to trigger a perfect cadence in C#m is highly appealing...

in fact.... I like this idea so much....

I'm going to steal it from Clarky when he's not looking...

Yoda - here's a thought......
would you class a harm min and a mel min scale as a synthetic scale because it was derived from the Diatonic minor simply to satisfy a cadencial event in a minor key??
personally.. I do consider these guys as synthetic because they are transitory moments within the greater scheme of things [from a tonal point of view]..
but jazzers may see things differently... simply because they are jazzers...

anyways... nice comments to Keniko's question... very nice indeed...

hahaaa... is "Clarky-style" becoming predictable??
or is it that I simply have not style... lmao...

and this comment:
"The most important thing to do is just experiment with stuff, and see what comes out."
is something I whole heartedly endorse as you'll know from conversations and jam sessions we've had ourselves...
experimentation and composition are the only real paths to fully understand the applied aspects of what you're learning and are the best ways to flex the muscles of creativity..

nice one bro..

if you're interested...
take a little look at my German 6th idea... I'd imagine you'll find it interesting.. especially working out the enharmonically shifted notes.. like a nice little crossword puzzle..
ad it'll sound very sweet indeed..
if you need a little help with the math give me a bell on the mobe..

TONIGHT I'M GONNA PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999 ! ! ! ! !

Hey Joe... sounds familliar I guess, but seriously, did you know what a "sater" means?? I've been watching lately some fantasy movies, and apparently a "sater" is a very skillfull flute player who plays for nymphs who are dancing on his music, did you know that? I didn't, and I find the name resemblance with your own and the fact that you are a very skillful player too, striking! let me know if you will, what do you think about that. and another thing, when are you comming to the north of Holland to play, here up north you have a lot of fans too, you know, yours friendly, dj7

Do The Stu

Welcome back. So, do I take it you are not going to watch the NBC special about Lennon's killer?

I wouldn't have remembered the anniversary of his death was coming up - I probably won't watch it - since I can find better things to do.

The Cure to hit studio in January

TORONTO (Billboard) - The Cure plans to hit the studio in January to record its next album, according to a post from frontman Robert Smith on the group's Web site http://www.thecure.com

"We are still on course for a summer release, as it's all in the preparation," he said.

The-as-yet-untitled effort will be the Cure's first since keyboardist Roger O'Donnell and guitarist Perry Bamonte left the band earlier this year (former guitarist Porl Thompson has since rejoined). It will be the follow-up to 2004's "The Cure," which has sold 317,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Smith also said that he is close to completing the next phase of the band's expanded reissue series, which will include 1984's "The Top," 1985's "The Head on the Door" and 1987's "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, as well as "The Blue Sunshine," a 1983 album Smith and Steve Severin, the guitarist with Siouxsie and the Banshees, created under the name the Glove. The sets should be out by next spring.

In addition, Smith is assembling a live DVD from the Cure's summer performances and "writing some film music," according to his message.

Another Guns N' Roses hits package due next month

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Geffen Records has set a December 20 release date for its second Guns N' Roses hits package in less than two years.

The double-disc set "Welcome to the Jungle -- The Very Best of Guns N' Roses" follows "Greatest Hits," which has sold 2.5 million copies in the United States since its release in March 2004, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The track list for the new package has yet to be announced.

Guns N' Roses, which now features lone original member Axl Rose, has been at work for years on a new studio album, "Chinese Democracy." It is unknown when the album will see the light of day.

962 - The thinness surprised me too. There should be enough mahogany to give more fullness even with the thin body. I'l report back once I get it back from the tech.

Waterproof - Yae I would have to agree on the Black Star. I haven't heard that song in a long time but all the phrasing was right on and all the overlayed parts were there too. If it is him therre was a lot of production time.

Good Morning Satchland...... How are you guy's?

Zen.... Nice movement. Interesting music. I suspect the overs on the tape Stevee T was talking about caused the scratching sounds (clipping) upfront and couldn't really hear what was going on for the first half of your movement. The second half sounded cleaner. The movement I was working on has bass and drums and may or may not fit. I'll email you a snipit over the weekend. You be the judge. Let me know.

Clarky.... Wow ! ! ! ! You gave me a lot of info. Thanks for that great response. Like Neil's reponse....I emailed yours also to myself for further reference. I've decieced to work on the pitch axis theory and slowly work into writing progressions using both of your guys' ideas. I still want hang on to my Blues/Rock influences cause that's me. At the same time I want to sound a little different. I don't want to be just another Pentatonic scale guitarist. The approches you and Neil have given me will send me in that direction...I hope...lol...Theory is interesting but like I said I could be opening up a theory Pandora's box...lol..... but I'm taking the plunge. Wish me luck.

Have A Great Day Everybody ! ! ! !

Edit.... BTW....Clarky....Happy 2000 Post's

How about a little comedy. A nightmare for us beer drinkers..

A man and his wife were sitting in the living room and he said to her, "Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug."

His wife got up, unplugged the TV and threw out all of his beer.

I shrudder the thought......

Finally (yesterday) bought "G3 Live in Tokyo" ... excellent!!! Just watched/listened it again, this time with my sons; they immediately formed a band and jammed with it all the way taking turns on guitar / drums!

...Didn't know mr. Dave LaRue was playing with mr. Petrucci; I've known him as Steve Morse Band's (and reunited Dixie Dregs') bass-wizard...nice surprise!

...The commentaries with the soundcheck are a magnificent addition for this kind of work of art!

...nothing wrong with the balance of each 3 G:s in my copy; I can here mr. Petrucci perfectly on the right during the Jam!

.....Really looking forward to mr. Satriani's new studio album!!!

Everybody have a nice weekend; I'm exhausted (of advicing superiors who don't want to admit that they might be wrong...and about to do serious mistakes...Not very pleasent/uplifting/rewarding, but that's my job as an expert) ... Gonna go to movies: "Wallace and Gromit: The curse of the Were-Rabbit" with the junior, while the older son goes to watch new Harry Potter with mommy.

Madonna loses plagiarism case

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A Belgian songwriter has won a court battle against pop star Madonna after accusing her of plagiarising one of his songs for her 1998 hit single, "Frozen," his lawyer said on Friday.

Salvatore Acquaviva's lawyer said a court in the southern Belgian town of Mons had ordered the country's music stores to withdraw the record from their shelves within the next 15 days.

The court also ordered radio and television stations to stop playing the song, he said.

"(They) cannot broadcast the work 'Frozen' ... under pain of a 150,000-euro fine," he told the local radio network, RTBF.

It was not immediately clear if damages were awarded to Acquaviva.

howdy everyone! - in case you didn't see 'em yet, here are the winners for the G3 LIVE IN TOKYO contest! i've answered other questions below...

Grand Prize Winner:
Luke Davis (Luke287)

Other Winners:
david wren (njbeast)
Jonathan Affleck (imjon)
Tye Masaki (tmasaki)
Stuart Fielding (stuart09)
Andrea Patron (wolk)
aaron sim (sim2001)
Jenifer Novak (Jenister)
Daniel Swords (DanielSwords)
simon harris (sih)

ANSWERS TO OTHER QUESTIONS

autographed versions of G3 Live In Tokyo - i tried to make this happen, but unfortunately, all three guys' schedules have them all around the place so we couldn't get them all in one place to make it happen this time around!

nascar 06 clips - i asked for some rights to put some stuff up, but nothing has come through yet. the video game world is a little different than joe's usual releases so it's not as much of a no-brainer. if anything comes through, you can count on me putting it up :} in the meantime, the only way i'm aware of getting the music is by buying a copy of the game.

in general - as you've probably noticed, i haven't been too present lately, this is because recently i became a dad for the 2nd time! all of my available time is being spent making sure the critical work stuff happens (like the satch contest!) but i'm starting to catch up a bit and will be around a little more often.
