Clarky, with all due respect, that practice routine isn't aimed at someone of an ability and experience such as yours. I have found it works really well with students of mine who need it, 'cause it provides them with a decent level of focus and structure without each bit being dragged out too much.

Blue Moon, nice, a 10 hour work out is just what every guitar player needs.
alter_ego_of_joe, no problem!

Yeah, regards question 1) What I was saying is that the free-practice is, for most people, a fun element. If you put it at the end of your routine you feel more compelled to work through the first 4 stages so you can get onto stage 5, the free practice element.

If you were to start your practice with the free practice element, you'd no longer have it to look forward to at the end so you're less likely to be as committed to working through all the other 4 stages!

Question 2) er, 3 octave scales? I don't think I said anything about those! Anyway, what I was saying is that I take a 1-octave scale as a move-able pattern and play it in all keys, starting in F at the first fret (on the E String) and going up to F again at the 13th fret (also on the E string!).

Question 3) I use soundclick for putting tunes on the net. You need to make sure your tunes are in mp3 format and stored on your hard drive. Then sign up to soundclick and create an artist account, rather than a listener account. It's free and an easy process to sign up. And then you can start uploading tunes. Go to http://www.soundclick.com to check it out. If you find it makes absolutely no sense just let me know!

Guitarmiester,

1. Eric Johnson - World Of Trouble (or anything by him really, his tone is stunning) 2. Andy Timmons - Electric Gypsy 3. Nuno Bettencourt - Spaceman 4. Joe - Hill Groove, and The Crush Of Love on LISF 5. Paul Gilbert - B.R.O.

ovation1, do you have all of Paul Gilbert's solo records? I got King Of Clubs Today, it's so damn cool man! Pablo is so awesome! So now I have that, Flying Dog, Burning Organ and Spaceship One.
LucySorets, you're welcome! Yeah it's cool to hear EJ's playing at such a young age....it's quite incredible really!
Austin, ha, I only stumbled across it today 'cause I got an e-newsletter from guitar9.com and I happened to notice the name "Mariani" on the list.

I would imagine Eric wasn't happy with it because the playing, in terms of phrasing, note selecton and so on, is so average compared to how he is now.

That's the sort of extreme judgement I can imagine EJ making against himself....he wouldn't care that he was only 14 at the time! Anyway, it's cool to hear....dunno yet if I'll get it, I kind of feel I should though!

Something funny I just found about Joe, this was part of an interview with Korg/Toneworks: (funny=underlined)

"Most tuners will get you in the ball-park, but this tuner is among the elite group of tuners right off the bat. The way that it's designed ergonomically, the way it sits, the way it lights up-all of those things determine its worth. Some tuners can be very problematic to use; I'm embarrassed to say I recorded all of Surfing With The Alien using a strobe tuner the wrong way!"

Only a man would do this......and it's absofreakinlutely hysterical.....go potty first....and if you don't, dont say I dint warn u!!

Pocket Taser Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife? This was submitted by a guy who purchased his lovely wife a "Pocket Taser" for their anniversary. (wonder if they're still married...)

Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 22nd anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Toni.

What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were suppose to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety.... WAY TOO COOL!

Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two triple-a batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arch of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs.

Awesome!!!

Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Toni what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.

Part 2 coming....

Part 2.....

Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-a batteries, right?!!!

There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target.

I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, taser in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.

All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4" in circumference; pretty cute really and loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-a batteries thinking to myself, "no possible way!"

What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best.....

I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as if to say, "don't do it man," reasoning that a one-second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad.. I decided to give myself a one-second burst just for the heck of it.

I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and

HOLY MOTHER, WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION@!@$$!%!@*!!!

I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs. The cat was standing over me making meowing sounds I had never heard before, licking my face, undoubtedly thinking to herself, "do it again, do it again!"

Note: If you ever feel compelled to "mug" yourself with a taser, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one-second burst when you zap yourself. You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three second burst would be considered conservative.

SON-OF-A-.. that hurt like hell!!! A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace.... How did they up get there??? My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching.

My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs.

I'm still looking for my testicles.... I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return.

Still in shock.

Hey Chad... glad to hear you're doing ok.. Gilbert Guitars used to be a good place to shop too back in the day, I've bought quite a bit off of them over the years, My Line 6 Spider amp, my Fender Blues Jr. which wasn't really a bad price $650.00 Canadian... it really is worth every penny for what I paid for it... and chances are I might end up buying something else from them one day but that doesn't mean that their prices are any good over all...

Music Pro I've bought stuff off of as well... my Yamaha GW10 guitar effect processor, a couple of guitar cases.. some guitar parts etc. etc. I've dealt with them so much they know me by name, Barrie the guitar builder... I used to jam once in awhile with the owner's sons at some point in between as well... They sell the Peavey JSX in both configs and I was considering trading both my Line 6 Spider and my Fender Blues Jr for the Peavey amp either in head and cab mode or combo.. I haven't decided on that yet...

anyways... another rough day at work... a sad reality of things to come...

might not be buying anything anytime soon...

peace

Guitarmiester - Okay, here you go. I made two lists, one for guitarists and one for bassists. I know tone isn't as big of a thing for bassists as it is with guitarists, but oh well.

First, I'll mention the two Satch songs that immediately come to mind: Love Thing and The Souls Of Distortion. Joe's tone at the end of the Love Thing solo kills me every time. And what I said after hearing a sound clip of the chorus of The Souls Of Distortion for the first time is still true...I can hear the emotion dripping from Joe's fingers.

Anyway, onto the "real" lists now, in no particular order...

Guitar:
- The Edge (U2): New Year's Day (from War, 1983) - I love the tone throughout the song, but the very end of the solo is especially cool...I know everyone knows the bit I'm talking about.
- Joe Perry, Brad Whitford (Aerosmith): Live! Bootleg, 1978 (the entire album) - I love this album's mix (it was recorded professionally but mixed to sound like a bootleg); the band was pretty into drugs by this time, but they could still hold it together enough when they played live...the interplay between Joe and Brad is awesome
- John Petrucci (Dream Theater): Hell's Kitchen (from Falling Into Infinity, 1997): I especially like the guitar part before the solo, where he only plays a few notes and uses the whammy bar a lot.
- Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin): Ten Years Gone (from Physical Graffiti, 1975) - this needs no explanation
- Eric Johnson: High Landrons (from Ah Via Musicom, 1990) - EJ's tone is always killer, but his tone on the ending solo here is one of my favorites...and it still sounds great live, too
- Alex Lifeson (Rush): Bravado (from Roll The Bones, 1991); Middletown Dreams (from Power Windows, 1985) - I could describe these, but it's easier to tell you all to just listen to them
- Andy Timmons: Super 70's, Pink Champagne Sparkle (from That Was Then, This Is Now, 2002) - I'd do a good job describing these if I could, but I can't...there's just something about the tone here that reaches out and grabs me

And I know it's kinda weird to include acoustic songs on a list about tone, but what the hey. Steve Howe's (Yes) Mood For A Day from 1972's Fragile and Jimmy Page's (Led Zeppelin) Bron-Yr-Aur from 1975's Physical Graffiti are just awesome.

This post is huge already, but I wanted to include a few bassists...so:

- Tony Levin (Liquid Tension Experiment): Osmosis (from Liquid Tension Experiment, 1998)
- Michael Anthony (Van Halen): Right Now (from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, 1991)
- Geezer Bulter (Black Sabbath): N.I.B. (from Black Sabbath, 1970)
- Tom Hamilton (Aerosmith): Monkey On My Back (from Pump, 1989); Sick As A Dog (from Rocks, 1976) although Tom wrote the song on rhythm guitar and played that on the album...Joe Perry and Steven Tyler played bass
- Chris Squire (Yes): Roundabout (from Fragile, 1972) or The Fish (from Yessongs, 1973)

...Austin...

Is there love in satchspace for a fan of guitar legends. Im searching on a new day for friends of the extremist, who attacks, slow and easy the engines of creation with a seven string devil's slide. am i the traveller going in circles on the journey singing a mountain song or am I sleepwalking on a starry night with a big bad moon up above and with only memories of seville 92 in my head? I believe I'm just in a mind storm with the crush of love in one big rush on a crushing day. Ok the chords of my life are strange!?... maybe im not of this earth....maybe I'm cryin tears in the rain for all my searching of satch fans, if I could fly to you I would, then you could just look up with hands in the air and say there is the forgotten Satch fan...... Until we say goodbye that's what breaks a heart:(
