962 - In isolation on the guitar it does sound like a Gmaj7/D to my ears. But the thing is that any one of the voices in that chord could be the tonic, and as such it could have many different names. Likewise, if you were playing with a bassist and he/she played each one of the different voices in the chord as the root note, it would take on a totally different character each time. What I'm trying to say is, basically - we're both right!!!! lol :-D

I just used a regular peice of printer paper and regular pencil. I think it turned out pretty good. Im thinking of maybe doing another one. Take care.

962 if the tonality is based around the fifth (cos it's an inversion) it's not going to sound like a "standard" maj7... if the bass player is playing a d under that chord then i stand by my interpretation of D add 6 add 11... for me the tonality is determined by the root
satriella none of the above - it's roughly my sister's age! :-)

absolutely (unless you're listening to the quo lmao) but for me what the bass player plays (ignoring moog pads even lower, in which case the moog does it) establishes the tonal flavour... i treat chords as an extension to pitch axis - the lowest note states the tonal centre... not sure if that makes sense, but i do know what i mean, honest! lol for example an a minor 7 with a low note (whoever plays it) of a establishes a minor quite easily, but if the lowest note changes to an f then the a minor tonality (again, for me) is gone - we're now talking f major 9 / f lydian territory...

HOLY S***!!!! I just found out that Dream Theater is not only playing in NY (which I've already gotten tickets for) but they are ALSO playing in Asbury Park 3/26!!! HOLY S***!!! That'll be two amazing nights of Dream Theater for me now! Two DT shows in barely even a month, totally unbelievable! I haven't even checked out how much tickets are, but they can't be the same price as my NY tickets cost... As if one night of Dream Theater (and it being filmed for DVD and CD and having seats 3 rows back from the stage wasn't enough) I'll be seeing them twice!!!
MarimariSRV The dates for the DT show in Asbury Park were just posted up today, I think, they added that show in A.P. for 3/26! I'm most likely gonna go to that too!
Satriella SFAM is such a great album... I really haven't listened to as much DT lately as I used to. I've been getting really into my own stuff lately (should be recording some stuff soon, I hope). Also, I've been listening to this one band a real lot lately, Pain of Salvation...amazing band. I ordered their live DVD 'Be' two weeks ago and it still didn't come! I've been pretty mad about that lately. I even ordered another DVD that same day (both from the same place), the one was shipped out the day after the other and the one came the next day, still didn't get the other though?! And the one was shipped out a day after the Pain of Salvation DVD! I knew I should have just overnighted both of them! Oh man...I just can't get over that DT is playing in Asbury Park now...what an amazing next few months this will be for me!
-EDIT: I just looked at the prices for the tickets for the DT show in Asbury Park...I guess one is more than enough to be happy with, especially since it's being filmed for DVD & CD and my amazing seats. $40-$65 for the show in Asbury. I already spent almost $200 (that's 2 tickets, orchestra seats, row 3.) for the show in NY. So, I guess I the NY show will be more than enough for now. I can't be overspending, I'll be going to NY in a couple of weeks with some friends, so who knows how much $ I'll end up spending then.

Phryg Dom - Yes, of course - you're right. I just thought you were saying that whatever the bass player is playing is the root of the chord. For exmple, with Gmaj7/D the D is not the root note - G is. D is simply the bass note. But then I'm sure you knew that...

Hello Joe!
I've been a fan since I first heard Satch Boogie back in '88. I really became a diehard fan after listening to the Not Of This Earth CD (vinyl actually). Great stuff! It's good to know you are still making one kickass CD after another. I can't wait for the next release!
