OCPS470, oh of course man, don't get me wrong, I think Dave LaRue's a fabulous bass player! I love hearing his mark stamped all over Steve Morse's stuff......it'll just be interesting to see how tight he's stretched, playing for both dudes!
ovation1, hahaha, oh man I'm crackin up.....I can just see Joe rolling up to some rickety old ranch on a Harley, you know the sort of place, out in the middle of nowhere some wood-and-tin shack type structure going on in the middle of an area which used to be fenced off. And there's Pat Badger chasing 200 Ostriches round a field :-p hehehe
climber, try not to think of modes as being written for a purpose. They just "are". A major scale has 7 different notes in it.....if you play a 1-octave scale you play 8 notes with the last one being the same as the first one. You can start that scale on any one of the 7 notes, so Position 1 (Ionian) starts from the root note, Position 2 (Dorian) starts from the 2nd and so on. In this context it means that all 7 modes are just components of the same scale.
ie. if you play a B Dorian over an A Major chord your scale will still sound like an A Major scale, and the same if you play C# Phrygian over an A Major chord.
However, each of these modes has a unique sound and structure in it's own right. So if you keep your C# Phrygian and change your chord to a C Minor you've suddenly got a completely different sound.
Sorry, that's about the best explanation I can come up with in a hurry....I usually spend weeks teaching people this stuff! haha. Hope it helps anyway :-]
Satriella, awww, thanks for the "PUBLIC NOTICE", that was really sweet! Also thanks for the feedback on my soundclick stats....I've never really thought about it, but 52 out of tens of thousands is pretty good I guess! :-D
Hugs

I saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show tonight...if anyone hasn't done the midnight showing thing with this movie, you need to.
The thing here was with a staff that acted out the movie onstage with the movie playing behind them. Of course everyone in the audience was dressed up, we all had rice to throw, we were sprayed with water, and all that good stuff.
I haven't had this much fun in a LONG time...

Howdy everyone. How's it going?
Way to go Liverpool, beating United 1-0!!!! I thik it's a bit of a joke the way their goal scorer celebrated though, in spite of rcet happenings. You cna bet nothing will be done about it by the FA.
Can't wait 'til Tuesday, when Real Madrid give Arsenal a right good spanking!!!!! Good game good game, as the legndary Brucey Forsythe would say.
Climber - If you give me your e-mail address I can sen you a copy of a column I wrote for a guitar website a while back. It axplains how the mods of the major scale work (or at least it tries to). Most of my students hav found it really helpful...

Hey guys, have a look at this
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4508158.stm
Personally I am annoyed that Music Company just using their "big wallets" and Harvard lawyers to limit peoples ability to learn and appreciate music. And obviously the whole point is to make more money. I mean most people listen to music and try to figure out how it was made and the tablature on internet is someone's interpretation of an artist's music. So copyright doesn't really play into it , because it is a "person’s interpretation " . I could understand the whole debate on downloading music on internet, but this is a step too far. If u bring the whole copyright rule in it, you are just undermining people's right of 'freedom of expression'. It’s wrong. Plain and simple.
what do u guys think?

Hi Joe
I just wanted you to know that you have been such an inspiration for my 16 year old son. He listens to you faithfully and has been bringing your music to guitar lessons, in an attempt to learn some of your music. He talks about you constantly. It's very nice to see that you have such an influence on teenagers today. You have an amazing talent, and I hope that he continues to follow in your footsteps.
He has no idea, but I just ordered the Premium tickets for the April 12th Toronto show. He is going to die!!!
thanks
Josie

Satriella: No problem on the credit maam', you deserve it! :-) Like guitar (or any other instrument), drawing is an art, and something that comes from within.... I used to draw alot when I was a child and was told I was very good, but I never kept up at it.... Having just a pencil and a piece of paper and turning it into a beautiful drawing takes talent, just like guitar, lol, keep it up!! :-)
962: haha, lol man, I can picute that!!!!.... Then Joe asks Pat if he can play bass for him, and Pat thinks real hard.... Joe then says: How bout' I get IBY to make you an ostrich bass, and the rest is history, lmao!!!!....
....Later peeps....
I guess the weekend doesnt count for the "podcast a day" thingie.... lol, I dislike the suspense!!

ovation1 - maybe you could pick up that pencil again now then...go on give it a go....you don't need anything special...I just pick up the first pencil I find! lol
962 - that's OK honey, any time...Just the truth...the truth is not always good...but I think it was OK in this instance hehe
Do The Stu - Wow the Rocky Horror picture show..I went to see that live @~#@+! years ago....dressed in my suspenders and black bin liner...with a white face...and oh like you said dressed up...hey do they still throw bounty bars at you when he does his speech and says paradise...oh and what about the kitkats when he says break....oh yes...I remember it was soooo much fun....I still love the soundtrack!
Dammit Janet....tut a tut a touch me...wild and an untamed thing...sweet transvestite...and of course the dancing....all get up now...do the motions...do the time Warp!!!....I don't think anyone can beat Tim Curry as Frank n furter though....and I just love Richard O Brien...talking of him...they used to do a thing called the alternative Miss World which was for transvestites basically and Richard O'Brien came on as the entertainment one time...he looked fantastic...in a pink toutou, high heels and fishnets with a long white wig...he should have actually won the contest...the Real Miss World I mean hehe he looked stunning with legs to die for!

Austin....I've been to one of those Rocky Horror midnight shows where the crowd and the employees actively participate...lots of fun. Unfortunately, for about a month after, I kept having these terrible dreams where Tim Curry is hiding in my closet dressed in drag waiting for me to fall asleep...lol ! I'll never look at him the same way again...lol.

Stevee T Thanks for all the help, I've been to NY once or twice already, and the last time I was there I ate at that Jekyll & Hyde restaraunt.
Ovation1 I was looking at a few videos on youtube (or something close to that) and I was watching some Racer X videos...you ever see the one of him playing Scarified (the one where they are all in space suits?) I also had time to check out the '88 video of him and Bruce playing Scarified. Awesome stuff, I have to check out more when I can. Yea, playing the counterpoint melody might give me some problems, I'll be used to shredding and then I'll have to slow down for the counterpoint!
marimariSRV My brother has been using his Apple a lot lately to find rare videos and songs by bands and artists...he found some pretty cool stuff for me, I'm pretty sure he said it was Vai playing Beethoven's 5th and Somewhere Over the Rainbow (i'll send both to you so you don't have to look). Hearing them made me have to figure them both out. Surprisingly, they didn't take that long. Other stuff he found: Ibanez 90th Anniv. show (Timmons, Gilbert, & Vai), and another older show, I don't remember what show, but it has a ton of great guitarist jamming together (Satch, Vai, Timmons, Gilbert, and 2 or 3 others that I don't remember.)
Satriella Check out what I said to marimariSRV... if you would like to hear Beethoven's 5th & Somewhere over the Rainbow, leave me your email address and I'm email them to you so you don't have to search for them.

guitarmeister - I did have a look... but I couldn't find a bit in ovation1's post where they actually were playing anything....anyway my email is sandyjw95@hotmail.com...thanks for the help
mthead101 - I ALWAYS beat myself up over everything...I'm like that...everything is always my fault...so I am always apologizing...which is annoying for some people..understandable....but I guess it's ingrained...sorry...see there I go again hehe...hmm maybe I should try aliens then...actually I tried to draw Joe with no hair...that turned out more like an alien...hopefully that picture is on a rubbish tip somewhere! But thank you very much for the compliment...I have put a new one on..Elijah Woods...I am doing Samuel L Jackson at the moment...I will post the link again when I put him on so you can see.....how is your project going anyway?
Supadave - Sweet Dreams...hehe...I don't look at him the same way either!

To All... Joe Satirani, Steve Vai, Jimi Hendricks and others... have proven my point...heres something not mentioned ( bout Jimi ) Jimi's music ..simply put, transended race (as his major fan base was white)and overcame prejudice thru his music but, had to go to Europe to be appreciated.. I.E. different country, different race ( also keep in mind the time period) so when he came back to the U.S. he was revered as the first 'Guitar God' even though racial relations at the time were poor to say the least - Rock the Heavens Jimi !!- and after just watching the G3 live in Tokyo ( incredible BTW ) i noticed the parallels .. to see all these people in a foreign country ..totally lovin the concert ( performed by foreigners)..again proving that the Arts transend all !!!! Thanx Joe and the rest of the wonderful people who made it happen.. one of the best things - only thing- i bought myself for my birthday!!!!! MT

962: I prefer to think of modes as colors.......if I have a minor chord, say cmin for example that I'm soloing over, I can play c dorian, c phrygian and c aolian. Dorian always sounds dark jazzy bluesy, Aolian sounds plain old dark minor, and phrygian sounds somewhat crossed between eastern and major tonalities. If I've got a major chord say cmajor I can play C Ionian, C lydian, and C mixolydian (although I usually reserve it for a C7 groove). Ionian is just the plain old major scale color, lydian gives a happy spacy ET type vibe, and mixolydian produces a happy jazzy bluesy sound. I rarely use locrian, except in cases where an out of key diminished chord is used for a bar. Any way, I think of modes as colors. Also, on top of that, you can play cmaj or cmin pent scale over a cmaj chord (or a C7) and you can play cmin pent scale over the cmin chord. You can also play a Cdiminished scale over a cmin, cm7, cmaj, c7, c6, cmin6, cdim, cwhole dim, and c half dim. That adds a whole extra soloing quality....oh I forgot to mention, you can throw in C harmonic minor over the cmin chord.......tons of options, tons of colors...lots of fun haah!

hmmmmm OCPS470 Interesting...some people see maths that way too...there was a bloke on the TV a while back...he is like the rain man...can't remember what they call them..they had a special name...ummmm...no....anyway there are only about 50 of them in the world...but he recited pi for three hours exactly while someone checked off the numbers on the list...but he said it was like a landscape in his head and he just looked along the landscape...colours shapes etc...they tried to trick him later by reading out pi to him and hooked him up to some machine...anyway afterwards his monitor showed where they had quoted a wrong number..by whatever a blip or something...i think it was a bit like a lie detector...anyway he said..he could see that the landscape was wrong cos there would be a big hole or a tree or colour wrong...it was a very interesting programme.
