962: I think mental reference points about what colors or vibes different modes elicit is very important. I have several students working on learning scales and soloing (improv) and it's interesting to me that my students will learn what modes they can use, with out putting much thought into the musical "colors" side of things. I'll have to coach them through it saying "what mood do you want to create....what feeling does this chord pattern give you...do you want to sound jazzy, or dark/heavy, spacy etc etc." And then, after you do that you have to coach them on stylistc taste. For example....I'm working on a funk riff that is built off of a Bb min pent scale, and implies a Bbmin chord. Because it's bluesy and funky, Bb Aolian sounds a little to sterile and straight ahead minor, Bb phrygian is stylistically to eastern and wierd over the riff etc. That's an important thing too, I think. Once you have your list of scales( and modes) that are theoretically usuable over a riff, you have to weed out the stylistically inappropriate options, then utilze the remaining options to create various vibes that fit.

OCPS470, precisely, and this allows you to keep the ones that are stylistically mor awkward in reserve, you you could throw in a short phrase of Bb Aeolian or Phrygian to add a certain vibe or tension, but use mainly Dorian, Pentatonic and Blues structures so it doesn't sound too contrived.
This is something that, I find, is very aparrent in Joe's style and Andy Timmons' style, and is sorely lacking in a lot of other players.
alter_ego_of_joe, just don't play for a day or so.....the nasty bits will die and dry up and actually come off (eeewwww gross!) and then get replaced with fresh fingertips!
Sorry, I can't help with any classical suggestions 'cause I don't know much about classical guitar that isn't flamenco!

Any chance of a UK tour that isn't G3??? A short set is just not enough ... please do a solo UK tour ... especially if the support is Eric Johnson ...
:-)
Thanks ...

One sketch had Ozzy grappling with the burglar when they broke in to his house. Ozzys screamin at him "At least take one of the dogs. Im sick of em shittin all over the place,"......

Hi all,
Been really busy lately. Wot a great wk end Ive had. Caught up with loads of people I ajnt seen in ages. My mates Lab4 had a good night at the Fridge/Brixton. Havent seen Adam and Lez since last summer as theyve been tourin all over the world. Had to leave to go work at Hidden/Vauxhall. Loads of old friends work there that used to work at Camden Palace (now Koko's) work at hidden.
Saturday night at Raindance SE1/London Brdge. My mates had the PA in there and I was setting up a PA in there. When I was packing up I sprained my right hand loadin one of the wedges back in the van. My feet are sore, my hand aches and my head hurts !! Party didnt finnish untill 1 oclock Sunday afternoon !
I crahed out and didnt move till 7 this mornin. My heads a bit delicate at the moment though. Thats what happens after a 16 hour party !! So much fun hee hee........
