Chris Peters - Hey, the other guitar player in my band is using the XXX. We are having some issues with the clean channel. It tends to break up easily and sounds really brittle. He used to play through a Fender Hot Rod Deville so he id used to a nice clean tone. I know you've played with the JSX settings a lot any suggestions?

Goodbye Syd
Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun. Shine on you crazy diamond. Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky. Shine on you crazy diamond. You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom, blown on the steel breeze. Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine! You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon. Shine on you crazy diamond. Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light. Shine on you crazy diamond. Well you wore out your welcome with random precision, rode on the steel breeze. Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Bike

I've got a bike You can ride it if you like It's got a basket A bell that rings And things to make it look good I'd give it to you if I could But I borrowed it

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world I'll give you anything Everything if you want things

I've got a cloak It's a bit of a joke There's a tear up the front It's red and black I've had it for months If you think it could look good Then I guess it should

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world I'll give you anything Everything if you want things

I know a mouse And he hasn't got a house I don't know why I call him Gerald He's getting rather old But he's a good mouse

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world I'll give you anything Everything if you want things

I've got a clan of gingerbread men Here a man There a man Lots of gingerbread men Take a couple if you wish They're on the dish

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world I'll give you anything Everything if you want things

I know a room full of musical tunes Some rhyme Some ching Most of them are clockwork Let's go into the other room and make them work

civgeek: well....I guess my first question is: Has the clean channel always acted this way or is this a new occurance? If the channel has started to break up, I would think the preamp tubes are suspect. In other words, if the drive channels sound the same but the clean has changed, that's preamp tubes all the way. Usually some of the tubes get used for the drive channles, and some of the preamp tubes are used in the clean circuit, so one of them may be bad. Also, you could look into better tubes. My JSX came loaded with Electroharmonix tubes....which are better than the junk most manufacturers stock their amps with, but in all of my amps, the JJ tubes make a HUGE difference.... the amp is simultaneously warmer, cleaner(noise wise), more defined, more headroom and the EQ controls have a wider range. Since the XXX comes stock with 6L6 tubes, I would recommend swapping them with a quartet of JJ 6L6GC power tubes, and swap the preamp tubes with JJ ECC83S tubes, with the phase inverter tube a JJ ECC83S that is graded for the phase inverter slot. You can go to www.eurotubes.com (JJ tubes dealer) to check out the tubes and inquire about the specific XXX issue. In other words, you can email them and say"I'd like more headroom and more warmth from the clean channel...what tubes will help this?" The other thing to think of, is that if your friend is using really high output passive pickups like the X2N or really hot active pickups like EMG 81's 88's etc, this will really push the front end of the amp and cause breakup. The JSX has an additional lo gain input to fix this problem. The other thing is that the tube may be bad, and the bias on the amp may be too low. For example, I was curious, soI called peavey and asked what the power tubes are biased at. They said that with EL34's the amp is biased at 42.5mV. For the JSX, this is a great setting and sounds perfect. You can set it a few mV higher, and the amp gets maybe a little bit warmer, but you start to run the risk of really short tube life. If the amp is set to "cold" around 40mV or lower, the amp will start sounding brittle or lifeless. The final idea...is that your friend is running the chanel volume on the XXX way up and the master volume low. If I do this on the JSX (for ex: set the channel on 10 and the master on 2 or something) the clean channel will be overloaded and distorted, and since the master is low, the amp will be cold sounding. I prefer to set the master on 10 and set the channels acordingly. I feel that the channels especially the dist channels are the best at a volume of 5 with the master on 10....this is tons of volume. So I set lead channel at 5, dist rhythm at 3.5 and clean at 3. This is more than enough volume, and makes the clean channel warm and doesn't break up. I have to tell you though, that I never liked the XXX clean channel, because I found it cold and stiff. Let me know if this clears anything up.
