Can you tell me in detail how you make the high pitched harmonic? tone when you hold down the whammy bar with your left hand ?

I have searched the internet far and wide and purchased a few Play Like Satriani DVD's looking for instructions on how to make this cool tone.

The closest I can come is scraping the wound strings with my fingernails or an artificial harmonic near the bridge while ffretting the 24th fret. Am I on the right track?

Thanks, man - Rock On!

Bill

the way you do it works, but the way JOE does it is different... you have to "pinch" the note, that is, pluck the string with the pick and at the same time use the fleshy part of your RH thumb to barely touch the string... start hitting the note with your thumb at the 24th fret and then work your way up to the bridge, you'll get a whole bunch of different harmonics per string... after you get that down, just wank that bar back and forth...

an extra tip, humbuckers do the trick... some work better than others, JOE's pickups might be the best in the market regarding this thing... i haven't updated mine, but my stock bridge pickup seems to do this better than the neck one... hope this helps...

now i have a question to all of you guys:

i'm farely new when it comes to floating bridges... i substituted those long screws at the back of the bridge for even longer ones to see if this would help me to angle the bridge in a way i could make it bend a note up to a perfect fifth... it worked, but for some reason, the first two strings don't react the same way and i can't get them to go farther than a minor third... i thought maybe i didn't set them at the same height, but i did and now i'm confused cuz i don't know what to do...
i can't go back to the way it was cuz i replaced those screws at first because the old ones ripped some wood off and i couldn't get them to hold the bridge anymore, so i had to use longer ones to drill into the wood a little deeper... now, am i "screwed"? can i do something to fix this?

Actually I think the way Joe does his squeals is he depresses the bar first with his left hand (it makes it easier to squeal open strings when they're slacked) then he squeals an open string with an artifcial harmonic. You can't pull the bar very far up from its home position, but if you depress the bar first, you can make the squealed note rise even higher then you normally could from just pulling the bar up.

Dear Joe.

attached a link to an image of my satriani stage design

I am a sydney based architect/designer and have recently done a series of cool temporary structures for international fashion/etc events, that the press described as not of this earth. I always loved you and believe this could be really interesting for you. They are made out of stretched fabric, using latest computer technologies and fabrication methods. They pack in a small bag and weigh around 30 kg all up.

the material interacts beautifully with light/projection, which is a big part of your and steves (G3) show. I am coming to your show in Sydney on the 1st december and would love to present these concept to you in person, if you have a minute. Best regards Chris
