Faisal3dfx- Ghost notes I believe are implied notes not really meant to be played, or played very subtley. Where the note appears leave space in the rhythm for it but kind of glance over it. Does that make sense?

Spent all day yesterday in the land of Hungarian minors (thanks Joe see what you do to me). For anyone who's interested they look like this in E: E Hung. min E-F#-G-A#-B-C-D#. Simillar to E harmonic min (E-F#-G-A-B-C-D#) but notice the raised 4th (A to A#). Harmonizing this key is a bit of a challenge and the chords sound a little strange. With some work you get used to the shapes though. One of my favorite modes of this scale is called the "double harmonic" rooted on the 5th tone. In this case B. Spelled B-C-D#-E-F#-G-A#. Notice all the 1/2 steps (B-C, D#-E, F#-G, A#-B etc.). This makes for some fun and somewhat easy trills. You can really start flying up and down the neck using trills once you've figured out the location of each pair of notes. Another cool mode is the "oriental" rooted on the 2nd tone. Here the F#. Spelled F#-G-A#-B-C-D#-E. A typical II-V-I triad progression would look like this: II (F#-A#-C), V (B-D#-F#), I (E-G-B). Easily "colorized" with the use of some upper extensions (7th's, 9th's, 11th's, and 13th's). For example (these are three of literally thousands) II7b5 (F#-A#-C-E) Vdelta (B-D#-F#-A#) Imin delta (E-G-B-D#). Give these scales and chords a whirl for that Musterion sound. I found them to be a refreshing alternative to the "western" sound we're so used to.

OK, so while everyone is waxing nostalgic I'll poot forth my 2˘. First Satch I ever heard was Surfing With The Alien, I think the first week it was released. I went in to the record store (that's right, I said record, as in vinyl) and they had this huge Satch display up, about a million posters of Surfing all layered over each other and making it three dimensional. Took up half of one wall. I thought to myself "wow this must be pretty awful if they're pushing it this hard" (I know, sounds stoopid), so I say to the record store guy "Hey, whatsit sound like anywaze?" And he put it on for me. After about 20 seconds I said "wrap it up, I'll take it!". I bought the casette version and then proceeded to wear that tape right out. Most amazing guitar I'd ever heard in my life. Eddie Van Halen & Yngwie both went to the back burner in a blink. I knew this was the "next" thing.

When I met my Wife later she had a casette copy of Dreaming No.11 and we killed that tape too. Then I found Not Of This Earth (still one of my favorites) and played that tape to death also. Then Flying In A Blue Dream came out (my Wife's no-contest favorite Joe to date) and the Dreaming In A Blue World tour came through Ottawa, my Wife & I saw Joe (& Stu!) at the Congress Centre here, tiny very up-close and personal venue... mucho sweet-o.

So, to make a short story long, first time I saw Joe live was in 89/90 & I've been a fan for almost exactly 20 years. Seen G3 3 times (I'm a HUGE Vai fan too, off-shoot of a decade long exclusively Zappa addiction (PRIMUS snapped me outta that binge)) and now I'm the World's biggest Buckethead fan. Still I'm always going "back to the Joe" all the time. Today for example while doing the dishes, I was marveling at what an absolutely awesome album Super Colossal is... damn!

My Wife is always saying that Blue Dream is the best of the best of Joe, but I'm VERY hard pressed to pick just one. I like EoC just as much as Love In Space just as much as LFG just as much as... etc...... Time Machine disc one is a personal favorite too.

So, now I'm a city bus driver for a living. I have to do a Saturday night shift every week and invariably I end up with Driving At Night looping in my head for hours at a time, I'll come home and just put on that song on repeat while catching up on emails and whatnot.

Also, one of my warmest memories to date is of coming home from one of my Wife's first ultrasounds of our first child, daughter Anne, it was a PERFECT summer day, we had the sun-roof open and were flying down the highway with Summer Song cranked, both of us smiling from ear-to-ear, still with the image of our daughter's perfect little black-and-white heart beating on-screen. *sniffle*

So, to conclude, thank you Joe, for years and years and years and years of amazing music.

smooches,
» Phył . . .

Heeeeyyy Joe!...

I was wondering, do you still have the track list for the original playlist that you put up for iTunes perchance? It had Deftones "Minerva", The Darkness "I Believe...", and a few other tracks. Wasn't it called "Joe's Check Your Head Mix" ? The reason I ask is because I can't find it posted anywhere on iTunes anymore! They have the "Extreme Party Shuffle Experience", but I searched through all the rest of the celeb pl's and couldn't find the "Check..." mix.

If you get a chance to post the tracklisting, I'd be most appreciative (you have good taste! I love the "Extreme Party" mix!)!

Wishing you a Happy Easter!!!

Ryan

P.S. (Excited about the new Deftones record comin' out?! I hope they actually play in Sacramento this time around! Funny how their hometown is the one they seem to play in the least!)

irnbru...that's quite the brutal knife edge ya got there. have to keep in mind that all artists change with the times :) I think joe is just having fun now a days. Digital recording of course also takes it's toll and honsetly i think some of what joe used to be has been lost to it ~ but none the less his new records always inspired me in some way. Try to take it for what it is instead of comparing it to his older works. Just a thought ~

ps: I'll always be of the opinion that nothing will top Crystal Planet :) but that doesn't mean everything else he does sucks lol I dig it all...

oh ya one last thought:

Trundrumbalind ~ I've probably heard this song millions upon millions of times and it still drops my jaw the same way it did the first time...

to create something to beautifully flawless...to construct such a melody...that will always be my life's dream right there.

to the drawing board!

JOE at the "I just wanna rock podcast" do you use the Millennia STT-1 in order to compress your sound?
It's amazing the BASS-TREMPLE balance at your sound. What effects do you have in mind to use at the live performance of that song in order to achieve that fatty-groovy sound?

Was listening to Dream Theater's "Repentance" from Systematic chaos, read on the case and Joe was in it as a guest "voice", along with Steve Vai! Didn't notice that at all..... just sounded like a load of random people. (btw the middle section has voices of people's regrets, that's what Joe was in.)

Check out the song here

Wizards Eye:

Yeah.....I was considering a Taylor also but they were out of my price range too. I wound up buying a good Washburn that was acoustic/electric....My Martin is not & I don't really need another really expensive guitar. I actually found a really good one right out of the box for about $250. My Martin is safe & sound with my mother in Tennessee. When I can afford a Killer mic, I will be bringing it down to Fla...

Slans:....I agree, There is some limit to what I would pay for a rare guitar but the old saying is "It's only worth what you can get for it."....A guy at Sam Ash said I could probably get $5,000 for my autographed Universe simply because of the # of well known player signatures I have on it.....& considering that there were not a whole lot of Universe's made. I will never sell it because of the reliability of it & the sentimental value it holds for me. Now if I was filthy rich, then I guess I would pay just about anything for what I want...right?.....

Clarky:

Thanks for the leg up bro. I am very proud of them whether anybody likes them or not..Production to me is everything!. You are correct about the killin' thing. Doing the research in the ol' book really shed new light on things as well as just getting in there & doing it..Trial & error is the best way I think. I must have burned at least 100 cd's then playing it in my car, referencing between other recordings..Now that I have the control over production, I try not to let things just "slip by"....Those were wonderful & encouraging words you said....BTW...Those links you sent me really helped too..

Oh yeah.. I almost forgot, my 1 year old son's favorite tune to go to sleep to is Cool #9, I just put on the G3 DVD & press play, he shakes, rattles and rolls until it knocks him out faster than anything else. Works like a charm each and every time, he's asleep before the end of the first track, go figure my boy is "lulled" by rockin' guitar music. Thassa ma boy!

My daughter's favorite used to be Buckethead's Electric Tears, she's long grown out of that but can still spot the big B's playing on any CD, no matter what I'm playing I'll say "who's that playing guitar?" and 9 times out of 10 she'll get it right if it's Joe or Steve or Buckethead. She hasn't quite got Paul Gilbert nailed just yet... ;O)
Ya-Yo Gakk was her all-time favorite, as soon as the song starts she'll blurt out "That's Julian Vai!". Did I mention... she's FOUR?!

"Bye bye!"
