This is the story of how my dream gently died. I'm 45. I think I'm talented, but I guess not enough to make it in the music business. I do know that I love performing, whether it's playing music or in the other arts.
After graduating high school, I didn't play guitar for 12 hours a day; I joined the Air Force, then worked a succession of jobs in corporate America that continues to this day.
I often wonder where I'd be if I pursued my dream. Would I be regionally or even nationally known? More likely I'd be playing clubs around the city, but at least I'd be doing what I loved.
Don't get me wrong. I have a beautiful family who I adore, a reasonably good career, and I can afford most all the toys I want for the music room.
Ah, but the death of my dream, you ask? Five years ago, after goofing around for 25 years, I got serious about composing and performing. A year ago, I played a couple clubs for the first time, and had an okay turnout. My one gig this year, five people showed, and three of them were family!
Yeah, I played hard and gave them a good show, but still ... all the people I emailed, you know, the ones that used to keep asking me when my next gig was, none of them showed. None of the half-dozen newspaper music editors or their flunkies who I sent press kits to showed.
I used to give out my website, but why bother? Seriously, nobody cares! It's a funny catch-22: you either make it BIG or you disappear. Good thing I have a day job! :-)
I can't imagine how Joe began. I couldn't see someone of his talent ever being ignored or turned away. I guess the world really is for the young, or those who are no longer young but have already made their mark.
If that's you and you're facing your future, follow your heart. No one looks back at their life and wishes they spent more time at the office.
* * * * *
BTW, I saw Joe at one of the Guitar Center sessions. I didn't know what to expect -- what I found is that he's just an incredibly down-to-earth, genuinely nice guy.
Hey Joe, sorry for gripping your hand so hard when we shook hands! I was pretty excited. Even if you never check out my material, I'd still be honored if my business card was tossed into your recycle bin :-)

Thanks everyone to your help! Apparently the servers for the premium tickets were down last night, which made me think they were sold out. But luckily I got on today and was able to purchase one!
Booyah!
Thanks again for all your advice.

Chad, hope it gets there fast and in one piece, lol!!! If not, blame Canada mail, eh? :)
El Nicko, woo woo, way to go, you'll meet Joe himself!! Now good luck with your guitar and getting that sorted out, it'll be fine, and a night you won't forget!!
Chelle...soon as I saw "Crue" I thought of U....that rhymes nicely....u really must go. How's the birthday plans coming? I still don't have a list for u...been running down "bargains" on flights and hotels in fecking Ireland...geez....
Dave DC....touching story. If guitar playing makes u happy, u can still play and who knows what might happen. My son plays hours a day, loves it to pieces, is pretty decent at it...and he's also autistic so chances of him ever being able to actually perform like he'd love to are slim. But it doesn't stop him from loving to play....and collecting the "toys" fer pete's sake! Good luck with it! And yeppers, Joe is the best human bean out there!
Joe Satrini....why yes, Mckenna is actually skerred of me coming there, so I shall try my hardest not to traumatize him if at all possible. =/ OH, and what you said about the riff in Andalusia being on the Satch tapes....my son and I noticed that too, and Chris got to ask Joe about that very thing on Rockline last week....Joe gave a great answer...if you have time, u should go listen to the replay of that show! And on the AWM, AWY video, Joe has said before that the lady in it was a good friend of theirs...Stu Hamm on bass....Jeffy C on "percussion" as you said...
I booked a hotel tonight....downtown Dublin, I have no idea what I'm doing ffs....if I can bring myself to actually go, I leave on May 21st....and u may never hear from me again. Oh and slansh....I'm sure there are nice Irish lads there...but I only wanted my Joe, my heart can't imagine anyone else. But thanks for the thought.

loll...you mean that if I already bought the album on iTunes I can get Ghosts, or it's just an easy single-buy?
I just bought the single track. I wasn't forced to purchase the whole album (again!); if you have already purchased the album from iTunes, seems you can just buy the one extra track for 79p (99¢).

Cappy:I likes my greens i does, iz don’t like eating anything with a face on it
Zen:Many a soul on fire, this is the road t hell
J Satrini:Tunes are still there pal, prolly a myspace thing, it tends t screw up every now n then.On guitar, lol, hmm be careful what ya wish for, if I told ya I,m not allowed on stage t jam with anyone back home in the bars would ya still want t play like ya hear?¿.Only one guy, blues guitarist called Jim Wilkie, would invite me up, btw if yer ever at the Dundee blues festival, y can catch him there, he,ll tell y exactly what it was like n if yer lucky like me he,ll invite ya back for a jam n chill t his some 4000 blues n jazz record collection with a few whiskys of course, I learnt a lot over the years from Mr Wilkie, hes a wise old cat n a great friend, so if hes not completely riddled with arthritis n y get t hear him up North, buy him a couple o shots from me
Andalucia I,ve visited
Granada is a must, just visiting Alhambra is worth it & dont miss the bar Los Dos Cajones, the tapas are wicked infact the whole vibe of Granada is for me gypsy flamenco personified
Cordoba Joe played there last year at the guitar festival, beautiful place great t get lost in its lil white windy streets, see if y can make it there for the guitar festival
Nerja
2 touristy for me but ya still got t go t see the caves, they are feckin incredible!
I cant wait t go back, its like village life pace in the heart of a city, the people, music. food everythin is 5 star, also watch out for tourist flamenco clubs, theyre not bad, just that the REAL deal is another thing altogether. If ya visit peak tourist season which is August then it’s a nightmare..be warned! Everyone has hols in August here, its just 2 hot t work 40-46 deg is not uncommon especially down south, begin of June mid Sept is yer best bet imo, now ya got some info for er indoors lol good luck bro
Ibanez:I know what ya mean, it’s a character thing, clever music can get a lil overwhelming at times
Cheese:HA just wait till the Dubs get a hold of y

hi joe,
i can't wait till your enmore theater concert in sydney this july. its going to be a life changing experience. i'm not sure how good your memory is but remember when you were at sydney for the G3 tour in 2006 (december). you know how you came to sign at billy hyde music at camperdown, i'm the kid whos dad got you to sign the 'joe satriani - an anthology tab book'. remember - and it had the spelling mistake - 'joe satrini'. and you signed on the front page - 'to joel'
well it dosn't matter if you don't remember anyway because i am sure you meet a lot of people. anyways i hope i can see you personally at the concert. i also hope i win the backstage passes off this site. it would be amazingly awsome. your a real influence to me and the concert is going to be the best night of my life.
Joel.

mikesb - LOL, you're not wrong there! That happens for me with all the great players... I think maybe I'll go have a little rock out first, THEN check out his tunes
Cheese101 - ah, stuff it, go traumatise him... how bad could it be? Regardint the Andalusia question: NO WAY! I will go check that out later then, great minds and all that.
Thanks for the video answers. Stu doesn't quite look like Stu. Do you know who's strumming the acoustic?
Slanshroom - I'd still like to have your ability yep, I'd take that wish... I take it they're all scared to get on stage with ya?
Thanks for the great info on the holiday, cordoba sounds right up her street - mi'lady will be pleased
Joel_01 - that book is where I took my nick from... well, the Super Colossal Rehearsal video anyways.
