Klausi: I feel your pain. Michelle beat me to it but I'll echo what she said: if you are an inexperienced concert goer, please take some concert ear plugs with you (not the kind you wear for DIY ear protection - although they would be better than nothing). You can order them on-line. They are the kind of thing that drummers wear. You can get really expensive ones made to fit your ears but cheaper options are available. If you value your hearing they are worth having on you just in case you find the sound guy starts to get a bit fader happy! I speak from experience: my hearing is partially shot from attending too many loud shows. I now have tinitus particularly on my left side. The one time I remembered to take my plugs I somehow went and lost them before the show! Doh! That was the show that really finished my ears off too. :o(

However, earplugs or not, there is nothing more frustrating than having your favourite, world class musicians in front of you and not be able to hear them properly. Sadly, it happens all too often. I definitely felt that the guy on the sound desk was pushing the PA too hard at the show I attended. The thing with Joe's music is that it is so detailed and you want to catch it all. If the bass and kick drum are blowing out all over the place it smothers a lot of the other sounds because your ears can't cope with the imbalance. It's great that it's loud but it shouldn't be at the expense of the music.

From experience getting close to the stage at floor level tends to increase the bass problem. However, you were right near the sound desk and it was still a problem! I'd like to know if folks on the balconies found the sound was pretty well balanced? I may chose a seat there next time if the sound is better.

baudi67: first gig eh? I'm not laughing but I am smiling just a little. :o) However, you do make a valid point: a Satch show should serve up the music in as accessible way as possible. That means that a decent level of volume is essential but not overly so as to make it hard to figure out what's going on. I think Joe's sound crew got it pretty well spot on last tour (Super Colossal) but pushed the levels up more this time around. You should definitely have had some plugs on you though. Make sure you get some and try them out next time around.

Personally, I love a concert to be loud but that doesn't mean I like distorted sound from overcooked PA systems. I know great sound can be achieved. I saw Steely Dan last summer at the Bimingham NIA Academy. Awesome show and awesome sound; loud but clear as a bell. I would also sight Joe's Super Colossal gig at St. David's Hall Cardiff in 2006 as one of the best sounding shows I've ever heard.

After the show in Cardiff this year I turned to the guy next to me and asked how he had liked his first Joe gig? "Very loud" he replied! Nuff said.

Satriella: Glad you survived the shows. Next time around I'll try and do a couple of shows, if only to double the chance of bumping into you! :o)

Revan: I, too, saw Extreme many years ago on their Pornograffiti tour (they actually played my hometown!). Sound was crap though. The album has some very cool playing by Nuno but now I actually prefer Three Sides To Every Story. Have you heard that? (I think Tragic Comic was the single released). Nuno was on stage with Joe at the Spanish Guitar Legends do some years ago and I think I saw a vid on YouTube with Nuno and Joe playing together.

First of all keep rockin! You are the best! But anyway my guitar has a floyd rose and it gives me a ton of trouble. I go through a pack of strings a week and whenever I tune my guitar to a different setting it moves causing all my strings to go out of tune and when I tune it again it just keeps on moving and eventually my strings snap or it just keeps on repeating over and over. Is this a problem for all guitars with a floyd rose? or is it wierd and I should trade it in? also me and my friend both play guitar and we wrote and recorded some songs (just two guitars) you can go to myspace.com/scordersen project and check it out. It would mean so much to me and my friend if you would. thank you very much! with great respect- David Scordato

one more thing to get off my chest. I believe that you are the perfenct example and idol of guitar players. Not only does your playing and licks sound cool. you structure all your solos and make everything actually make sense musically unlike a lot of other players out there. Not only those amazing attributes you really feel the music and put your soul into it! that's what music is really about! Not just moving your fingers fast but playing beautiful music with your heart. I just wanted to say how much of an Idol you are to me and an inspiration to all of my guitar playing and you inspire all aspects of my music. wheter it is my saxaphone, clarinet, piano, drums, bass, or guitar(my main instrument). You truly are the greatest. once again, with great respect and burning desire to be even half of what you are today- David Scordato P.S. sorry for all the seperate messages! I :)

Cheese--- Yes that is a very cool vid, He did that in the EWJ tour vith slight variations. It sounded like he was gonna bust out Rasberry Delta Jam for a minute there didn't it? That woulda been too raw.

Tuesdayschild---- you read music? That's cool, If your son plays too you will both find that book helpful. I never learned to read music. 16 1/2 years without it and I do alright. One benefit of never learning to read is I can pretty much play anything I hear the first time around. Well not anything let me rephrase that. Any solo I hear no matter how fast it may be. When I hear a blazing solo my ears turn the notes into like bullet-time from the matrix. I can pick it all up almost instantly.

The downside is that songs that have a lot of chords in them I dont do so well on 'cause I dont have an extensive chord vocabulary. Just your basic major, minor, maj&min 7, nothing extravagant.

So I could never play like Phil Keaggy songs and he's another one of my top ranking guitar heroes. For only having 9 fingers this guy is one of the sickest dudes to ever pick up a guitar.

This version of Salvation Army Band must be crazy to see live…

I'll echo what michelle and loll said. If you're bothered by the sound you need to wear earplugs. Even Satch says so:

http://www.hearnet.com/audio_video/video/satrianipsa.mov
http://www.hearnet.com/

Igneousiceman - I listened to a few Rush In Rio songs the other day and I agree with what you said about Alex Lifeson's tone. I still want to give it a full listen, as it's been a long time since I've done that, but wow...the sound quality is nothing like I remembered.
Wooleyman - Cool...thanks for the info about those Rush stickers. I generally don't collect stickers, but those sound awesome so maybe I'll pick 'em up.
hybes - EVH and Satch are so different when it comes to well, everything. ;-) I've never seen Joe give less than the best in a live setting. I saw him do two shows in San Francisco in December 2004 when was sick with what he would later find out was pnemonia. But he still gave 110%...in fact, at that second show he was more animated than he has been at most of his others that I've seen.

EVH, on the other hand, responds with attitude when he gets asked about his thoughts on participating in a G3 tour. I love his band and I think he's an excellent guitarist, but man...a little humility would do EVH a lot of good.

elisa94 - Stu Hamm didn't play on the Super Colossal tour, Dave LaRue did. This is Stu's first tour with Joe since G3 2001.
Tuesdayschild - What Dream Theater album did you buy? :-)
ZuperDave - Cool...I would've loved to see a band like Rush back in the 80s. Not only would I have been able to hear some songs that they just don't have room in the setlist to play today, but they had some cool opening bands back then. Eric Johnson and Porcupine Tree have both opened for them (although I think this may have been the early 90s)...I would have loved to be at either of those shows.
REVAN 2008 - I bought Extreme's Pornograffiti a while ago but still haven't listened to it. I need to change that...thanks for the reminder. ;-)
REVAN 2008 - Yes, Joe reads this board. I don't think there's much rhyme or reason to when or why he'll decide to post something, but he seems to post more when he isn't on tour.

...Austin...

I mean : not be simplist about psychologic aspects of life can be sometime required.. thx. We all know that ed is crap with words. & he's the first to recognize this lack.

Van Halen is diver down. Sad. But without him.. who know where was the guitar rock..

hola, yup listened to 3 sides matey, it got slammed but i thought it was a good album. have nt heard it for years, but it reminds me of super castlevania 4 on the snes, as they came out close ish. extreme 1st album is a bit dodgy mind.

listening to rust in peace, hangar 18 great tune. megadeth have some unusual compositions which are addictive, never use to be mad on them, but prefer them to metallica by far nowadays.

better photo blue moon, when you met joe did you freeze or keep ya cool?

i dunno what id be like, probably blub somthing like ' i invented the bananna' and nod emphatically.

Do the Stu - totally agree. It's a shame when a a guy with so much talent has so poor an attitude. I really have always appreciated Joe for doing the "little" things for his fans. All the little videos about guitar tips and the radio interviews..podcasts...you name it. In this day and age when you have to decide to split your money on the latest cd and gas...you want to atleast give your money to the guy that puts all on the line every night of the week for you. I just hope that I have the opportunity to see Joe live. It's a shame to be a fan for 20 years and have still not had the opportunity. Wish I could afford one of the trips over the Europe and catch a couple....sigh....goals.

Zenfish - There is no denying Eddie has had some tough times, but he's also just too full of himself. There is a new interview in Rolling Stone and he kind of snubs other bands. He said he doesn't listen to anyone except Cream. Not that he has to listen to any bands, he just comes off so crappy about it,

Achoooooooo - That video was hilarious! That poor old guy almost fell over tapping his pedals, and then he had to give the guitar a quick tune in mid song! CLASSIC!!

I am so curios how the Chickenfoot band is going to turn out.

Ahh...unfortunately I was to go and see Robin Trower tonight...but my dad has unfortunately had a case of the 'ol hurling bug. No Satriani, and no Trower. Damn...but at least we saw Bonamassa in Feb. Look on the bright side eh?

To reiterate what's going around about earlpugs, I wore them at the Bonamassa gig and they made everyhting bearable. All instruments right mix in my head, and no ringing! Word of warning to Matt--you may regret not wearing them in later life! There's a guy at my local music shop who can't distinguish between 's' and 'f'. Fun when trying to ask to try out gear...=D

DoTheStu It is intersting how much Lifeson's sound has changed over the years isn't it? When you compare it to how steady Joe's tone has been over the past years. I feel like breaking out the dvd now as well!

Nick: I take it PayPal is the only way to buy your stuff? Not in the shops yet?! Or should I just have your web page up constantly? =D

Very good vid you put up Cheese101! and very nice story Stingray625...just goes to show the power of music.

Hybes : If you listen to VH's music, you hear that his musical culture goes far beyond Cream.. maybe you ignore that he was pianist & drummer before playing guitar. & that his father is a jazz musician.. but well.. ed is simply human. Lot of people are full of themselves. But very few get his miraculous genius. This must be a very heavy burden.. that + success very young + alcohol + drugs... & you get a lost guy. A lost guy jaded with lot of money. Sad. EVH has played with the greatest guitar players in his time.. Holdsworth, Brian May, Lukather... now, he's jaded & G3 couldn't bring anything more to his experience.

About Cream, i think he's not wrong to defend this band against amnesia.. Cream is the base of lot of rock thing, & that before the Hendrix Experience, before Led Zeppelin, before Black Sabbath, before Deep Purple.. just after the Yardbirds.

On an other point, i don't see why everybody would have to agree with the G3 direction. I respect Joe. But G3 is an elitist stage for specialists. Nothing more. There's several others ways to defend guitar's place on the world.

I know that several people here think that Joe is the ultimate rock player.. but the EVH's musical revolution was here before him, & will always be here for ever. If you really search, you find that he has been more revolutionnary than Hendrix.

I'm happy to not have to bear that kind of burden. EVH must be very alone.

Final word... try to understand before judge.
