From Runners World . . .

Non-Runner Dies While Not Running

A Mississippi man died yesterday while not running in a local marathon.

Les Actiff, 43, of Jackson, Miss., collapsed while watching television in his Hattiesburg home. Attempts to revive him failed, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

He was still clutching a bucket of fried chicken.

Like 25% of the U.S. population, Actiff was obese. Federal statistics show that nearly a third of U.S. adults 20 years and older are obese; about two-thirds are overweight. Actiff had been a non-runner for more than 20 years, according to his family and friends.

Family members were stunned.

"I don't get it," said his wife, Bess. "He didn't run all his life. He was always so inactive. And now, this. You just never know, I guess."

"At least he died doing what he loved," she added. "Not running."

Spectators gathered outside Actiff's home were similarly shocked.

"I'll never not run," said one woman. "It's too dangerous."

A large man in a scooter, out walking his dog, was more fatalistic: "If you can avoid doing a single positive thing for your health your whole life, just sit around like a lump and eat poorly and then still drop dead... Well, I just don't know. I guess when it's your time, it's your time."

Actiff appears to have died from atherosclerotic heart disease, according to Lamar County Coroner Paul Caste.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, at the Pizza Hut off of I-59.

hybes - I assume you're talking about the aftershow pass drawing mentioned on the road page?

List yourself as attending the show (click the "edit show attendance" link at the top of the road page), and then three or four days before the show a name or two is randomly chosen from the list. Each winner receives a pair of aftershow (meet and greet) passes.

Both you and your wife can enter. There have been problems on past tours where people would sign up for multiple shows in their area, and then only buy tickets if they won aftershow passes. But if shows sell out, then those passes go to waste. So go ahead and add your names now, but if you end up not going, remember to take them off the list.

I wish you luck. It took me 13 contests to finally win, and I had a guest or two at about half of those shows (as it is, my dad is the one who won, not me...haha). But a million people always seem to add their names to the lists for the California shows, so maybe you'll have a better shot elsewhere in the US.

chojuaniche - I commented on your juggling video a while ago (see the bottom of the first post here). It's very cool...there are a lot of YouTube videos of people playing Joe's songs on guitar, but yours is one of the few that put his music to something else. :-)

...Austin...

...Hey ,you know scizophrenia realy is nothing !,but you have to be tough boy.You know my healthcare plan from the goverment will only cover 300 dollars a year to treat my schizophrenia they sent me a letter at the begining so I cut a deal with my family doctor ,for 20 dollar maximum limit for the bill per visit for the treatment of my schizophrenia .Just a regular MD not enough deneiro for a psychiatrist.,another way you have to be tuff is at your medication limit like the doctor,s are only allowed to prescribe so many prescriptions for mediation for schizophrenia within so many years and after that amount they have to stop .So that would mean no medicine!1 so I pulled some good connections got some paperwork so I take and have my medication for life! like forever but anyone else ,their on the 2 and a 1/2 year medicaine ,failure programe and the treatment costs I have been taking my mediaction now for 5 years almost exactly ,not alick of problems, and I will continue to do so,.Hey satch readears those are just some of the battles I encountered getting and haveing both treatment and medicine later wolf2.

fiboacci1618......Lake St. is also know as Ulysses S. Grant Memorial Hwy? Huh ? I've ben' in this area all my frickin' life and never even heard of that.....lol..... When the feck did that happen? ....lol....OMG....You learn something everyday.... I guess..... Yeah I know exactly where you lived. RT. 59 is just East of there. If you decide to go to Joe's Chicago show let me know. We'll meet you there.

Woolyman..... Yeah, Gregg Bissonette. Awesome drummer. Where is he now? Mikesb....Help !!!!!. I remember reading the interview with Joe in Guitar World or Guitar One back in the day. Joe was having a lot problems with this CD. Nothing was happening right at all. Joe said he was reduced to tears and eventually scraped the project. Than some how Joe hooked up with the Bissonette Bros. and it all came together into The Extremist CD. There's some great songs on there.....Friends, Summer Song (which was used by Chevy on TV), Tears In The Rain.... I love that song. I recorded a version of that when I first heard it. Not being Classically trained, it took 2 months of some hard work to get that one under my fingers. The Extremist,War. The CD is great as all are. Was that the last CD with Joe having hair?.....It don't matter,,,,,Hair or shaved ....The man can play guitar. Take Care

Hey Joe , Thanks for coming to Canada for a few shows , cant wait to see you and Stu together, this is gonna rock , just one site suggestion, under what instrument do you play , your only allowed to choose one item, many people like myself play more than one instrument, I'd like to choose guitar, bass, and keyboards since these are what i play on a regular basis, but since this is a string orientated site I'd stick with guitar/bass , so once again , thanks Joe , for teaching us and giving us inspiration to release our music from within in ways we didn't know. If i get anymore technical I'll be here forever, but I think you got the point. P.S. I hope you play Ten Words on tour , it's an emotional masterpiece, by the way, what are the ten words?

Heeeeeey Joe,

Have you heard of the band BLACK TIDE? I mentioned them on here before and first heard them about 7 months ago. They're a group of kids that have a kick ass band. The singer/lead guitarist Gabriel Garcia is ZZ's age!! They have an article in this months Guitar Player about them.

Two of the guys were asked "Who are some of the players that inspired you to get into music??

Garcia: My favorite guitar player is Joe Satriani. He's so musical that his songs don't even need vocals. His guitar is the voice. He can totally shred, but he chooses not to. He chooses to be musical, and I love that.

Then he goes on to mention Jason Becker and Marty Friedman.

Oh yeah, and there's this...Joe Satriani’s Bending Drill

:-)
