OK, here are my thoughts on Super Colossal...I'll go through the album song by song, in two posts with more comments at the end. This'll be long, but it's from me so I'm sure you're expecting that. ;-)

Super Colossal - As I've said earlier, this is among my least favorite Satch "singles". The solo (1:54-2:35) is nice, especially the last 10 seconds of it. The last 10 seconds of the song are cool too.

Just Like Lightnin' - I like the last few notes in the repeating rhythm phrase. I'm not sure what Joe's doing there...maybe playing ghost notes? It's cool, but it's buried. I do like the chorus (0:40-1:00), but the verse is so laid back that the song sounds incomplete. There are other cool moments (1:20-1:40, 2:10-2:35), but I think those should be the minimum level for the song...these cool things should make up the verse and chorus, they shouldn't be highlights later on.

It's So Good - I like the vibe here...my biggest complaint would be that the rhythm track behind the lead is too developed. When there are two or three guitars in the background the song has less of a "real" feel and more of an "overproduced" one, and I don't like that. There are some cool ideas in the solo (beginning at 1:40), but a decade ago Joe would have started here and turned it into something like Summer Song. But today it's the highlight of what I feel is a lesser track. To be fair, I do really like the simple rhythm track as the song fades out (the last 25 seconds or so of the track).

Redshift Riders - This is classic Satch to me...there's a crazy riff that's doubled on bass, and the song has a live feel. I love the whammy bar bit (1:24-1:34), but it's too short. I also like the solo at the end of the song (the last 32 seconds).

Ten Words - This is one of my favorite ballads from Joe. I like how the same phrases are repeated, played with a different style/touch each time. My favorite licks in the solo (1:42-1:53) may very well be my favorite on the record.

A Cool New Way - I really like the rhythm guitar here, especially how the notes fall all over themselves...but again, I almost think something this interesting should be the lead, with maybe a simple chord progression under it. There are some cool moments (1:53-2:06 and 2:20-2:48), but I realize that's only 30 seconds of "cool" in a six-minute song. The solo here is probably the best example of how I feel it sounds like Joe is playing over a backing track. I guess one way to look at that is to say it was mixed well, but I don't like the feeling it creates and I don't think it works for Satch.

One Robot's Dream - This one has really grown on me since its release. I think it finally clicked when I saw Paul Gilbert play it with Joe at the Cliff Show. There are a lot of cool little things in the lead (0:43-0:47). I like the chorus riff in this song, and I love some lines later on (2:04-2:40), but I feel that should be the verse riff. The outro solo (4:16 to the end) is nice...this song is probably my third favorite on the album.

The Meaning Of Love - I really like the repeating phrase in the intro (0:05-0:16), but once everything else kicks in it gets buried in the background. I'd like to see Joe expand on that phrase instead of do what he does with the lead. I like what I guess is the bridge (starting at 2:09) and the solo that comes in after that. But again, that's only a small part of the song.

Made Of Tears - My complaints here are similar to other songs. I love the rhythm track but not what is on top of it. One of my favorite moments on the record is in this song (1:40-1:52, especially 1:46-1:52). The solo (beginning at 2:22) is good, but again...there's a lot of down time between these parts.

Theme For A Strange World - Back when this album was released, MegaBoyd called this song War Part 2. I kinda agree, but I think the song does go deeper than that. I like what I guess is part of a verse (1:05-1:19), and another part later on (3:53-3:58). But as a whole here, the rest of the song is a bit too repetitive for me.

Movin' On - I like this vibe here. There are some good moments (0:52-1:25), but they're only good...not great. I like the pick-scratching (3:26 to the end).

A Love Eternal - This is a good ballad, but it doesn't make my list of favorites from Joe. I hear a bit of Love Thing in here, with how Joe says so much with just a few notes (0:33-0:38).

Crowd Chant - I disliked this song from the first time I saw the title. I guess it's fun, but I'm not really into it. My favorite part is the bit (1:04-1:30) I assume comes from the piece from the 1800s that Joe mentioned in the podcast. I would love to hear the Party At The Enterprise version of this, which was also mentioned in the podcast...I have a feeling I'd like it a lot more.

I know some of my comments here are hypocritical. I love EOC, and so much of that can never really properly be performed live. Also, You Saved My Life is one of my favorite songs...and there are layers upon layers of guitars there. Bells Of Lal Part II is another favorite, and that has a bit of the "backing track" feel. But hey... ;-)

Good Morning Satchland........So What Up?

Do The Stu...... My link to the Cold Play vid clearly says they removed the vid due to copywrite infringement. With that in mind I think there's something going on. I do agree Cold Play isn't ripping Joe off and it's a coincidence. Actually it shows to me what sense of melody both have. Great Minds Think A Like.........

michelle.....How are you sweetie? Well the first place you go blind is in your eyes...lol....When I saw and read the Black Tide interview I thought of you right away and was just passin' the info along. Anyway ,I like this band a lot. Their sound is great and if they play safe.....they'll have a great future in music. Hugs to ya......

Have A Great Day Everyone !!!!!

Hey Guys

Do the Stu: Yes it'd be good if you could find that vid of 'why' sometime and maybe post it somehow! Funny you say he played motorcycle driver on the ITLIS tour, I went to see that gig, he may have played that one, not sure, but he played 'War' which was nice to hear, seriously heavy and loud!!

My top Satch albums have got to be Crystal Planet, The Extremist and Engines of Creation. I get the impression that a lot of people aren't keen on EOC but, I reckon its awesome, a lot of thought has gone into it.

Igneousiceman: Hows things? School/college does keep things focused lol, although at the time I grant you it seems like hard work! On the subject of itunes...... I've decided to rerecord a lot of the stuff before I get it on itunes, with real drums etc and better production. So I reckon I'm gonna wait. But if you want, email me at nickbowley@gmail.com and I can send you a cd! How north is up north? We do a regular jazz/funk gig in Nottingham.

Woohoo, we have a Reno date! But man, I wasn't expecting to have to drive all the way to Reno from LA. I was hoping for a stop in Ventura or San Francisco along the way. Oh well, I'll see what I can do once the rest of the schedule comes in.

cheese101 - I know it's still early, but do you think you'd consider this Reno show? It's a new venue for him there, right? Doesn't he usually play the Hilton?

dream3 - I figure my opinion of Super Colossal is an unpopular one, but I think it'll lead to some good discussions here. ;-)

Thanks for the link to your Stu video clips...it's interesting that he played the Star-Spangled Banner in Australia. I know it's a great example of Stu's technique, but it seems funny because it's not a song that everyone down there would be familiar with (even though it is on his Outbound CD).

Keniko - Sorry, maybe I didn't do the best job of explaining myself earlier. I don't know if you've ever noticed them before, but those copyright infringement notices pop up on YouTube all the time. Record labels and other companies are always having clips pulled. They probably have someone on staff doing YouTube searches all day and flagging videos of artists who are under contract with them.

It is interesting when songs kind of match up like that, but I think the last few examples I've heard are really stretching things. A year or two ago I remember a big fuss over a Red Hot Chili Peppers song that sounded like Tom Petty's Last Dance With Mary Jane. But in the comparison (done on some radio show), they sped up LDWMJ.

chojuaniche - Here's the last mix CD of Joe's softer songs I made, for a friend. It was one of three CDs I made for her, and some softer songs were included on other discs...so this is missing some obvious choices (and it was done before PSATMOR was released, so it's missing Out Of The Sunrise). Here's what it was:

Turkey Man, New Day, Chords Of Life, Lights Of Heaven, Always With Me Always With You, Until We Say Goodbye (techno mix from Additional Creations), If I Could Fly, Cryin', Clouds Race Across The Sky, The Traveler, Secret Prayer, Slow And Easy, One Robot's Dream, You Saved My Life, Echo

For a list to answer your question I'd probably pull Chords Of Life, If I Could Fly, The Traveler, Secret Prayer, and One Robot's Dream and replace them with Banana Mango II, Baroque, Love Thing, Rubina, Ten Words, and Thinking Of You.

My first list would fit on an 80 minute CD. I didn't add up the time with these changes, but I bet it'd fit on one CD too.

To answer your question, Joe didn't do the song from Top Gun. Steve Stevens (Billy Idol's guitarist) did...it's called Top Gun Anthem, and it won a Grammy.

setnarod - More dates are being added. If you're looking for another Texas show, you might be out of luck though...
nickguitarmaestro - The clip might be on my old computer, actually. I'll look now though.

About Motorcycle Driver, I remember Joe changed the setlist a bit after he got sick...so maybe it wasn't there for your European show but was added for one of the US ones I saw.

AC/DC ARE BACK IN BLACK ICE:

Posted yesterday at: www.undercover.com.au/News-Story.aspx?id=5461

By Paul Cashmere / We will know next week what the title of the new AC/DC album will be but 'Black Ice' looks like a front-runner at the moment. AC/DC have three titles being considered for the album, another one being 'Runaway Train', Albert Music's Danny Keenan confirms for Undercover News.

Keenan says that we should know in the next week what the band would officially decide on. Albert Music CEO Tim Prescott will head to New York for meetings over the AC/DC release next week.

Danny Keenan says he has heard half the album but did not hear a song called 'Black Ice'. If it is being used as a title track then it may have been one of the later tracks recorded for the album. 'Black Ice/Runaway Train/insert third title here' will be the 15th studio album from AC/DC and their first since 'Stiff Upper Lip' in 1998.

The album was recorded in Canada at Bryan Adams studio with Brendan O'Brien. Sony BMG says the album will be released this year. Keenan suggests we may hear the album as soon as October.

ty for the messages on my tooth, lol....it's being a bugger, that's for sure. And by the time all is said and done, me thinks my teeth will be worth more than my car, lol! Sigh.....

hybes, yer welcome. So I guess that means you got some tickets for your show at least, that's good. Don't forget to register yourself for the aftershow drawing too....ya never know :)

Hey cuth. How's life?

Jamie, yer welcome, it was nothing, glad you got a picture signed by Stu and had such a good time. Your post about it gave me a smile, and that's pretty hard to do these days, so u did good, lol. I actually spoke to Stu, Jeff and Galen outside the Dublin venue, but they dint know me as cheese, lol....just a fan saying hi as they were on their way in, and then out again to wander the streets before the show. I'll be thinking of you enjoying your satch shows! And yer too skinny, u NEED to eat!

Oh, and how about sending me an Aussie credit card....in Mckenna's name ;)

Mckenna, it might be on the news but I'm not paying much attention...go figger....and yet you get it in Dublin? That's wierdy, lol...poor kid. :|

Austin....yyyyyyyyep, already added Chris and my names to the attendance for the Reno show, we'll definitely be there. It is a new venue for Joe, he lately has always played at the Hilton, now known as the Grand Sierra hotel, and it's a fantastic venue for sound quality, not a bad seat in the house. I have no idea what the Silver Legacy theater will be like, although I have stayed in the hotel and it's lovely, lol....has a fantastic Friday night seafood buffet, spendy, but omg the seafood there!! That is....if u like that naaaaaaaasty stuff :) Hmm, maybe that's why Joe wants to play there on a Friday night.....the crab legs and three thousand kinds of oysters, etc?

What say Joe?? Is the lure of the seafood buffet at the Silver Legacy calling to you and the guys??? If so, u can have mine too, I hate seafood, lol!!

More tour dates please, and webmaster...the chat is still broken!

hello, RIDE 4 SONG OF THE DAY!

id get on my bike but its a knackered moutain bike, not quite a kawasaki ninja or harley, still the feelings there.

ok the outro riff from ride is so underated and underused, it could be a foundation for a new satch song.have a fresh listen folks if the tunes rusty.

SUPER CLOSSAL,

DTS, i really like like this album, and the title track is a REVAN 10/10. i also like crowd chant, its just a fun tune. theme for a strange world i love, when i hear that i always picture those old LOST IN SPACE sets from the 50's or 60's. which is cool.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A set of North Carolina babies surprised their parents by tipping the scales and being among the biggest twins on record: Sean William Maynard and Abigail Rose Maynard weighed in at a combined 23 pounds and 1 ounce at birth this week, a North Carolina hospital announced Friday.

Freda Springs, spokeswoman for Forsyth Medical Center, said the twins were delivered two minutes apart by Caesarean section on Tuesday at the center’s Sara Lee Center for Women’s Health in Winston-Salem.

The boy weighed 10 pounds, 14 ounces; the girl, 12 pounds, 3 ounces. Springs said both babies are in excellent condition after their birth to parents Joey and Erin Maynard of Winston-Salem.

Grrr.... duff back, it won't go away.... make it go away....

Joe - have great fun downunder! Good luck and take care. I'd love to have made it over again, my favourite country and favourite musician - doesn't get any better than that. Fishermans Boat Harbour at Freo is nice. What do you think about the coldplay track thing? You've obv had a look so are you finding it amusing, or are you a bit hacked off?

Satriella/Guitarman77897 - yep, sometimes the family go, sometimes they don't, pretty sure sir joseph said they'd be making the Aus tour.

Coldplay track - I wouldn't say I'm a fan, but I do have their X&Y album. I spotted a riff on there from the German Band Kraftwerk that I can't imagine is widely known (I only knew it because of a tape one of my Dad's friends made for me when I was a kid) - but they (Coldplay) have acknowledged that so I can't imagine them 'borrowing' from something else without acknowledging that too. For me, the chord structure is similar, but that's about it...

JS1200JS1000 - if I link this right, the set list (assuming it's the same) is here. Scroll down a bit to my review - hope that helps

Blue Moon - who's jiggitying on the tennis in particular, are you checking out the Williams sisters?

Hybes - I had a feeling Joe was doing something on GH3? Can't remember why I think that.....

Dream3 - that sounds like a really cool meet with Stu. Enjoy your gigs... I know you will obviously! Tell us all how it goes

Warning - long reply to Do The Stu coming up....

Do The Stu - thanks for the comprehensive post. Yes, I knew about Dreaming etc, but post that kind of thing anyway because there are always interesting facts and things that come up... like wasn't Banana Mango 14 years in the making or something (I may have my tracks mixed know as I seem to memorise lots of 'random useless' facts)?

Your band history looks pretty good to me, and as for the JM fallout, wasn't that just JM getting bored because he didn't like the tracks? I no I read about it ages ago, I think there was a fair bit left open to interpretation

I knew about Jo/Stu/JM playing on various albums but I've never got round to checking any of it out. In that vain I think an interesting record to listen to would be Album by PIL to hear the Steve Vai work

Back to Joe - I've been a fan since I caught SWTA through a school friend, and was hooked. My guitar idols up to that point had gone something like Clapton/Knopfler, EVH.... Joe was the sound and style my ears had been waiting for!

As for the Sansa/MP3 players - yep, I'm pretty sure you posted 'what's on your MP3' player and it went from there. It's good timing as I'm just back in the must get it sorted frame of mind (can't stand running with an iPaq bouncing up and down in my pocket or a cell phone looping 8 tracks...) and if contracts and things work out I'm still planning another lil Joe trip so will need plenty of toons to keep me sane - and I've had to set my tracks to 128/KBps to get them onto a 2GB card

I love this line up - and on that topic I don't feel Out of the Sunrise is dropped from the setlist - I think it was just dropped for a particular couple of shows... hopefully the Aus fans will find out soon enough and let us know - right Big Bunny/Dream3 : ) ?

At risk of hogging the board, I'll check out the SC notes later

Have a great day all, just watching a Heroes Season 3 preview, love that show

I will be at the 'club Joe' meeting. Im hoping to bring my guitar and ask you to sign it for me.
