Hey Joe and all, looks like it's been real active here recently, I came on to find 18 pages of comments...haven't had much time recently...lol

But I had a question for Joe or anyone who might be able to answer it for me.

On the song "Lifestyle" how do you obtain that really cool effect with that the lead guitar is doing in the beginning and throughout the song. It is done with Tremolo Bar, Whammy Pedal, Wah Wah Pedal (don't think so), or just a vibrato effect?

I am just very curious about this it's just got such a great sound and adds such a cool effect and I'd like to try and play it, but I don't have have a Tremolo Bar on my guitar, so that sucks....but I might just go out and get a whammy pedal if that would help. Can anyone help me?

Thanks WhammyFreak

Guitarman77897.......No worries mate. If you're patient enough to wait for Joe( opox. 2hrs.) You'll get to meet Joe on the way to his bus. I've met Joe a millions times this way. As for body guards.....Joe usually has Mike Manning(Guitar Tech) Mick(Mgr.) or other band members or all the above with him when he leaves. I can't speak for Joe but I'm sure he wouldn't mind signing your bald cap. (I guess I'm speaking for Joe) The only thing he wont sign are non endorsed Items.....Fender,Gibson.....etc. I believe this is contractual agreement and I don't think the bald cap is under the non endorsed items...lol...I'm going to the Chicago show and can't wait. It's gonna be great.....Good Luck.....

I need a hat-where does JOe get his hats from? im a bit bored of baseball caps.

iin the welsh mountains in snowdonia i bought this sort of australian bushhat type hat thing. thought i looked like the bee's knees and every one on that trip said it looked good and then i saw the photos of me and i looked a right tit!

whats more i walked up a mountain and down it, i bet everyone thought 'who the heck does he think he is 'Baden Powell'

not quite as embarrassing as what my fiance of ten years plus found, a present i bought her in our early years- a jigsaw of myself!

I mean why? whats wrong with me!-where did the thought 'cor she will like that' come from?

work is boring and the money is shit-i hate the 9-5 grind-anyone agree. i get to try and motivate underpaid young people whod rather be having sex than doing work (and i cant blame them) every day.And whats more i have to smile and enjoy it cuz as soon as the deputy manager says its shit they will all just use it as an excuse to do even less work(which i think is just about possible)

sigh...

anyway hope i cheered you all up-laters:-D

Keniko - I was just wondering if you could elaborate a little more on the meeting of Joe after a show and signing stuff. Are you saying he will only sign a guitar if its an Ibanez or an amp if it's a Peavey and do you know if Stu has the same mindset . I would hate to drag my guitar and my bass to the show and have them not want to touch them cause their not an Ibanez or a Fender. - thanx-

Hey Samsquanch I am just jumping in here but i was at the live in Anaheim show and i had the meet and greet. Joe was a super guy, very friendly to all and he did sign my Yamaha acoustic guitar. I have heard that he will sign pretty much anything. the best part is that he is just a regular guy with an extraordinary talent. I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Samsquanch hey i just thought of something. you probably got the phone number of the guy who runs the meet and greet. when i did it it was John Iverson. he was cool and answered all my questions. i might have asked him ahead of time about the guitar but i don't remember. anyway he had given out his cell phone number in case you needed to contact him at last minute, so maybe they did the same for you? hope this helps

Zinc Master: LOL! Just a tad aggresive though, but fun nonetheless.

on non: doin' good, how 'bout urself?

Guitarman77897: You have a very good shot of talking to Joe outside the venue. Be prepared to wait over an hour though. No bodyguards, he is always very approachable.

Sorry, but I feel the need to be a bit preachy. When I was around your age I was convinced that soccer was more important than college. Soccer has given me great moments but I don't live off it, and since I didn't get my college degree I now, at 35, have to go back and get it if I want to get into the management ranks, I've pretty much hit the ceiling with what I have.

It's cool to have things that you are passionate about (Satch in your case), but don't lose sight of the major goals in your life. Sounds very preachy and fatherly-like right now, but I do regret not having paid attention to this speech when it was given to me.

still listening to Adrian Legg. Now it's The Irish Girl.

woodman300 - thanks for the input , I've never been to a Joe show and when i found out Stu was playing bass on this tour I had to get tickets. Got awesome seats for me and the g/f and I cant wait to see these two, in living person, playing playing 20 feet from my face, with my chest rattling and my ears bleeding It'll be better than sex.The topper would be to get Joe and Stu to sign my babies. I will definitely bring my babies too then (not into the venue but outside afterwards ) . Damn I am sooo stoked for this show !!!!!!!

Argh...my Jonny Lang concert was cancelled tonight. Apparently he has laryngitis. So I drove from Long Beach to Anaheim to eat an overpriced hamburger at the House Of Blues. Oh well. ;-)

Igneousiceman - Yeah, I love Eric Johnson's playing. I take it you're just getting into his stuff?

He was my introduction to instrumental guitar rock. I heard Cliffs Of Dover on KLOS a lot in the mid 1990s, and then they played Pavillion quite a bit when Venus Isle came out.

A short while later I'm looking through a magazine from Columbia House or BMG and I come across a CD called "G3: Live In Concert." My initial thought was "I'll buy this because it has Eric Johnson on it, but I've never heard of these other two guys."

And now here I am. :-)

Zinc Master - That's an interesting list, but I don't quite agree with it. I think it puts too much emphasis on used prices, which I don't think matter at all. Also, I think it'd help if there were a way to factor in total sales relative to how long an album has been out. That'd pull bands like Nirvana and Metallica off the list, who I don't think should be there yet.

Also, as much as I love Led Zeppelin, there's no reason they should have four albums on a top 20 list. All that does is show the listmaker didn't look at a wide enough variety of music.

WhammyFreak - What specific part of Lifestyle are you talking about? Can you give some specific time ranges in the track?
Keniko - "The only thing he wont sign are non endorsed Items.....Fender,Gibson.....etc."

Are you sure about that? I've never tried to get a guitar signed so I don't know, but as far as I know Ibanez lets Joe play whatever he wants in concert and on records. It sounds like his contract is pretty open. Has something changed recently?

REVAN 2008 - Joe mentioned in an interview a few years ago that he wears Project Alabama hats. I don't know if that's a brand or a store though.
Listening to: U2 - Boy [2-CD remastered edition] (current song: Boy/Girl, live at the Marquee in London, 9/22/80)

And if anyone's wondering, this remaster sounds excellent and I highly recommend it. It's very well done. I haven't listened to October or War yet but based on this and the Joshua Tree from last year, I'm sure they'll be just as good.

Do the Stu: Right at the beginning after the drum intro the heavy up-down sound that the notes have. It sounds like a mild vibratro pedal effect but it's so synchronized with one up-down per note. Almost like a half bend but way to fast for a bend, trust me I tried.

It starts at clock point 00:02 and ends at clock point 00:32 when he first starts singing and repeats throughout the song. Really awesome effect whatever it is and I just wanna know how to emulate it.

And I don't know, I've seen people on youtube just playing it without any effect (as well as myself) and it totally sounds different so there's gotta be something going on...

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Ken : Noticed that you were talking about Electric Ladyland. I think i won't learn to you that Jimi was the big crossroad of american blues & british boom. But do you know that Jimi was fascinated by Haendel? So fascinated that he lived in a flat in the London street Haendel, & had built his studio in this street?

Electric Ladyland is totally under the Haendel's influence. & that's a very good thing. Haendel has given to Jimi an other dimension.

A dimension that no bluesman had gotten before, & that no bluesman has gotten since.

Jimi is the greatest Bluesman of the 20th century. & this has something to see with Haendel.

Just a thought.

WhammyFreak - Ah, OK... I'd say he's just using the whammy bar there. If Joe is reading this it'd be cool if he could chime in, as I might be way off...but here's my reasoning:

I think it's safe to rule out his whammy pedal because he seems to use that on songs with large jumps or octaves (Cool #9, Raspberry Jam Delta-V, Bamboo). The stuff in Lifestyle isn't that "out there". Plus, the Lifestyle part is pretty fast and I've never seen him use any pedal at that tempo...but I have seen/heard him use the whammy bar at that speed in other songs.

The first part in Lifestyle sounds so clean that I can see how someone would think it could be anything, but if you listen to the same part later on in the song (like around the 2:00 mark) I think it's a bit obvious. Around 2:20 it gets a bit sloppier (in a good way...more "human") and I hear some imperfections that wouldn't be there if it were a pedal. And when it comes back at around 3:30, it sounds "bouncier" than what a pedal would give.

And lastly, I remember Joe talking about the song and saying it was one that sat around for a long time before it was released. He'd try it in the studio every now and then over the years but it never came together until ITLIS? So I'm thinking it's from the NOTE era (or maybe even The Squares), but I'll be conservative and say it's a vocal leftover from FIABD. That's still six years before Joe first used the whammy pedal on a record (his self-tilted album).

Revan: I know what you mean, when I was about 6 or 7 I went up Snowdon wearing a headband. Yes, a HEADBAND!!! What was I thinking?!?!? =D

Matt: Good hunting, bag yerself a Signature! =D

DoTheStu: Yes, I am now off out hopefully to get an Eric J cd, if my depleted funds will allow it. Is that the new remastered U2 one? Haven't listened to Boy or War much personally, I seem to end up listening to 'Unforgettable Fire', 'October' and 'Joshua Tree'. What did you think of 'How To Dismantle...'? Personally I really only liked Vertigo, but that's just me...=D

And to add my voice: Whammyfreak, I would say personally that it is the ol' whammy bar itself, 'cos I can get slightly similar sounds out of mine.
