Hybes : first, if you record guitar directly onto computer, i can't help you, because i don't.

Second, if you record with a microphone put near an amp, you before all have to find the level you need onto your amp to get the tone you wish. The key is between volume knob & master volume knob.

Third, in general, onto analogic system, you can record between -20 db until 10 db. Saturation onto analogic recording is progressive.

Fourth, in general, onto digital system, you have to not record over 0 db. Saturation onto digital recording is instantaneous over 0 db.

After, if you record onto a computer with a sequencer, each sequencer requires to be studied.

When you do your mix onto a sequencer or onto an analogic tape, only your own ears can indicate to you the stereo or mono volume of each instrument. But mix is a complex deal, so check this

The mastering is the ultimate step. The more delicat. The best i think is training yourself to record & mix during several time to learn mixing.

& the day you'll feel ready for mastering,

So..

Of course, a very good home studio is expensive. If you don't get lot of money, you'll have to be a few handyman to get honorable recording.

Edit:

Of course Joe is at the top of all that.

I also advise to the young players & the less younger that: listening to Jeff Beck. His studio work is out there since couple of time.

I want one too please, honey oak :)))

Jamie, thanks for the good thoughts for a show coming our way, but I'm with civgeek....we feel pretty slighted in the Pacific NW cuz it seems like every other tour or so, there's no room left in the schedule to get up here at all. And it's not just Portland, OR, but also any Washington or Vancouver, Canada venues that get missed. Most other locations are visited regularly on tour, but the NW...well...maybe they aren't sell-outs so that's the reason why? I dunno, but if that's the case, SHAME ON US!!!

It comes down to, we love Joe up here as much as anywhere else and wanna see him. But I unnerstand scheduling can be a beast and Joe works constantly as it is....don't wanna see him work himself to deff, but damn WE MISS HIM UP HERE!!! However, I still hold out a small hope that all the shows just aren't posted up yet.

That's one of the reasons why I make sure we get to Reno &/or San Fran, cuz I never know if there'll be a NW date. All that traveling, hotels, etc, especially with gas prices the way they are now...is pretty tough on the budget. Lots of people just can't do it. But Joe is worth it for us. We're gonna give up seeing TSO this year, just to make sure we see Joseph :) To miss seeing him play is to miss getting oxygen, especially for my son...it's vital, lol!

Hope you're enjoying your short vacation between Oz and South America Joe!! Loved the birthday video of you in Sydney, I wish the entire audience could show up in bald wigs and glasses just fer u :D :D :D Mick and Jeff looked....

....just fetching.....really :)

Hello Friends. Yesterday at Midnight it was a Starry Night in Andalusia and I heard the Echo of a New Blues. I stay up the entire night I was Out of the Sunrise. Now im living a Day at The Beach and I Just Look Up and i'm seeing a Clouds Race Across the Sky. I can't describe The Feeling. I Believe that If I Could Fly I could see The Engines of Creation, like a Super Colossal Revelation. We sometimes wonder What is our purpose?what is The Meaning of Love? I only know that a Love Thing It's so Good. And when we are Crying we think that we are Made of Tears. But Why? Is it because we are Flying in a Blue Dream?I can't say evrything I'm thinking in Ten Words, so Until we Say Goodbye I will only say: Come on Baby! I JUST WANNA ROCK

In fact I want to know what everyone thinks about a game with Joe and the G3, no as a Guitar hero but as an Accion/Adventure game with Joe making some cool attacks with his guitar as some kind of weapon. P.D.-If you don't like this idea you can also send some new ideas.

hybes,

you don't need to understand the dB thing right away, what you need to understand is... that if a record is way too loud, you will end up not hearing its subtleties, because every instrument on it is loud, mastered loud, at the same level. That means that a flute will be as loud as a kick drum.

I will take for example, "Oriental Melody". When the drums starts it kicks it right away, when the solo guitar comes in you notice that it is louder that it was supposed to be, because that solo guitar has been mastered at a loud level. You will hear the guitar plainly, but that will hinder you to pick the subtleties as tamburines, subtle cymbals. When a record is plainly loud, there are no dynamics - Dynamics is when each instrument is supposed to sound at their appropriate volume level.

You can do a comparison listening to Surfing with the Alien, (old edition) with the new "remastered" Surfing with the Alien legacy edition. The first issue has a average level of 88dB. Very well mastered. In the new version, the levels were pushed +9dB. So the songs have an average level of 97,5dB. (which is the same as saying the track has a replaygain level of -9,5dB - Because ReplayGain referece level is around 89dB). Listen to both records, the old and the new one, and you will notice that making the record louder does not improve anything, on contrary, it kills all subtleties of the record, because now everything is flat. Please check the page in Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gmex_4hreQ It's easy to understand... Loudness race is just a disease, without a cure at the moment...

I'm a few days behind on posts...let's see how many I get through tonight. I see there's a bit of a discussion about the "loudness war"...I have some stuff to say about that but I may wait until my next post... In general though, I'll say there's a difference between what the loudness peak is on an album and how dynamic the recording is as a whole. Also, it's possible for an album to sound great regardless of what any waveforms look like. Yes, PSATMOR is "louder" overall than many of Satch's other albums...but I think it still sounds OK. There aren't a million instruments fighting for space or anything like that.

Rockstar28 - Awesome...it's cool to hear that you had fun at your show. How did you get into Satch at such a young age?
maritime - I look forward to seeing your pictures. :-)
hybes - It's really cool that you're going to be able to make it to a Satch gig on this tour...it's been fun hearing about how you're trying to get your wife on your side regarding the JS1000 as well. Soon...?

About my journalism career (hmmm, it seems weird saying that), I really looked at my time in sports as an opportunity to do something I hadn't ever really done before. When I worked at my school paper I did a lot of news and arts/entertainment, and a bit of opinion stuff, but not too much sports. So it was nice to spend nine months getting a taste of that...and I do love sports.

But I love the news side of things much more. I like how it's so unpredictable, and how the front page can change several times over the course of the night. As cool as sports is, at the end of the day it's really just event coverage...it's not quite interesting enough for me.

Zenfish - " the last Deep Purple is good work, but i'm not really into that kind of stuff. Hope you won't be disappointed"

No, I'm not disappointed; it's good to hear you gave it a listen though. There's a lot of music out there, and there's still plenty that we both like.

1844rocks - Have you figured out what that song is yet? If not, I'll put my DVD in and check for you...I don't recall what it is off the top of my head.
nickguitarmeistro - Thanks for the link. It's too late to listen now without waking my neighbors, but I'll go through your songs tomorrow morning.
BigBunny - "about the Tour...i don't care for Armstrong. do you think he was a druggie?"

Your question was directed to Igneousiceman but I wanted to throw my two cents in. I think he was always clean. He's been tested hundreds of times during the Tour and those tests have never been positive. If he was cheating, it would have come out by now. It doesn't matter how famous you are...that stuff always comes out.

But I think the strongest evidence is in the other riders. When Armstrong was a Tour regular, there weren't many high profile riders who tested positive. I'm sure on the "inside" riders know who dopes and who doesn't. They knew Armstrong was clean so they had to stay clean. Once he stopped doing the tour, it seems to me the doping incidents increased a bit. I don't think that's just a coincidence.

Well, this post is long so I'll stop here. I have 30 posts to go...

...Austin...
