Zf: To be honest, at this point I'm not sure what career to follow. I was thinking of medicine or something like that. But, I like les langues...except grammar. Which is what I ended up doing for about THREE hours today. German followed by le francais. C'etait un peu barbant, malheuresement. (see, I actually know some french...=D)

Matt: Well, 'insanely' smart may be a sliiiiight over-exaggeration...;-) Pushups would be a welcome diversion from conjugating verbs I can tell you. Big Dipper sounds ok...I was once on a trip over in the states (won a competition) and we were in a planetarium near Cocoa Beach FL; we had a 'lesson' on the night sky, so I should know more about that. I don't though...(that seemed like a waste of typing time)

DTS: You got that all wrong pal, it's you crazy USA'ers that call University 'college'....=D

Weekend now, no college for two days...time for a nice long sleep. Oh, and homework...

WHEN YOU COME TO CALGARY, PLEASE DO A CLINIC OR SOMETHING AT AXEMUSIC!!!!!!

I, and a whole lot of other dedicated guitar players would really really LOVE it if you could just do a clinic at the biggest music store in town. That store is hosting michael angelo battio, and tons of other famous acts, and yeah, you should really go.

Finally saw the last Burton, the musical movie Sweeney Todd.

Dark image, luminous music, tragic story, comic dynamism... well.. Ironic.

Simply marvelous.

Tuesdayschild - Thanks for posting that song...I'm listening to it now. It doesn't sound at all like what I thought it would, so that's very cool. The band sounds good...I'll have to check out some of their other songs later.

So the weekend is here...are you going camping again or anything like that?

I'm going to a wedding Saturday...the girl I tried to take to that Led Zepagain show a while ago is a friend of the bride, so she'll be there. I think she's seeing someone now and I'm kinda over the whole thing anyway, but it'll be interesting to see how the day goes.

After that I'm driving up to Northern California for a Dave Matthews Band show on Sunday. It's kind of the last show of their summer tour (except for a benefit in New York a few days later), and the date happens to be the birthday of their sax player who died last month.

I have to drive all the way home after that, because I'm going to another concert (Shinedown, the hard rock band I've talked about a bit here) Monday. That one's a bit closer to home, which is good considering I'll be driving about 800 miles on Saturday and Sunday.

If you (or anyone, for that matter) have any suggestions on what I should listen to while I'm driving, post 'em here. I'll check T2J before I leave...

Zf: Oh don't get me wrong, grammar doesn't bother me that much; it's just that I learn better through 'doing' if you know what I mean. As in, I seem to have learnt many grammar rules just by speaking . Unfortuantely, it seems that most foreigners I meet speak perfect English...so that reduces the need for English linguists. I'd be happy just being able to live in France or Germany or wherever and be able to speak normally. (I am going to try and include as much francais as I can in my posts now to practice...=D) Mon studio est un 'Boss BR-600', je l'ai achete pour £200 il y a deux annees. (was that right for 'two years ago'?)

Revdom: You've hit the nail on the head there; I hear people around me saying "oh, I want to do this so I can earn a million" or whatever, and let's be reasonable...the chances are they will just end up like everyone else! Oh, and don't you just love the cover for Afterburner? Dirty Dog isn't a bad tune either...

DTS: How about Rush in Rio if you have it on cd? Or ITLIS? Or even something like Signals or Hold Your Fire...or....(I'll stop now =D)

Don't be driven by money. Even if it pays alot, if you have to drag yourself out of bed to go, then it's not worth it. do something you love to do. the thing is (for me) My three favorite things to are play guitar, play videogames, and bike. it will be very hard to get a guitar playing career. playing videogames pays so low it's almost for free. and I would have to win the tour de France for biking. I don't know what I should do.

Igneous : i don't want to get you wrong. Just talking to you.

Grammar, phonetic, orthography, etymology, polysemy... are simply tools necessary for a linguist pro. That's all.

You can communicate, you can be a writer without all these tools, but you can't become a linguist pro. & how could you be a good translator pro, oral or in writing, without a real knowledge of all these tools? I don't see. Sorry. It's a few like the solfege. You can be an artist without knowledge of solfege. But you can't be a studio musician pro.

German sounds to me a very good strategic choice.

But all that is very serious.. sorry.. you'll do what you'll do. Good luck.

Edit:

your french sentence :"Mon studio est un 'Boss BR-600', je l'ai achete pour £200 il y a deux annees" is correct. But you forget two acute accents:

acheté

années.

There's different accents in french: acute : é, grave : è, circumflex ê. There's also the umlaut : ë. They are all used a lot in french. If this can help.

Hi all,

Webmaster - if I change my nick, do I lose all previous posts? Or do they remain attached to the new nick, or something else? And if you then search for posts on the old/new nick what results do you get?

Joe - were you a guest when Metallica recorded S & M at Berkeley in 99? Am expecting you were busy elsewhere but just wondered

Do The Stu - sent Wed 27 Aug 08 15:28 ..... or thereabouts ; ) Sent to gmail, should show up as me (as in Satrini) but occasionally if I'm not at my desktop it sends Webmail as the sender

Have to love Spa as a race circuit! Go Lewis (Hamilton), I really want him to take the F1 championship this year, he was really unlucky last year.... but watching makes me miss racing WAY too much : (

Couple more vids added to my Youtoob channel - not very good actually, you can really tell it's been a while since I played (can't actually make some of the stretches - doh!), but here they are anyway

Hi DTS...when I'm driving I like to listen to something that I can sing along to....so what about...Damn Yankees!

you're prob at that wedding as I post here, I hope it goes well for you. Wow what a busy couple of days you have! I'd be interested to hear how both DMB and Shinedown go.

The guys in Twister are writing at the moment, there's one song called Red Eyed and Rollin that's coming on really good. Very ACDC. Recording is due October. Their first CD was that 'song for a friend' then about 5 covers (Paranoid, Fool for your Lovin...that type of thing), but this next CD will only have one cover, and they're not sure what yet.

Any suggestions?

They haven't a clue about promoting themselves....not internet savvy at all I think I can help with myspace pages and things like that. I'm happy with the Youtube channel I did although it need live footage and lots of songs to add to it. I'm planning to take a video camera into recording and take some footage of them, and some live gigs too.

Mmmmn, I've been seeing that guy for...what....2 weeks. He asked me to marry him last night!

Thanks for the suggestions...here we go:

REVAN 2008 - I don't have Afterburner, so we'll have to go with Z.Z. Top's Greatest Hits. I haven't listened to that in forever, so it's a good choice.

Igneousiceman - Rush In Rio is great, thanks. As for your other suggestions, ITLIS? is already on my list and I'm listening to Signals right now. ;-)
Joe Satrini - Your posts stay with you if you change your nickname. And when you change it, it changes everywhere on the site where your name is a hyperlink (T2J, show attendance, show reviews, etc.). So if you change it today, it'll look like you've been posting under your new name since Day 1. As far as finding things goes, if you search for "Joe Satrini" it'd pull up all posts from others that mention that name. (A quick aside, that's why I always use full usernames in my replies. "Joe Satrini" isn't as personal as "Phil" but it makes it easier to search for things later). I've gone by nitsua111, It is Stu not boo, and Serak the Preparer for brief stints in the past. I have a new name in mind that I may switch to for the upcoming U.S. tour...we'll see.

Thanks for the email info...I don't have time to look for it now, but I'll save your message and look for it after the weekend.

Tuesdayschild - I don't have any Damn Yankees, so I'll have to go with Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch fever. That's another album I haven't listened to in a long time, so it'll be a good one.
Listening to: Rush - Signals (current song: Countdown)

It's weird listening to this song, which contains radio clips from the shuttle Columbia's first mission... Steve Morse recorded Contact Lost, on Deep Purple's Bananas, and Eric Johnson recorded Columbia, on Bloom...both were written about Columbia's last mission.

Anyway, I don't know where this song ranks among other Rush fans, but I like it quite a bit. I wonder what the band thinks of it...it would've been cool for it to come out on the R30 tour as a bit of a tribute, maybe.

greatest hits is a quality choice DTS, some bosters on that. but seek out afterburner its a great album. and eliminater if you have nt got that-i thinks that there most sucessful?

they just get a blusey groove going, love them!

video games can pay a shed load -if you program-i once saw a job advertised as a graphic artist for the now defunct RAGE software which paid £40 PH.

igneous-why not run a photography night class alongside your main study. theres money to be made in photography. you've got the eye.

thats what i did, in the days of film and dark room processing(back in the days of horse drawn carts and a bow and arrow was considered state of the art firepower). but it gave me some discipline in my work which i still use today. i did a city and guilds course and got a distinction (do they still do C+G now a days?)

well if you want anya dvice im here-ill try and pass on my wisdom if thats what you'd call it-lol

but one word of advice-as with anything creative you have to be real pasionate to get anywhere , do it as a day job, as in somthing you 'have ' to do and it will show through your work.

It was a great night around my house last night....for me anyway. I FINALLY got the JS1000!! Caught a pretty good sale at Guitar Center. I have had to sell most everything I own on Ebay so that I could come up with most of the money. Very happy though. It plays great!

This is my first guitar with a temelo however. If it ever breatks, I'm in trouble. Just stringing it looks to be far more complicated than anything I have every played. Keep in mind, I played drums for 30 years...I have now been playing guitar for 2 and half years.

So now that I have my first tremelo, does anyone know how to explain the whammy tricks Joe uses?

I got the guitar last night at about 7 o'clock, and i played until 2 in the morning. It's smooth as silk!
