U2's Bono and The Edge writing music for Spider-Man: The Musical

$40 million production to be Broadway's biggest

You'd think that Bono and The Edge, still finishing U2's new album, No Line On The Horizon, would have little time for outside projects. But the two are writing the score for the upcoming Broadway production of Spiderman: The Musical.

Although the lavish production, said to feature state-of-the-art lighting and sets, isn't due to open till sometime next year, it's already making history of sorts.

No line on the budget At a reported cost of $40 million, the Spider-Man musical will be the most expensive in Broadway history - that's a weekly running tab of close to $1 millon. It is estimated that the show will have to run succesfully - now, get this - for 8,000 years to break even. (Uh, yeah, that'll happen.)

The show is being helmed by The Lion King's director Julie Taymor, no stranger to cost overruns and clashes with producers. A source says, "She doesn't care what it costs. Does not care at all. Her attitude is, it's for the art, and you don't question artists."

Okay, then. Well, at least the music should be good. This isn't the first comic book collabo for U2: They contributed Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me to the Batman Forever soundtrack.

In the meantime, U2 are still pounding away on No Line On The Horizon, which will cost considerably less than $40 million. And won't take nearly as long to break even.

Hey all...it's really cool to hear how things are going with the tour now. I love hearing/reading the stories.

Blue Moon, well done on diploma! I've got my Paul Gilbert ticket for the 21st November...had it booked from May! Any plans to go to the Judas Priest/Megadeath/Testament gig in Feb?

My 11 year old son started guitar lessons a couple of weeks ago. So far he's learnt Layla, Back in Black and Tesla's 'love is'. His guitar teacher is very impressed...at his ability, and also depth and breadth of knowledge of guitar players and rock music (I take all the credit for that) but unfortunately he's not a Joe Satch fan...

He likes Eric Clapton instead...can't be held against the guy I suppose.

Out Of The Setlist: Now that you mention it, yes! It's unfortunate really, 'cos I heard songs like 'Friends' on that DVD first, and they don't quite sound as good on the studio albums to me. Great show that though...
Spiderman The musical, what the?! Will there be a Spider-Pig musical I wonder?
Tuesdays Child: Give him time, he'll soon come over to the dark side. =D

Roffler & Fatape - thanks for the response ref the flinstsones theme. We can't find a definitive answer either. Google not my friend on that one! I'm still going to plump for DZappa at the mo as the harmonies are reminding me of stuff from his confessions album

Out of the Setlist - I just wondered if there had been any other setlists posted in the reviews since then as maybe Zuper missed a few (no offence Zuper Dave!)? I don't think I've been to a Satch gig yet where he has dropped several tracksso I'm hoping for everyone that just a few got missed. I know I struggle to remember them all, but over here we got: I Just wanna rock, Overdriver, Satch Boogie, Diddle-Y-a-do-dat, Revelation, Ice 9, Ghosts, One big rush, Musterion, Out of the Sunrise, Time Machine, Cool No.9, Flying in a Blue dream, Andalusia, Super Colossal, , Mystical Potato Head , Bass Solo, Cryin, Always with me always with you, Surfing with the Alien, and then Crowd chant, Summer song as the encore

As for your nickname, I wondered why you were so confident you'd get it back (assumed you'd done it before) so yep, I hope you managed to go and reserve it somehow in case you need to come back LOL But OOTS is pretty cool

Igenousiceman - yep, I've heard about the criticism, it's the same kind of thing that used to be said about Mansell, Senna and Schumacher after those three had put tough moves on various drivers. I have no problem (so far) with any of his moves. As for the FIA (specifically related to penalising Bourdais), I thing yesterday proved how biased they are to Ferrari. The sport is obviously bent. Some of the reporters I know are completely gobsmacked that Lewis & Sebastian got penalties... apart from their incidents involved Red Italian cars.... am hopefully watching Part 2 of the guitar thing tonight

Roo - ha, LOL, I grew up on the JS3 too. You say the finish on the BDG will wear? I thought it had been protected, and it was more likely the 10th you have to worry about? It must be a real drool worthy site to line all four of them up together. Got a (low res!) pic of that?

Interesting what you say about the 2KPLT. Has Joe recorded anything with one?

Maybe if you have time you run a quick riff on each one and record it to show the tonal differences? That's if you can tear yourself away from playing them and your supersite. Can't be enough hours in the day...!

Ibanezguitars - Kimi & Felippe are contracted to Ferrari for 2009, and I don't think you'll see Fernando in a Ferrari in 2010 either, but will wait and see

Right, gotta go, time for food! : )

You might be right, but there's something quite suspicious, and that is that Banco Santander has already signed sponsoring the red cars from next year, and Banco Santander was quite involved in the move of Alonso to McLaren two years ago. Therefore, the smell of money makes me think Alonso will be in Ferrari in 2010, if not earlier.
But as you say, we will see what happens...

Zinc Master - Thanks for finding that interview, even if the rainbow of colors made it nearly impossible to read... ;-) It's interesting that Joe says the album will be out before the end of the year...surely he misspoke?

shinzo - Welcome to the site, and enjoy the gig!
alexandrecaetano - You've got a girlfriend? Congrats! ;-)
Joe Satrini - Well, Satch has always made small changes to the setlist as tours go on. Usually they're changes to something "safe" which bugs me, but it's not really right for me to complain.

At the start of the EOC tour, the second set opened with Down, Down, Down, Clouds Race Across The Sky, and A Train Of Angels. Those three songs were dropped and House Full Of Bullets was added sometime along the way (probably on an international leg), and the set stayed that way for the LISF recording.

I can recall similar changes on just about every tour since then. This one does seem to have the most changes, but if Mountain is playing longer than just 30-45 minutes it's understandable. And ZuperDave did post somewhere saying he checked the set of another show in the reviews section and it was the same.

Yeah, it sucks when your closest city gets skipped. I can't really afford to make the trip to SF. College life ya know? But life is good, it's busy as heck but good. I am excited to see Iced Earth this month in Portland AND next month in Seattle!!! I've been waiting years to see them w/ Barlow on vocals.

JS_JS - How's college going? What are you majoring in?

It's too bad you can't make it to a Satch gig, but there's always the next tour. ;-) Enjoy the Iced Earth shows...

shinzo - So...tell us a bit about yourself. Will this be your first Satch show? How long have you been a fan? What other music are you into?
PhilTheMetalhead - I saw the first one and thought it was great, and then the second one and thought it was so-so. I haven't seen any of them since then and I doubt I will.

However, I think Tobin Bell is an excellent actor and it's cool to see him as Jigsaw. I know him best as Darryl Weaver from the Brand X episode of The X-Files. People here may know him better as the record store owner from The Old Man episode of Seinfeld...but today is 1013 so I had to go with the X-Files reference first.

Wow...not a good day for me at all. First I go to the meet n' greet at Daddy's Music in Boston, and I get told that I had to sign up online...where, I don't know...The store's website is terrible. So I get outside, not in a great mood, and some asshole chucks his lit cigarette at me. Oh, and to top it all off, the Red Sox are losing, 5-0.
