Thanks Skippygirl!
I was first introduced to Joe Satriani back in the late 80s. Randy Rhoads was my hero,
and I remember staring at the fretboard thinking, “somehow, it all happens here!”
Anyway, I bought an issue of “Guitar For The Practicing Musician”, and was totally lost
with all the technical ramblings. But one lesson in there actually proved to be very interesting!
It was Joe’s lesson on “Octaves”. Simple as it may seem, but he made it very interesting,
and I remember playing octaves all day long! I had never heard him play the guitar, but it was obvious
he was a tremendous teacher, and knew how to communicate theory -and more importantly, make it fun and inspiring.
Around the time “Flying in a Blue Dream” came out, I met a friend who taught me some scales.
He was a huge Satch fan, and there I was introduced. I loved the whole album, his bluesy expressiveness
and passionate technical style.
One day, he (my friend) was playing “Not of This Earth”, and freaking out over “Driving at Night”. Then “Rubina” came on…and that was it for me – I was finished! He made me this compilation tape (those were cassette days for me!) and I would listen to that song over and over.
I was so glad to get the cd, as there was a worn spot on my tape from excessive listening to that song! (seriously). To me, that has to be the single greatest studio moment for any guitar I’ve ever heard.
I would challenge any guitar player to hit “that legato phrase” (Joe fans know) even close to the way he does in that recording. That phrase, and solo, along with Randy’s live “Goodbye To Romance” are my favorite guitar solo moments.
It would be tough to single out other favorite Satriani songs. I think “Echo”, “The Forgotten”, “I Believe”
( what a solo!), and of course the popular “Always With Me, Always With You”.
I haven’t listened to Joe in a while, but look forward to checking out his new material. I’d been away from the guitar for some time, and bought the “Live San Francisco” dvd. I loved it! And it reminded me just how much fun you can have with a guitar!

pendulumswing Bill - ah yes, a wonderful story similar to many (esp. me) about discovering Joe and being blown away by his amazing talent and the way he can express emotion with the guitar. Great to have you on board, lots of people have followed Joe from the start, some like me re-discovered Joe by accident - I was a big fan of SWTA but never really saw a video or heard an interview.
Many years later (as in about 3 years ago) I got a new home PC and began ripping the boxes of CD's into iTunes and found SWTA again, made iti nto a playlist on my ipod to go walking with, and then googled "Joe Satriani" and went wow, the first thing that came up was the Fantasy Studios vid on youtube - Surfing.

Skippy- Yes it was very tempting I will have to admit. The "itch" has returned once again. The voices say " Get a band together!", then I say "But I am way too busy right now!" Then they say "Life is short Burly, live a little!" and I say " Well maybe just a little jam wouldn't be so bad" I think I am giving in. I am so weak ;-)
Gotta run, busy day in the plans.

Blue Moon - oh yes, ya gotta love unecessary female nudity in horror flicks. It always makes me laugh when they do that, so dumb. What movie were you watching to inspire that post?
Igneous - ah yeh, I think I remember that. Was it an ex football player? He seemed to cover the stages pretty well. It's definitely a popular idea, out of season I think could be a great trip (mental note to put on things to do list...). Post some of yer Guitar playing. FTLOG is an awesome song, so lets hear it please : )
GoldenGirl2 - oops, I missed your post to me, soz! My guitars are mainly behaving. It's more my hands that misbehave when I tell them to play this phrase this way... and then they don't LOL Personality wise... interesting.... the red Washburn gets most of the use and is nice, good tone, but flawed. The graphic Joe guitar is amazing, and inspiring. You've reminded me I have a strat copy I must break out as it must be lonely : )
PhilTheMetalHead - nice Vid, Pablo was cool
Michelle - nice find on that Jeff/Rod post
Do The Stu - ahem, that Bass Player looks about 7 years old. You cradle snatcher you mwah ha ha!

JSPhil: Once I get past the fiendish solo and get a yootoob account then consider it done! (Unless I get bored of it which sometimes happens to me...) I quite fancy learning Damage Control by John Petrucci as well, but that's 10mins long...How about Flight of the Bumblebee instead?!
