Hi Joe,

I was so pleased to meet you last night at Guitar Trader in San Diego. Thank you so much for having those types of events. Thanks for drawing on my JS100 again and signing your pic for my son James. Picture is already framed and on his wall. I am so blown away by your sincerity and humble demeanor in person. Thank you for being exactly who you are. With no radio support, your fan base is still strong and more coherent than ever.

Your music has enriched my life so very much.

Have a great show tonight.

I'm leaving for my first of four Satch gigs in just a little bit. If anyone reading this will be at the show tonight, please say hi. It's always nice to meet new people. :-)

I'll post some kind of VERY brief review here when I get back. For some of the other shows, though, it'll be a few days before I'm near a computer and can post my thoughts.

Anyway...

Roo and MJS99 - great to hear from you, there has to be more of us surely?

You two look like serious guitar players - can you share your stories with me? I have seen your website, Roo, pretty cool.

Austin - probably a dumb question but how do you know who receives the afershow passes? Are you part of that process?

Mitch Mitchell, drummer for Hendrix, found dead Nov. 12, 2008, 8:47 PM EST PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience of the 1960s and the group's last surviving member, was found dead in his hotel room early Wednesday. He was 61.

Mitchell was a powerful force on the Hendrix band's 1967 debut album "Are You Experienced?" as well as the trio's albums "Electric Ladyland" and "Axis: Bold As Love." He had an explosive drumming style that can be heard in hard-charging songs such as "Fire" and "Manic Depression."

The Englishman had been drumming for the Experience Hendrix Tour, which performed Friday in Portland. It was the last stop on the West Coast part of the tour.

Hendrix died in 1970. Bass player Noel Redding died in 2003.

An employee at Portland's Benson Hotel called police after discovering Mitchell's body.

Erin Patrick, a deputy medical examiner, said Mitchell apparently died of natural causes. An autopsy was planned.

"He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend," said Janie Hendrix, chief executive of the Experience Hendrix Tour and Jimi Hendrix' stepsister. "His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated."

Bob Merlis, a spokesman for the tour, said Mitchell had stayed in Portland for a four-day vacation and planned to leave Wednesday.

"It was a devastating surprise," Merlis said. "Nobody drummed like he did."

He said he saw Mitchell perform two weeks ago in Los Angeles, and the drummer appeared to be healthy and upbeat.

Merlis said the tour was designed to bring together veteran musicians who had known Hendrix — like Mitchell — and younger artists, such as Grammy-nominated winner Jonny Lang, who have been influenced by him.

Blues-rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who is 31 and was part of the tour, said Mitchell was to the drums what Hendrix was to the guitar.

"Today many of us have lost a dear friend, and the world has lost a rock n' roll hero," he said.

Mitchell was a one-of-a-kind drummer whose "jazz-tinged" style was influenced by Max Roach and Elvin Jones, Merlis said. The work was a vital part of both the Jimi Hendrix Experience in the 1960s and the Experience Hendrix Tour that ended last week, he said.

"If Jimi Hendrix were still alive," Merlis said, "he would have acknowledged that."

During his career Mitchell played with the best in the business — not just Hendrix, but also Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Keith Richards, Jack Bruce, Jeff Beck, Muddy Waters and others.

Mitchell performed with Hendrix and Redding at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, the U.S. debut of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He also was member of a later version of the band that performed the closing set of the Woodstock Festival in August 1969 — where Hendrix played a psychedelic version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before the band launched into "Purple Haze."

The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 1992. According to the Hall of Fame, Mitchell was born July 9, 1947, in Ealing, England.

Terry Stewart, chief executive of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, said Mitchell transformed his instrument from a "strictly percussive element to a lead instrument."

"His interplay with Jimi Hendrix's guitar on songs like 'Fire' is truly amazing," Stewart said Wednesday. "Mitch Mitchell had a massive influence on rock 'n' roll drumming and took it to new heights."

Hendrix, Redding and Mitchell held their first rehearsal in October 1966, according to the Hall of Fame's Web site.

In an interview last month with the Boston Herald, Mitchell said he met Hendrix "in this sleazy little club."

"We did some Chuck Berry and took it from there," Mitchell told the newspaper. "I suppose it worked."

RIP, Mitch Mitchell.

I just saw him in concert two weeks ago (the same Experience Hendrix show in LA mentioned in that obituary)...it was really neat to see him up there with everyone.

I wonder if Joe knows yet...he didn't say anything about it at the show tonight (more on that from me in a bit.).

Joe actually got to play guitar with Mitch on drums, at an Experience Hendrix show in SF in 2004. I met Joe a few months after that at an in-store at Tower Records on Sunset, and I gave him a bootleg of that show. Joe's face lit up with the biggest smile I've ever seen from anyone and he told me how he loved getting to share the stage with Mitch and Billy Cox.

cosmic_ape - You might be at the LA show? Awesome... Where's your ticket? I'll be up in the pit.

I'll email my cell phone number to the Hotmail address in your profile here. Send me a text message or something at the show (or in line beforehand)...it's be nice to put a face to your username...

Skippygirl - If I were part of the process I would have won both nights. ;-) As SuperDaveMcCarthy explained, the winners are posted on the road page. The drawing is automated, I think it happens at 3 a.m. Pacific time three days before each show.

I've actually had lousy luck with the passes. By the end of this tour I'll have been to 19 shows that have had an aftershow drawing (3 of them didn't...the opening night of the EOC tour and two in-stores)...some shows had as many as three winners, but I haven't ever won. My brother has entered for the few shows he's been to, as has my dad. He actually won for the G3 show in LA last year, so I got to do the aftershow thing then.

GoldenGirl2 - Please pray for the rain to come AFTER this weekend's Satch shows. I don't want to be standing outside the door of the Warfield in the pouring rain for 5 hours Saturday. ;-)

I thought I'd post a few quick notes from the San Diego show...

I really enjoyed Mountain's set...they can PLAY, and they're having a lot of fun at the same time. I got one of the many drumsticks that was thrown into the crowd, and I got a pick from the bassist too.

Satch's set was good, but I can tell it's the end of the tour...the band seems settled and set into their routine. There weren't as many improv moments as there have been in the past, unfortunately (no Always... jam, no Summer Song intro). Highlights for me were Ghosts and Time Machine. This was also one of the strongest versions of Satch Boogie I've ever heard him do.

Flying In A Blue Dream sounded a bit off early on, almost as if Joe was playing it faster than the rest of the band. I don't know if that's what was happening, but it just seemed weird.

Leslie West came out for the covers at the end, and then Joe also invited out Steve Salas on guitar. Joe said he had played with him like 20 years ago. I've never heard of him, but I looked him up Wikipedia says he was in a band called Tierra in the 70s and 80s (although he played trombone and percussion there).

It was hard to hear Steve's playing over everyone else, but he had a unique approach to his solos from what I could hear. He was much more percussive (but not tapping...it's hard to describe) with his playing than most guitarists are. It was cool.

I need to get some sleep now...then it's off to LA. And after that show I'm driving up to SF to go get Al.

...Austin...

This may come in handy someday.

Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are home, call someone on your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

-----------------------------------------------------------------

We have a huge council house in our street.

The extended family is run by a grumpy old woman with a pack of fierce dogs.

Her car isn't taxed or insured, and doesn't even have a number plate, but the police still do nothing.

Her bad tempered old man is famous for upsetting foreigners with racist comments.

A shopkeeper blames him for ordering the murder of his son and his son's girlfriend, but nothing has been proven yet.

All their kids have broken marriages except the youngest, who everyone thought was gay.

Two grandsons are meant to be in the Army but are always seen out in nightclubs.

The family's odd antics are always in the papers. They are out of control...

Honestly - who'd live near Windsor Castle?

FEMALE PRAYER
Before I lay me down to sleep,
I pray for a man, who's not a creep,
One who's handsome, smart and strong
One who loves to listen long,
One who thinks before he speaks,
One who'll call, not wait for weeks.
I pray he's gainfully employed,
When I spend his cash, won't be annoyed.
Pulls out my chair and opens my door,
Massages my back and begs to do more.
Oh! Send me a man who'll make love to my mind, Knows what to answer to "how big is my behind?"
I pray that this man will love me to no end,
And always be my very best friend.
Amen

MALE PRAYER
I pray for a deaf mute nymphomaniac with big jugs who owns a liquor store and a fishing boat. This doesn't rhyme and I don't give a toss.
Amen

Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart to reform The Faces

Rehearsal booked for Monday!

(from music radar)

From one dirty rock 'n' roll band to another...

Rod Stewart has confirmed that The Faces are set to reunite for rehearsals, with a full reformation likely.

Speaking to Raysgigs.com, Stewart said that all of the surviving members were due to assemble for a rehearsal on 17 November.

Stewart's touring bassist is expected to fill in for original bassist Ronnie Lane, who passed away in 1997.

Ronnie Wood is on board, which casts further doubt on his future in The Rolling Stones, following speculation that recent tabloid attention regarding his personal life has caused disquiet in the Stones camp.

The Faces split in December 1975 following Wood's increasing involvement with The Rolling Stones. Wood went on to officially become a Rolling Stone in February 1976.
