Hey Joe, I have been a fan of yours for quite some time and have been to many of your gigs. It's great when you are in Austin playing. It's worth the 3 hour drive to get there!!!

I hope all goes well in your suit against coldplay. The first and only time I heard that song I knew it was your song. Sad that people feel that they can get away with something like this, anyways just know that there are a lot of people behind you.

Also, on a different note and something to think about at a later time. Have you ever thought of having key chains made that look like your guitars? Cool Idea, HUH? Yes? No? Anyways just a thought.

Cappy, 3 minutes of yer life...gone forever. lol!

I got a bad cold. I sound like a man when I talk. My husband and son have been laughing at me for 2 days. Yesterday I took a nap on the sofa, and when I woke up I said something to my husband, and my voice was sooo low, I laughed for 5 minutes. Just couldn't stop laughing, and every time I tried to talk, I'd laugh again. I'm glad I'm still entertaining when I'm sick. lol!

I blame Canada!

OMG! I have soo much catching up to do.

My man and I are doin OK. A lot of stuff goin on at work and a local radio station. Went to a gig Friday night and met my favorite DJs, listened to cover bands, had a Brit dinner at Britannia Arms and met a few musicians--the place was packed so Steve and I had to sit at a table out back. Had fun.

Igneousiceman--Re: Panama, one of my favorite Van Halen songs--the sucker rocks big time!!

Glitzman--So far Crystal Planet is my favorite Satch album. I love the drumming on "Train of Angels" and the guitar progression. Need to buy more albums as I can. I'm very short of cash right now.

DoTheStu--I like your balanced approach to the Satriani/ColdPlay law suit. Your view on this subject is so welcome. I also need to catch up on what's going on--too many other things going on. Regarding ITLIS--I haven't bought any albums in December. I bought PSAMOR, 2 copies one for myself and the other for my nephew. That's it. I'm afraid ITLIS will have to wait. Also, I am looking forward to getting my Fender Acoustic Guitar either this week or next.

Maritime--My weary hope looks forward to the resolution of this complex court case involving Joe and ColdPlay. This is not 'cut and dried", but I do believe this is a solid issue. I just want justice to prevail. ALSO I LIKE TO READ YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR (HUMOUR?) BECAUSE IT IS SO REFRESHING!

MICHELLE & TRACIE--You two make me laugh and I don't know what this board would be like without you both.

Time for breakfast.

All the best to you T2Jers.

alright dudes and dudettes. I have a couple of questions for the master. 1. Which of your own songs is your favourite to play live? 2. which song by any other artist (dead or living) do you wish you had written? 3. who has been your favourite artist to work with? 4. who's been the worst? 5. who the hell is moe batriani :-) 6. any news on the 'chickenfoot' front? cheers Joe live long and prosper...

Thought this was very interesting.....

A good take and I think he just might know what the hell he is talking about.

Do I think Coldplay sat down and said, "Let's steal this song!" Probably not.... I hope not. I dont really like their "pop" music and I am thinking that they played ignorant and arrogant. Reminds me of Oasis... Lame.....

Check the link. Good accurate info I think.

I said this on my last post:

...I think the musical aspect can very much be justified as a copy, now the intention is always tricky... the melody is there, VLV is built on that theme and then it has many variations that take place in order to accommodate the lyrics... we have melody, rhythm and ( I haven't analyzed the chord voicings used on CP's song, the progression is the same) possibly harmony been way too similar...

it looks like somebody beat me to proving it... thanks to whoever posted this... in case you missed it, Did Coldplay copy Joe Satriani? Let's Do the Music Theory...

As stated in the video, the harmony is there, too... that's three out of three... I did not elaborate on the rhythm, but this guy did it for me, too (thanks, dude!)... the feel is the same, the tempo, pretty much there, too... too many things being too similar, it looks fishy if you ask me!

now, all musicians out there, back me up on this... would you say most of CP's hits have a "two feel"? I am not a fan of theirs, but I have been exposed to their music, (hello they're mainstream!) I'd even go on a dare and say the "two feel" could be considered part of their signature sound!!! All of the sudden, this new hit has an upbeat overall "four feel" and on top of that, shares almost every single musical component with a song JOE released 4 years ago... It's something to consider, definitely...
]
A quick search on youtube helped me determine that they do have an overall two feel... "Clocks", "Fix You", "Trouble", "Speed of Sound", all of those can fit into that category...

For those who don't study music, a "two feel" is basically when you have a song that has, in this case in particular, four beats per measure (you know when they drummer counts 1, 2, 3, 4... it's like 95%of the music you hear on the radio), but the musicians accent beats one and three, so the overall feeling is that the tune has only TWO beats per measure ... example

you have four beats, like this:

1...2...3...4...

but they play it like this

ONE...two...THREE...four...

As a result, the melody feels more relaxed, it has more space and room to breathe... Granted, a lot of ballads have this feel, but this band has made its name and built its reputation upon this foundation... Going out of that comfort zone in a song that has arguably way too many components of another song already just does not help their case... my 2 cents...

The problem with the music theory vid from creativeguitars is he only shows why the chord progressions are similar (and tempo/meter are the same) NONE OF WHICH IS COPYRIGHT PROTECTED MATERIAL. What makes Joe's case is the MELODY, and I've yet to see someone write it out note for note in standard time signature treble clef fashion. I've noticed slight variances between the two, but I do think Joe's case is extremely solid or else the lawsuit would not have been pursued by Our Hero.

Totally with you, Joe!

...peace2all...

~Faye

p.s. and he states verbally the melodies differ and he was corrected in the comments so he takes it back there in the comments section.
