Slan - Hope the wee fella starts to buck up soon, I know what it's like. We had all sorts of bother with young shredder when he was a baby and sometimes wondered if he was ever gonna get well. Now he's a big strong noisy moody teenager who seems to live on his own very strange planet most of the time.

My two penn'orth on the Coldplay thing - I guess Joe knows exactly what he is doing and why, but that's his business not mine. I do know though that there are lots of things that Joe has done over the years that remind me of other artists work. I think at times there must be a very fine line between being inspired by a particular passage from someone elses work and plagiarism.

Hi Everyone--When I first signed on the board here about a month ago. I brought up the issue of Copyright. Every Artist out there deserves to have that RIGHT respected. This should be under International Law if it isn't already.

I respect Joe's right to sue ColdPlay for violating Copyright of any of his songs. This is a point of learning for all of us. Respect others property--including intellectual property. Ask permission for using what belongs to others.

When I was 3 or 4 years old, I went into a neighbors front garden and picked their flowers. Man, did I get in trouble for that!! My mom let me know in no uncertain terms that I had taken what belonged to someone else without his/her permission. She marched me up to the front door of the house, made me knock on the door and apologize to the woman who opened the door. I tearfully said I was sorry and held out my hand with the withering flowers. Fortunately, the woman had compassion on me. I LEARNED AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE THAT DAY--DON'T TAKE WHAT DOESN'T BELONG TO YOU. ASK PERMISSION AND ACCEPT THE ANSWER WHETHER "YES" OR "NO" WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT.

Maritime--Whoa, Man. You know Joe is going to be fine going through this. It will make him stronger and increase his stature in the eyes of the world. We just have to trust that justice will prevail. ;-)

Slans and Blue_Moon--Cousins? Uncle and nephew? I would like to think that..

It's time for "A Train of Angels" by you know who====Let's get on board!!

I didn't go to much efford to record it really but hey cool if u like it! but yeah he done the bass and drums and gave me the track, i just loaded it into cool edit and added about 20 guitar tracks, it was just recrded with a tone i made on the podxt, it was all recorded in less than an hour, but 4 or 5 tracks was enough to suffice but i went mad with it, there was suposed to be gaps for singing or whatever but never really done anything, but were jamin again next week and shud be recording soon

here's just the guitars if u wana hear it, i didnt even mix it, i just panned guitars and sorted volumes out, i didnt think anyone would be that interested in it, we honestly just jamed that riff a few times and kinda messed about for a bit n thats what happened

and whats wrong with rhythm! its the longest word without vowels in english or something

Tracie and Michelle--You two are shining your light on this news story about Joe taking ColdPlay to court.

You rightly say this isn't anything personal against ColdPlay. This is about WHAT IS RIGHT NOT WHO IS RIGHT.

Al--I can feel your angst. This situation will be sorted out. We just need to trust Joe and the rule of law. Love ya to bits, man!! ;-)

I'm a few days behind on posts but I thought I'd comment on the lawsuit against Coldplay.

I've made a few posts in the past saying I thought the songs were similar but that it probably wasn't worth making a big deal about it. I don't listen to pop radio, so I had never heard the song from start to finish until just a few minutes ago when I found it on YouTube. Hearing the whole thing changes my mind a bit... There are the similarities in the melody, but then it seems the tempo and the overall feel of the Coldplay song are the same as If I Could Fly as well.

I don't expect Joe to win. The case will be heard before a jury, which probably benefits Coldplay (you can live under a rock and still know Coldplay, and you can listen to radio 24/7 and not know anything about Joe Satriani). And I doubt the average juror will be able to separate melody from lyrics (I can hear a "the songs are different because Coldplay wrote words and Joe didn't" argument already). The fact that the suit was filed the day after Grammy nominations were announced won't help matters either.

I bet the timing has more to do with a response (or a lack therof) from the Coldplay camp, though. Joe seems like the kind of guy who would try to resolve something like this out of court first...I wonder if talks broke down or if he was just told "tough" after the nominations came out.

If I Could Fly sounds like one of the more personal songs Joe has written (maybe based in childhood dreams like FIABD...?), so it's gotta sting quite a bit to see that thought/feeling/idea used in another song that gets nominated for awards.

Anyway, people have a tendancy to support a winner, so I expect a jury to side with a band that has seven Grammy nominations over a gutiarist most people have never heard of.

I think Joe has a case here, but I don't think he'll win. Still, I'm glad he went to court...if nothing else it shows his willingness to stand up and protect his copyrights, which will only benefit him in the long run.

Listening to: Joe Satriani - If I Could Fly

Yeah we're all music fans but some music sucks and some artist suck and don't deserve the recognition they get. For exmaple Coldplay hardly has the talent worthy of their fame wheares Joe has some much talent and not much fame. He deserves some credit. I dont' want everyone listening to my favorite artist just because. But Joe deserves some recogition and I hope he gets it.

Nicely written Do The Stu. If I Could Fly is one of my all time Satch favorites. I don't listen to too much pop radio, so i've only heard the name Coldplay. I couldn't pick the song out if it was playing. Hi all, bz with school. One more year to go.

My take... Joe is one of the most brilliant men I've ever had the pleasure to meet. If he has a beef, it's legit.

I say, the way we should all stand behind Joe throughout this legal battle is to simply ...drink more wine.

;-)

Everybody's a winner!

If Satch fans go to the Coldplay website to bitch, that's just gonna make us look like a bunch of wankers. Leave the whining to them.

My question is... if they win a Grammy for that song, what happens if they are found guilty? OR, will the song get pulled from the Grammy's because it has legal action taken against it?

More wine I say!!!

I think Joe has a good case. Just this week, Gary Moore lost a case in a german court. A german artist who broadcast a concert live in 1974 (the concert was subsequently released on CD in 2000) claims that Moore must have heard his song "Nordrach" somehow somewhere (ie a live concert or a tape of the original radio broadcast etc etc) and ripped him off for his song "Still Got The Blues". which was released in 1990.

Gary lost based on this TAPE

Joe is lookin' good!!!! Funny though or just coincidence that Joe files the same week as the other ruling?????

I just invaded the Coldplay board.... Don't worry... I kept it nice. The first time I had heard that song, I commented to my GF that "wow, sounds like they ripped off Joe".....

Will be interesting to see what happens. Their fans are total assholes tho and are bashing Joe without knowing anything about him or listening to the U tube link where they mash the 2 songs together. Sounds awfully damn close to me.

Hope all is well with you all!

Peace out!

Hello everybody! I listened to Crystal Planet and Engines of Creation already and I'm getting ready to listen to Additional Creations.

What on Earth is going on here? The case of Joe Satriani versus Coldplay is becoming a hit here. I just heard about all this earlier today. I listened to "If I Could Fly" from ITLIS three times already and I have to say, it does sound like a little bit of Coldplay's "Viva La Vida":

The parts of the song is at the 49 second to 1 minute and 19 second mark and again at the 1 minute and 45 second mark to 2 minute and 10 second mark.

Do I think Joe has a strong case? I don't know, but it all depends on the courts. I just hope this lawsuit is put to an end ASAP and we all can move on with life.

Good luck Joe. What's important is that you are standing up for your rights and protecting your copyrights.

WHAT, no Grammy nominations for Joe. What's up with that? Coldplay has seven grammy nominations.

Do the Stu: I agree with you. I listened to If I Could Fly three times already and I am about ready to listen to it again. The song is kind of like FIABD, now that you mentioned it. Good luck to Joe. I hope things work out. How are things going with you and out West?

Igneousiceman: It is good thing you didn't invade that messageboard over there. Things will be getting way out-of-hand if I, you, or anybody did.

GoldenGirl2: How are you doing? I listened to Train of Angels and the enitre Crystal Planet album earlier today. Great album, don't you think? How are you and your husband doing? I hope things are going well.

js1200js1000: What's up? Hope you enjoy the Metallica concert. CANADA EHH!!!

Cheese101: Thank you for the sammish. Are you planning on making more? How is everyone?

SuperDaveMcCarthy: Enjoy your Crown Royal. Never had it, I am more of a wine drinker. I also like Patron. Some friends and I will go over to a bar and do a shot or two of it. It is cold here, but we are still in the double digits. I already wrapped up the Vox Satchurator and I can't wait to give it to my friend for Christmas. As for OJ Simpson, I am glad he is going to jail. He has caused enough problems already. DO ANY OF YOU ALSO AGREE WITH ME!!!

Michelle: My favorite chocolate is Dove Chocolate, and I also like DeBrand's. Their headquarters is here in Fort Wayne. Have you ever tried it? It is really, really good. I hope your husband is feeling better. I am battling a dry mouth, sore throat and cough right now, but I am doing better. How is your pop doing with his cancer treatments? Prayers to him, you, your hubby, and everyone. How cool, a children's hospital. We have one here in Indiana called Riley, which is down in Indianapolis. I have ran races and donated money to support the hospital.

Skippygirl: Glad to hear you are doing better. I might be doing a 5K Run on the 13th. Haven't decided yet (depends on work).

Blue_Moon: How are you doing my Irish friend? Hope your jamming and recording will be going well for you.

bluebuffalo: How are you doing? Good luck with school?

Satriella: How are you doing?

death cube k: Hey, how's it going? Been quite a while. Hope all is going well for ya.

Well, gotta go. Time for to make some more hot tea and some dinner. Got five days of work for this work week. YES!!! WHOO-HOO!!! Take care everybody and stay in touch. LOL.

grammys smammies. the Beatles NEVER were nominated, the stones were never nominated, zep was never nominated, SRV was never nominated. do you see a pattern here? it is about being something other than a great musician that writes great and timeless songs. jeff beck and steve vai somehow won grammys for the little seen or heard of "best instrumental", but it was hardly talked about. and what pisses me off more is when they tout some ghetto thug for making a rhyme as a new modern song writer. pffft. anger time is over, going to play my guitar now.
