Ah, Amsterdam... I went there for a week and a half with maybe a dozen other school kids back when I was in eighth grade (1997). We had pen pals over there...we stayed with them that spring and then they came and stayed with us that fall. It was pretty cool.

Trip highlights for me include seeing the Anne Frank house, our group "accidentally" walking through the Red Light District to get to a Hard Rock Cafe, and going to some amusement park somewhere. I also recall the mini-town that mikesb mentioned.

A bunch of us went and saw the movie Jerry Maguire over there...it was neat to see the movie in English with Dutch subtitles, and learning swear words in another language as a result.

gingerpants - Hi...yeah, I was posting in the early morning hours. I work as a copy editor at a newspaper and my usual hours are from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. or so. I'm generally up pretty late as a result...haha.

To answer your iPod question... Not counting live stuff, Joe has recorded more than 150 songs...about 12 hours of music.

Al Surfer - I saw Buckethead a few weeks ago. It was really cool, although it's kinda weird to see him just up there with an iPod.

Anyway, what do you think of Rush's newest album? Did you see them on the Snakes & Arrows tour at all?

maritime - Thanks for that Steve Vai video...
Glitz Man - It's weird...I look back at the past few days and it doesn't seem like I've done much of anything outside of work, but I'm also wondering where all the time is going.

Work is going OK. I've been looking around for a new job, actually, but that's not going as well as I'd like. We'll see...I don't want to say too much about it now, out of fear of maybe jinxing myself. ;-)

WhammyFreak - It's cool to see you here again...
Blue_Moon - Life in Los Angeles is...well, I don't know. I don't think I've been up to the city since you left. ;-) One thing I do know is that it's getting really cold (colder than I remember in the past at this time of year) and that seems really weird to me.

How's it feel to be home? It sounds like you're still traveling a bit here and there.

EViL DC5 - Good job with the Made Of Tears solo...do you have any other Satch videos?
Listening to: Lacuna Coil - Lacuna Coil (current song: This Is My Dream)

hey joe. i know this is really asking alot and i dont expect you to actually make this happen, not that i dont think ur a good guy its just asking alot. well with the economy and stuff my family has lost a lot of money and my dad is making a lot in his job ( he rights music for commercials) for christmas i really wanted a black js100. All i have is a fender squire and we cant spend that kind of money on a guitar right now so all i am getting for xmas is a foot pedal. its asking alot and you dont have to do this so dont think im a selfish begger that just wants free stuff, but i would be the happiest kid on earth if you could send me a black js100. i believe that when creating this account i entered my adress so it would be so so great if this could happen. i dont expect it so dont worry if this isnt possible. im not that desperate. i am a huge fan and love your work. thanks for your time joe

I love Music Radar!!! Check out the photo caption under their picture of the Time Machine pedal:

There's been no confirmation yet as to whether the Time Machine will delay your playing long enough for Coldplay to plagiarise it...

Holy crap i know what I'm telling my g/f I'm buying myself for my birthday :X a Time Machine. It's very easy to convince her to let me buy a time machine...though I'm sure she'll be disappointed that it's only an effect pedal.

and thanks for that link austin haha

The Lawsuit.

I've got twenty-plus years of experience as a trial lawyer, and, in the space of the last eight years, I've been convinced that Joe's music and his guitar work are special in a way that only comes along a few times in a century.

While I don't practice copyright law, I know enough about trial practice that it wouldn't be difficult at all to try this case. I am also at home with the creative process, as I studied it failrly intensely while attempting to be a novelist in a former life.

I'll first observe that the snippet from youtube is very compelling evidence. I think Joe is right, and I think he'll win.

But what disturbs me is what I perceive to be the strongest defense I've seen from the Coldplay crowd: The "You Stole it First" defense. There was the snippet from a Cat Stevens song (listen to it at 3:22 forward http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uUXda-RTE_c) which apparently predates "If I Could Fly" by over thirty years; and if I were the lawyer representing Coldplay, you can bet I'd be playing that tune during the trial.

I'd like to hear from others more musically adept about the differences between the two; I'd also suggest that before anyone who might be a witness in the case post anything, to please consider that you will be stuck with your words.

I wish I could work on a case where you had great forums all over the world from which to draw your research/investigation.

Nick

Hello again everyone. Well, my day off came to an end early. I got called in to work to do a banquet function. On the good side, it was my college alum that I was serving. Now I have to be at work in the morning by six. Hey, there is a charity auction on Ebay and they are auctioning off Christmas ornaments signed by celebrities. One of the ornaments is signed by Joe. Check it out. I am about to place a bid on that. Well, time for bed and be back to work in the next few hours. Keep in touch everyone (and to those who I wrote to). LOL!

Hey Satchfans!!

Does anyone out there know if Epic is going to re release Flying in a Blue Dream next year??

I think it would be fantastic if they made it a deluxe edition like they did with surfing.

What do you think?

that Cat Stevens is quite a reach. Coldplay fans are grasping at this one. It was like one chord. That happens all the time in music. The Coldplay song just really rips off the entire song. Granted they put some bells and other instruments to it, but damn. It's pretty blatent. Joe, I hope you kick their ass.

I read the article where Joe said they probably just thinkk it's some little guitar player who will just go away. It would really be a shame if they win an award for this. It could be a Milli Vanilli in the making! LOL. Give back the award!

Do the Stu - You mentioned Buckethead playing with an ipod. Did he not have a band playing with him? I have heard he's in something like 6 active bands right now. Crazy. Did he play Jordan? I like that hsong.

"You stole it first!" won't really work as a defense for Coldplay. It doesn't matter if they think Joe ripped off Cat Stevens (a weak argument, in my opinion) or the one or two other bands with similar sounding songs. If those people thought he ripped them off, he would have been sued back in 2004. Coldplay doesn't own the rights to those songs...they can't make a case on the behalf of someone else.

Plus, you can't copyright a chord progression. I posted a video on here after Joe's YouTube Live thing of a comedian making fun of how common Pachelbel's Canon in D is (that's the non-Satch song Joe played with Funtwo). The comedian plays a bunch of other songs with similar chord progressions. It's fine for music to be the same in that way when there's a different feel/tempo/melody.

The Coldplay song has a melody that's at a minimum very similar to (if not directly lifted from...I haven't written it out) If I Could Fly. That's enough for a lawsuit. The fact that the Coldplay song has a nearly identical chord progression and almost exactly the same tempo makes the similarities in the melody even more obvious, and (in my mind) means a higher probability of plagiarism.

About the only argument using other music that I can see Coldplay making would be trying to say the aspects of that song (chord progression, melody, etc.) are extremely common in popular music and have been around for hundreds of years and should be considered in the public domain.

But if that were the case, the "Joe stole it first!" people would have more than one or two videos as evidence...and we'd have music scholars citing classical works that are similar to If I Could Fly.
