Chee - As for the iPod. I just have a 4Gig nano. I find that 1. I don't need to carry all that music around. I mean really how many songs can you listen to in a day. 2. The Nanos are just flash memory. Therefore no moving part so less things to break or go wrong. Mine has even been through the washing machine. I don't recommend that though.

Ya know joe, even if the coldplay thing falls through (it most likely wont) All your fans I think agree with you... We know that viva la vida actually is If I could fly... I find it funny that coldplay fans on youtube try to argue things like " you try to find a chord progression that hasent been done" or " I hear an extra note in Joe's song its not the same!"...But to me... Same chord progression, melody AND almost the exact same time signature is a little too perfect for this to have just been a coincidence. I know how much of a down to earth and humble person you are and you most likely didn't want it to go this far but at least your fans are behind ya.

This Coldplay business really sucks man... I'm gettin' pretty upset listening to what people are saying... The grammy accusation and all, anybody who has been writing music for a while can tell you that if you boil most songs down to just melodic and harmonic content they are usually just a minute or so; maybe even a few seconds of solid musical idea... You can therefore take it and stretch it out, develop it, break it apart whatever...

But those few seconds are the "kernel" that all the rest of the song springs from... This is how a lot of us work musically, and coldplay seems to have made a "kernel" out of Joe's tune. It's sort of a case of revealing the magicians trick, he is a hack when his tricks are obvious... In this case, they made a bad call by, not just accepting the song as inspiration, but by opting to copy, the same progression AND the same melody... Secondly, they refused to reach out to Joe, two boneheaded mistakes that will hopefully cost them their street cred, give Joe more cred, and a little $$$ in his pocket for the work he did on it.

No matter what happens we ot your back Joe, hope this whole thing won't irk you much longer man.

Hi,

First of all, I'm from Belgium and with all due respect, I had never heard from Joe Satriani until the thing with Coldplay. Now honestly, I'm not really thinking very high about Coldplay. Okay, they have a few good songs but it's not really that artistically if you know what I mean.

I checked out the youtube video and I can't understand there are people who still claim they hear something 'different'. For cryin' out loud, the two songs are played over each other and you get the same chords, same tone, same notes! Duh! You must really be totally musically-handicapped not te hear its the exact same thing! So did coldplay rip you? Likely but not necessarily so. Maybe they did. Maybe they heard 'If I could fly' somewhere and the chords got into their sub-conscious or maybe it's all just a coincidence.

But who can proof he was the first to come up with the melody? That's what counts I think and Coldplay should at least open a diologue with Joe. By the way, I checked out your album 'Is there love in space' and that's some nice guitar work there dude! Wish I could play like that! There's way more soul in there than in Coldplay.

STrange how coldplay La vida gets nominations and grammy's while the original doesn't even get mentioned. Let everybody please "remember" what this says about the ones who decide about grammy's and nominations please! Bunch of fucking nitwits who've grown an attitude, thinking they are Gods defining what we ought to think is great music and what should be forgotten. Damn fools.

Joe, I'll be following your work man, you're one hell of a guitar player and I got total respect for what you do. I hope the cold-rip-players have to transfer every damn dime they made with that song to you including a penalty and interests!

Offside rule for women

In preparation for the World Cup, the "offside rule" explained for women: You're in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have.

The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses.

It would be rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes.

The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.

Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma.

She prepares to throw her purse to you.

If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes!

At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and "whilst it is in flight" you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes!

Powerslave214 - That blog post is lame. There are a lot of ill-informed opinions out there, and Coldplay has a huge fanbase so that stuff can spread pretty quickly.

But putting up with a few months of this is nothing compared to a ruling in Joe's favor that sets everything right for the future. So I'm OK with dealing with it for now... ;-)


cruss2012 - I doubt we'll see a FIABD re-release next year. SWTA was re-released, but that album has more of a meaning to Joe's career and instrumental rock in general so there was more of a reason to do it. Plus, I doubt Joe wants to be seen as predictable.
maritime - It's currently 51 F / 10.5 C here in Long Beach. It might drop by a degree or two later tonight, but that's all. This is about as cold as it gets here.
cosmic_ape - "CP fans! they are gonna make me transcribe 5 songs just to prove them wrong"

I downloaded a Guitar Pro file of Viva La Vida to use as a starting point to try to transcribe the vocal melody...and, sure enough, I couldn't find a file with the vocal part! I thought that was pretty funny...Coldplay fans say the songs aren't similar, but then that's the only response you can expect if the fans who made the Guitar Pro files didn't feel the vocal melody was worth including.


csotto08 - Hi...welcome to the site. It's too bad Satch didn't stop by St. Louis on his last tour, but it's looking likely that he'll be touring next year with Chickenfoot. Sammy Hagar LOVES St. Louis, so you can expect a show there. I'd even say two nights there would be a possibility...
cheese101 - My SanDisk Sansa View holds 16 GB worth of music...I really love music, as most of us here do, and this is more than enough space to give me plenty of variety. Click here for an old post where I talk about some of what's on my player.

The best thing to do is put all of your music on your computer and then put most of you favorite music on your MP3 player. Keep that stuff there all the time, but leave a few GB empty and move things on and off your player as your musical moods change. It only takes a few seconds, so you really don't need to spend the money for a huge player.

As I mentioned in the post I linked to, I keep complete discographies of some of my favorite bands on there, but that still leaves plenty of room for other stuff. Aerosmith's studio discography is about 15 hours of music and only takes up 1.25 GB. Satch's studio discography is about 13 hours of music and only takes up a little more than 1 GB.

if u dont use or intend to use itunes t chances are windows media player ripped ur music to wma files so you'll have to reconvert them, i just hate itunes and apple software on windows so i dont bother with it at all, which is hwy i got the zen instead

I've been a fan since I picked up my first guitar at 8 (23 years ago). I have just read the statement, Joe, you put out about the Coldplay song and I'm devastated. I think this is a big mistake that you will look back on and regret. You claim it is for Artistic integrity that you are pursuing this suit but you look like someone begging for coins. I've heard both version and it is uncanny but it's not the same song. I would ask you to go back over your own catalogue and check your music against others and you will find similarity. Big Bad Moon uses the one of the most obvious chord progressions in blues yet you don't see Mr BKing asking for money. You would have been better simply asking for a writing credit and acknoledgment if it wasn't about the money. Shame on you. I'll buy your records still and I'll buy Coldplays. I'll listen to your "If I could fly" and I'll listen to "Viva", both are great tracks. Sometimes it is best not to pursue .(ask Lars Ulrich).and be proud of your original intentions which was to create a great song for all to hear. Enjoy your new public attention but remember they won't be saying what a great guitarist they'll be saying what a bitter man out for a penny.

I think this has been an embarassing week for Joe Satriani fans.

Still love you though just pick up the guitar and do what you do best, leave the bickering for loose change to the failed musicians.

...Hey got the best driveway snowplow job in the whole town,.Yep I had to call of friend of mine hey man J.W. Hauling yeah we have been friends for about 23 years hey years ago we use to snowmobile together and when I have enough money to live on my own he,s allowed over .Now days I help him do thing,s on my computer ,well he has this pretty well brand new yamaha super duper snowmobile I diagnosisd him with clutch problem he got it checked out he needed a new seconday clutch whic was 970 dollar s so I used my connections to cycle salvage to get him a nice used one ,like not anybody is allowed to purchase a used race methon clutch it,s called but I talekd to cycle salvage they said I was allowed to have it so I said okay give it to jw jessie watt man now another friend of mine who I gave ajob to a bancroft sport and marine is fixing it for him at home privately bancroft sport and marine offered me a job well I was going to court for the tina thing so like i had to go to prison so I made up some lies why I couldnt do it and gave the job to my friend mark dunford my small engine mechani pauls brother.My mom is killing me with friend snowplowing man well I give him 15 bucks man to plow my drive way he would charge 25 or 30 everywhere else right mom told me to tell him lastnight come everytime it snows ,hey! it,s my money fouck that like 3 nice packs of fast fry porkchops everytime i get plowed and jessie is driving right by anyways so i told him I would call him you see in one way I dont need it plowed have my ski-doo but canadian mental heathl association visits plus heart prob what if need medicla attention! cmha thing real only reason for plowing anyways more coffee later wolf2.

As I am sure you are bombarded with thousands of emails I appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to read my email.

My fiancee has been a long time fan and had an extensive collection of your music. Just recently many of his CDs were stolen, including a cherished signed copy of "Is there Love in Space?". He is hoping most of the loss will be covered by insurance however the signed CD is priceless to him.

coldplay a bit more than coincidnce?..i mean vocal range is the same tempo as guitar i mean what the hell if satch does not get what is rightfuly his ...the people who decide that are "not of this earth"

this for me is a "super colossal case"-satch's song"it's so good"(if i could fly is awesome "just like lightnin'" satch has put"the meaning of love" into his guitar work ..coldplay think they can keep on "movin' on" if so i beleive there will be a massive "crowd chant" lol" satch you have my vote if they get away with this i will be "made of tears"....sorry for the satriani songs...but maybe most people will understand these titles...and that satch does not just accuse..they have a pretty big story and meaning with them
