Hey, Joe (can I call you Joe?)

Music geekery ahead...

Earlier this year (April 4) you did a show as part of your Guitar Center Sessions at the Rockville, MD store. You may NOT remember me as the skinny guy who was with the big guy who brought his Chromeboy to the gig that you DO remember. (Did that make any sense?)

Anyway, I have a question. On a classical forum where I regularly post, your name came up. Being a classical forum, one member decried anything involving the electric guitar as "worthless junk" devoid of "artistic interest," to which I strongly disagreed and posted links to a couple of videos where you discuss the pitch axis theory. He suggested that if I wanted to find "real" artistic interest, try listening to the quartets of Bela Bartok (which I already knew and enjoyed.)

Now, I found his mention of Bartok interesting, because Bartok pioneered a compositional technique that he called "polymodal chromaticism," which appears quite similar to pitch axis theory. On further research, I discovered that in 1973, a musicologist named Erno Lendvai had developed an analytical system that he called the "axis system," based again on studies of - guess who? - Bartok.

2 + 2 = 4, right? The similarity of pitch axis theory with polymodal chromaticism, and the similar use of the word "axis" led to my response:

(http://www.talkclassical.com/2824-metal-music-death-metal-7.html#post34467) Link to my final response at talkclassical.com

My question is this: Are you familiar with these theories? and did they influence the formation of your pitch axis theory?

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond here (even if you don't get to my long-winded @$$). It's great that a musician of your talent and stature makes himself accessible to the fans.

Regards, - Wil

FabLawyer of SBM welcome to Arkansas, nice of your to join us here, and I'm with you on Joe coming to Arkansas to play, we need him and Steve to drop in and Jam with us.

As for the satchurator pedal, I can believe the volume issues. Joe likes to play at volumes lower than alot of other artist, so I'm guessing thats why the volume is low because its custom to his taste.

Merry Christmas to all and Rock your Axemas if ya got 'em Chris @ OME MUSIC

DTS, let's just say that I am taking the time to analyze two major singles out of the last four CP albums and I have found a common thread within those tracks... some sort of work horse resource these guys use to craft their songs that is not present on VLV... I'm no musicologist, but if I'm right, "access" does not need to be proven, IMO...

Merry Christmas everyone. I am hoping that this issue with Cold Play is resolved soon. When I heard it I knew immediately that they had ripped off Joe. I have been able to see him live twice and hope to again. I would appreciate it if someone would keep me up to date on new CD's and videos. I have all but one.

Mr Satriani. First I hope your cat is doing better. We lost our family companion a few years ago, so I understand the struggle. I have joined this forum for only one reason. I love music. It has been a part of who I am all my life. As for you, there is no question that your talent has left an indelible mark, not only on the music world, but for all future shredders who seek the passion. What I am about to write is not going to be popular...about the ColdPlay "thing". Sir, music is here to bring us together. You have a chance to rise above the rhetoric and shpw music's true power. My suggestion...Play with ColdPlay on the Grammy's. By this act of forgiveness, you can bring things together ...for good. Music's bigger than all of us. No accusations, no explanations, just an act of kindess and musician's brotherhood. Like I said, not likely popular...just a request from another long-time musician. Either way...peace to you.

Hello beery, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly sinking Left its seeds while I was drinking And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the bounds of swerving.

I'm restless and I'm taliking to myself As I grab another beer from off the shelf 'Neath the halo of the kitchen light My jaw is slack, my eyes are bright When my legs turned to jelly, and I feared i'd fall To the floor I sat and listened to the sound of silence
