Maritime--Have you gone mad???

Smoking to get your lungs used to what? Black crud, crappy sludge? As far as I'm concerned you are slowly committing suicide, my friend!!

DON'T DO IT! DON'T DO IT! DON'T DO IT! MAN, I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE--I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE DIE FROM THE EFFECTS OF SMOKING AND IT AIN'T PRETTY MY FRIEND!

My Mother-in-law died a horrible death 4 months after Steve and I were married! How do you think I felt about that?

Another reason why I love T2J: It's hard for trolls to keep up with things for more than a post or two. :-)

Anyway...here's a list of songs I used to try to turn on a co-worker to Satch. I think she listened to most of 'em, but I don't think it stuck. Oh well...

Friends
Baroque
Secret Prayer
Love Thing
Rubina
Banana Mango II
Memories
Flavor Crystal 7
Bamboo
I Believe
The Souls Of Distortion
Flying In A Blue Dream
Musterion

anibur - The A Tale Of Rock video was really cool...I love the fire-breathing headstock.
Railton - Congrats on getting a JS1200!

If Joe wins the lawsuit, damages will likely be paid retroactively. For him to have a shot at being awarded a Grammy (if the song even wins), though, he'd need to be suing for a songwriting credit...and I don't think he is.

I'm not sure why he's only seeking money...my guess would be if he wins in court, he'll be awarded a big enough percentage of the song's profits that it just won't be worth it for Coldplay to do anything with that song in the future. The Coldplay song would essentially disappear and the melody will be Joe's again, in If I Could Fly.

I don't know, though...

Igneousiceman - You mentioned you were listening to the Killers...have you heard their new album, Day & Age, at all? I love Hot Fuss but I think Sam's Town is horrible...I don't know whether I should give D&A a shot.
punkdude75 - You might be able to find old Satch tour shirts through Fanfire.
andy of uk - You can also use the <br> tag (but with the [] brackets instead) to make a single-spaced post, like my list above...

And THANK YOU for the PDFs of the court filing. I was going to try to dig those up but it looks like he beat me to it. Sweet...

lorenzo001 / novjul - Time Machine was one of the first JS albums I bought as well...there's such a variety of music there, and it's still fun to listen to even now.
cosmic_ape - I say still go ahead and post a video with any similarities you've found...even if you don't use their actual song in it. We've all heard it and know where we can find it. I'd like to see what you came up with...
Blue_Moon - I haven't yet read it all the way through, but I've seen plenty of court filings and I have no reason to doubt the legitimacy of this one. I know you're sick of hearing about this, but I'm just saying...
mapjevi - Welcome to the site!

Al....I have thought about having a smoke (almost) every day since I quit. And there were days when I would have cracked under the pressure if someone would have waved one in my face. Nowadays my only vices are an occasional beer & whiskey......and an occasional "puff"...ahem...who said that?

One of my proudest moments was when I converted three people in a matter of minutes after playing FIABD back in 1992.

I think it's pretty funny someone would actually put a post on Joe's sight calling him an old fart! The energy and enthusiasm that Joe puts into a show night after night, along with the traveling...old fart. Ahhh...some people just don't have a clue. I know the posts have run rampant on this issue, but you just can't believe that Joe would file silly lawsuits! Like "the old fart" has time for all that. I think he's kind of busy wrapping up a great tour and getting ready to get a DVD put out, and oh ya...there's that whole Chickenfoot thing! Why not just find some extra time in the day to go sue someone! LOL. BTW, that "old fart" is going to be in the history books as one of the most influential and greatest guitar players in history. Coldplay certainly draws some crowds and are a good group in their own right, but I don't think you're ever going to put them into the books as one of the most influential bands in history. Not bad for some old fart filing silly lawsuits, trying to make a name for himself! Aaaaaahahahahahahahaha. Oh, I'm now wiping the tears.

Dear Joe,

I want to write to you regarding the "Viva La Vida" and "If I Could Fly" lawsuit that is happening between you and the band Coldplay. I want you to that I have been a fan of your music for a good many years now. I have had the pleasure to see you twice in concert. Once with G3 in, and again on your own tour. Both were amazing.

I write to you as a fan of your work, your music, and your dedication to being a viruoso guitar player, and not a fan in anyway of Coldplays.

But I have to say, that this action for me, is a straw that broke the camels back.

Yes, I can understand that it might be disheartening to hear a song that has a riff or a line that sounds very similar if not exactly like something you have created. I listened to both songs side by side, and the similarity is without a doubt there. But to cause such a fuss, and sue simply because of that reason is absurd.

Your argument essentially states that only you in the entire known world can come up with that arrangement of notes and that no one else is originally capable of doing the same feat.

Not only that, but only one person in existence can lay claim to that arrangement and no one else may make use of it even if they so happened to come up with something original with it.

Which is not the same argument as sampling a piece of music.

It is fortunate for all of us, including yourself that the early blues masters did not follow the same suite or else we would have to get someones permission to play a song that used a 1,4,5 progression or even worse a 12 barre blues line.

Of course this is simple music, and your music is much more complex. Never the less, the argument is still there, and for a standard to be kept the most minimal of examples must be used.

Youtube is inundated with songs that "sound the same", and clearly many of them do. However being a musician myself, and I use that term very loosely in your company, i understand that there is only so many things that you can do with 12 notes in a scale.

As a long time fan of your music, I myself periodically find that in my jam sessions I might use a technique or a line that I subconsciously picked up from listening to you, or Vai, or Morello, or Buckethead, and not even know it or be aware of it.

It's not plagiarism its paying homage to your heroes.

In my very limited ability, I myself have found that I too was once in a position of creating an arpeggio that sounded exactly like something that Petrucci had come up. Interestingly enough I had never listened to Dream Theatre before, only knew Petrucci by name, and didn't think much about it. It was a musing on my guitar. A year later I happened to listen to a Dream Theater album and sure enough, there it was. Same key and all! Now how is it possible that some random guy with a guitar was able to come up with the same thing that a Juliard trained master was able to come up with?

Do I abandon the song that I had spent a year on because someone else recorded the same 12 notes in the same pattern that I had before I had even heard of them? No, my song is my own, and Dream Theatres is their own.

It almost makes me scared to pick up an instrument for fear of getting sued because something I might make might sound like something else.

I understand that all of your songs have great meaning to you, and I respect that, however another master at their craft whom I know personally summed it up this way "fine, steal my ideas, tomorrow I will come up with something better".

Joe, I am sad to say that because of this, I can no longer in good conscious be a fan, your action is a symptom of a greater problem that lies in the recording industry. A problem that names like NIN, Radiohead and many others recognize. It is the reason for Creative Commons, and Copyleft music. I can't support you, or endorse your music to people who have never heard it before.

Thanks for the all the years of inspiring music-Q.G

Igneousiceman.... Hey, Thanks for the comments. Much appreciated. Julia is a song about Riche's little neighbor. Inspiration comes from anywhere. We play this song live and goes over pretty well. When I first heard it you can't escape the Steely Dan influence. Anyway, I'm glad you like the songs and the pics. Did you get a chance to check out the covers? Those were recorded and mixed in my studio. I thought they came out pretty good. Thanks again......
