Geez, does any band have more grief than Lynyrd Skynyrd? Billy Powell, their superb piano player, passed away today RIP Billy......
"JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Billy Powell, the original keyboard player with the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, died early Wednesday at his Orange Park home.
Powell was 56.
Orange Park police said Powell called 911 just before 1 a.m. complaining of difficulty breathing. Paramedics found him in his bedroom responsive.
Ross Schilling, a publicist with Vector Management, said they believe Powell suffered a heart attack, but an autopsy will be conducted to determine his cause of death.
Orange Park police told Channel 4 Powell had an appointment with his cardiologist on Tuesday, but he did not go.
Powell moved to Jacksonville as a child and attended Bishop Kenny High School, where he met Leon Wilkenson, future bass player for Skynyrd. He originally joined the band in the early '70s as a roadie. Before a gig playing at the The Bolles School prom, he sat down at the piano and impressed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant enough to be invited to join the band as its keyboard player.
Skynyrd went on to sign a national recording contract and become the best-selling southern rock band in history.
In 1977, Van Zant, along with guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister, and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, were killed when the band's chartered plane crashed in Mississippi.
Powell suffered facial injuries in the crash, but eventually recovered. He was the only band member well enough to attend the funerals of those killed in the crash.
In 1987, Powell rejoined Skynyrd for a tribute tour and has toured with the band ever since. He and guitarist Gary Rossington were the only two original band members who continued to record and tour with the band.
Skynyrd's public relations firm announced that concerts planned Friday in Louisiana and Saturday in Mississippi were cancelled due to Powell's death. Those shows were to be rescheduled in the near future.
Powell is survived by his son, Richard, who was at the family home early Wednesday morning."

first of all, sad to hear about billy powell - makes me wish i had spent my last dime to buy 2 tickets and take my uncle to their show here in minnesota while i had the chance last summer. RIP brother.
secondly, i'm not sure if this is total taboo to talk about or if my post will get deleted - but i just read that CP could've paid joe off and the world wouldn't be the wiser. there's something about that statement that is bugging me. i don't know what the latest is on this case, there doesn't seem to be any new info regarding this after about the middle of december - is it just done? or are we merely waiting for a case to play itself out? if there was a payoff and the world isn't the wiser, then that's just it, "the world isn't any wiser!"
joe, i've been a life long fan of yours, and a very selective, limited fan of CP - i sorta hear the similarities, but the overall flavor of the 2 bands songs are decisively different, i can't support the decision to follow through with this UNLESS there are solid definitive results - regardless of what they are, i think the world needs to know it.
just my 2 cents, 'bout all i got anyway. stay kool joe.

Maritime--You are so funny, man! Did I shower? lmao! Even with the drought in Cali, people here take showers including yours truly!
Cali is in serious trouble, people. This 2/3 majority vote for passing a budget has got to go the way of the dinosaur. No more roadblocks when dealing with the people's money. We may as well be held hostage by our legislators!
Ibanez_god---I love "House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals! I have loved it since I was a young girl! That Rickenbacher guitar rocks! I love those chords every last one of them. Want to learn--another student and teacher jam!
Michelle--your weather looks brutal--hope this Groundhog Day brings some sunny weather to you for a least a day. Do you think Al McKenna is working on that song, "F On" in the key of F? I hope so--such a gift of composition must be expressed!
Tracie--Would you please send some more rain down to Cali? We need to fill those reservoirs to the max. A fiscal crisis is bad enough! We don't need another dry season of fire storms! Thank you for your generous posts on this forum--generous like your "brother" Joe!
Cheers, brothers and sisters of T2J!!

Joe--My curiousity about you is boundless. Everything I have learned about you so far--what you say in interviews, what Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Morse or any other musician says about you is so amazing, inspiring and enriching. I want to play my guitar every day with all my heart and learn, learn, learn--give and receive! Ry Kihn does you proud!
Your love/generousity is palpable and I am thankful!

I posted some videos of me playing Satch songs. I used the backtracks that Maritime gave the link for (thanks Maritime). but they are only viewable to people on my friends list. And I can only record up to 2 minutes of video :'( so anyways There's: Crushing day, If I could Fly, There was Super Colossal (but I noticed a HUGE error and deleted it) Crystal Planet, Revelation and I just uploaded Ten Words. But I can only record the first 2 minutes of each song, so that sucks. anyways if you want to see them, you have to be my friend on facebook. Matt Schoenbeck, got a picture of me playing guitar and doing the Satch Scream. add me and tell me who you are so I don't delete you.

and If you do see the videos I kinda messed up on Crushing day, nothing major, my finger slipped and made a weird note, and in If I Could Fly one note didn't ring out the way it was supposed to, but other wise they are just my slightly modified versions of the songs ENJOY!
Oh and for Revelation I didn't have any Tabs so I tried to go by ear and I think it's right.

Cube, I'm thinking Al is over in Germany making part II of this vid. That's what I'm thinking anyways...
Skippygirl, thousands of homes here in the states with no power due to the ice storm that just blew through. Kansas got hit hard! It sucks to be that hot or that cold. Rafa - ohh-la-la!
GGirl, Al is working on a song, but it's the one I posted to Cube above. lol!
I spent the last 7 hours or so on the sofa with a bitchin' sinus headache. It feels like somebody is standing on my face with a high heel digging in right above my left eye. Some ppl never get headaches. I think I get their share :- /
Ahh well, I prefer a headache over being giddy in the belly any day.
OH, some good news before I go to bed - my pop has been "dismissed" by 2 of his doctor's, and won't be needing another round of chemo like they thought he would. His scans and blood work came back pretty good, so for now he's good to go. The other doctors told him they'll check him again in a year, and the doc he saw on Tuesday said he'll check him again in 3 months. YAY!

@mikesb: thanks for the heads up on Billy Powell. Tomorrow will be a Skynyrd day at my place as a sign of respect.
Think I'll give Simple Man and Tuesday's Gone a spin for my nightcap.
RIP BP and thanks for the music.

Michelle - oooh sounds ugly - at least if your power goes out here in a heatwave you go to the pool or the beach, if it's cold it's bloody hard to warm up unless you light a fire or go out and ski.
Dang it's hot tho - I have to keep re-tuning the guitar to practice.

So I have a question for anybody about writing solos. Ok, I have played guitar for 3 years and can cover a variety of songs and wrote a couple of my own. I have written solos and they are good but I don't understand how you can switch keys within soloing. Anytime I try to make a switch from one key to another it just doesn't sound right. I can only play in one key at a time (E, D, G, and A being my favorite) Please help me understand how to solo better.
