Ah...I did a lot of cleaning this morning. It's a lot of work, but it feels good...

jayant_doraiburu - A guitar can have either a 24th fret or a sweet-sounding neck pickup positioned right where the 24th fret would be, but not both. I guess Vai wanted the fret and Satch wanted the pickup. It's not the end of the world, just get used to bending the note at the 22nd fret up a whole step.
ibanez_god - Haha...I don't MISS the TMNT movies because I have all three of the live-action films on DVD. I still watch them every now and then, too...I love that stuff. :-)
maritime - Cool link...thanks for sharing that. The results bug me a bit because the things that are the prettiest aren't necessarily the things we can learn the most from. I think the two planetary nebulas should be studied, but of course they look ugly so they're in 5th and 6th place. Oh well...
Blue_Moon - "Just don't like U2, just cause im from the same country means i gotta like em! "

Britney Spears and I were both born in Louisiana, but I don't have to like her. In fact, I'm quite vocal about not liking her. ;-)

Satriella - Awesome photos...thanks for sharing.

Hey Joe, thanks for the on line lessons. I've been playing for years but with two kids- full time job etc it's hard to keep up with my chops. I appreciate the insight and know how. Keep up the great work. And as always, thanks for making such great music. ( strange but beautiful ) Talk to you later.

Pongo 1

P.S. When you get a chance come back to Madison Wi so I can see you live again.

Glitzman, sorry I am nowhere near Wimbledon. I am north London, Hertfordshire, just a bit East , probably about 70 miles away.

I can recommend a good book to ya though! My other half picked up a copy of 'Serious' by John McEnroe in the summer, but never read it. I picked it up out of boredom (on holiday), & LOVED it...LOL (I do not like tennis at all!). So there ya go! I suppose being as it's an autobiography it's a bit like being a bit nosey!!

Hi,

To answer the questions some of you asked me. My debut album is almost finished. It'll be out in late April '09. Until then, I really can't put anything up online. The guitar I love and use is a Reverend Flatroc. I also have a custom-made (or rather custom-enhanced) guitar I call the Tremolo guitar. I've been borrowing high-quality amps (Vox, Two-Rock, etc.) up until now from my local independent guitar shop, and other local musicians, but if it sounds decent I'm going to pick up one of those purple Marshall half-stacks that are on special at a major guitar chain store. I'm not big on pedals at all, but I do have an octave pedal (Octavia). I prefer the natural distortion you get from putting the knobs at 10 (or 11).

It's hard to say how long I've been doing instrumental rock. When my record comes out I'll have websites, blogs, and other stuff with biographical data.

Coldplay admitted plagerism

"We're one of the world's worst—but most enthusiastic—plagiarists as a band. We'll try and copy anything but tend to fail, so we come up with something...that sounds like us—only through trying to sound like somebody else."

Mckenna, of course I know where Cape Town is without googling it...it's up yer Irish arse :) AND I'm betting it's like.....summer there, right? ;) I loooooove uuuuuuuuu......

FO42958....actually, I think you're being a tad overly-sensitive re: the Coldplay bashing on this particular site. If you read back over the posts since this broke in the news, you will find some derogatory posts, to be sure....but no where NEAR the amount of nasty ones that you can find over on the Coldplay posting board. I've been following the threads over there and it's awful and painful to see what everyone has to say about Joe. I don't want to see either of them put down. Joe is doing what he has to do to protect his musical integrity and his art, and Coldplay is responding how they feel they need to. I know personally that Joe is a wonderful and kind person. And can only guess about Coldplay members but suppose they are too. Again I say...leave it to the legal-eagles to sort it all out. There's no need to resort to name-calling no matter who you love and support. Most arguments have valid points on both sides, if people are willing to be mature enough to consider that fact. Only time will tell.

Meanwhile...this IS Joe's house. We love him here. And there's plenty of other stuff to talk about besides this court case that none of us have any say in, or control over. Believe it or not, we even talk about other bands here :)

Which btw, did everyone hear that Dream Theater are in the studio working on their next album? They hope to release it early summer with an immediate world tour to support it to follow. Good news I say...between DT, the new Paris DVD and new Chickenfoot album and tour....oooooohhh yeah baby!!

T-Bones, Joe is a hairy Italian, and I don't know about you, but I don't wanna see none of that in a string bikini! lmao! With or without manscaping! Equally as disturbing is seeing Mc's lilly white Irish ass in a thong! I don't wanna see ANY guy in a thong ffs! Let's just stick to bigger britches that not only cover the meat and potatoes, but the back of the house too. Please & thanks.

lmao!!

I think we've gone to far!

okay well, I'm confused but what's new.

In THIS vid of New Last Jam (posted it earlier)....

Joe plays on a double-neck guitar obviously...but I'm wondering why the double neck? Mc 'splained to me that one was standard tuning, one was open tuning and Joe says the top neck is all tuned to E which would be the open tuning...I get that okay...but what I don't understand is why? When I listened to this at 1:12 with Joe using the top neck, and then compare it to 4:02 with him using the bottom neck...they sound the same to me....? I'm no player at all, so I'm sure I'm missing something crucial here as to why, lol....

But why the double neck...and I was also wondering if Joe has used a double neck guitar on any other songs besides New Last Jam?

Love the song...I'm just...curious, lol :) I'll shadap now.

Hey, guys is Carla that attractive? Did you see her on the David Letterman show? He was so nervous, he was stuttering! Yikes!

Next thing you know she'll be on stage with Joe and Sammy Hager and they will be melting at her feet!

maritime - LMAO I wasn't thinkin' the Johnny Cash sorta sexy....... Good grief that guy with the Line6 pod lost me after 20 sec and then doesn't even starting playing until the 8:00 mark - (and then it sounded pretty good) - is that what you do too?

Michelle - I guess that makes you a Fender too? And thanks for the New Last Jam vid, how about a mankini for Joe and ChickenPA?

Satriella - lovely pics!

ibanez-god - thnx, bit excited about getting the geetar, hope to improve outa sight with a better geetar - I have the Hal Leonard book now too.

Glitzy - you legend, sounds like a great result!! Can I, ahem, attribute any of the great performance to a little NLP brain training?

FO42958 - where we come from we call it back-pedalling big time ;0)

Cheese - nicely done the last point.

SuperDave - great effort on learning all those songs! Wish I coudl learn 1 that sounded alright. Any pics of the band?

cheese,
in that vid there's a difference... first, it's not an E open tuning... an open tuning is when you tune your guitar in a way that when you strum all six strings at the same time, you get the sound of a certain chord... blues slide players do this a lot, keith richards is very famous for it, acoustic guitarists do it, etc...
what JOE did is he tuned every string to the same pitch: E, he just did it in three different octaves... He probably used two high E strings, two D strings tuned up to E, and to low E strings (he might have used different gauges) to get something like this:

6. low E
5. low E
4. medium E
4. medium E
2. high E
1. high E

So, there is no chord implied in that tuning. The tuning would have to have at least tow or three fundamental pitches to imply a chord and therefore be considered an open tuning...
An "E open tuning" would imply an E major chord and it would go something like this (starting on the sixth string): EBEG#BE,
while JOE's tuning goes like this: EEEEEE

The effect he gets with this crazy tuning is that what he is playing sounds big, it's like having two or three dudes playing the same melody at the same time... You can see that he is barring his index finger against the strings and playing the melody in more than one string at a time...

He switches to the other fretboard (in standard tuning) for most of the soloing... the reason why you don't hear that much of a difference is because JOE might have figured out playing the rest of the song on the other neck might come off as "thinner sounding", so when he switches to the lower neck he also plays parts of the melody in octaves... The melody might be the same, but the articulations and dynamics he gives to both approaches are different...

And that's why Yngwie said Joe Satriani is THE MAN...
