Hi, This question is for Joe or anyone else here who has some experience in the music business.

Being a new-comer, and basically unknown at this point, should I really start my own music publishing company, or should I sign-up with a well-estsblished publishing company which has "contacts"?

I do instrumental rock. I'm thinking if I sign with a publishing house they can maybe get me more exposure in the form of commericals, video games, background music on T.V. shows, etc. But does this mean that every time I go and perform these songs publicly I have to give them a percentage of the money, being that they own the copyright?

Help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Al McKenna--Yesh! You made it very clear about how you very much dislike U2. Gotta say, I like Eddie Money, too! Enjoy his music more everytime I give it a listen! Great songs!

Hi Maritme--Welcome back to this place of rants, raves and admonishments! You and Al sure don't like U2. Bono and the guys would break down and cry if they knew what you were saying about them. ;-(

Speaking of crying, I'm back at it again, only this time at work. I'm shelving books, tears running down my face and bein' stubborn as hell about just getting that book truck emptied and all the books in their order on the shelves! Bloody hell! I've never been so determined to get me work done and leave on time than yesterday! And the library was a mob scene! Saturdays and Sundays everyone and his/her cousin shows up and needs a book, vid, CD, DVD, or books on MP3 or CD! Job security is great--breakdowns are effing hell. Kids and adults were lookin' at me puzzled, but I don't care! When I got home I listened to Steve Vai's PASSION AND WARFARE and Joe's PSATMOR--so calming and soothing! I am the emotionally challenged one--although not the only human on the planet in this case.

Why does Joe's Signature guitars don't have 24 frets? I had to buy Steve Vai's model because of that. Did not had that much money so bought the cheapest one Jem Jr. and know what was stuck with bad pickups Changing it with Di marzio pickups now

Was looking at that Youtube video again of Satch Seems Funtwo was too scared to get near Joe during the show Was also looking at the BackStage videos Will.I.Am was shaking his head during the guitar duo

I play so many songs of Joe at my School that now I'm called Joe by most of the guys especially after i got bald (I do have hair now) but sadly In India Joe is not very popular Bryan Adams and Iron Maiden is. He did a concert at Calcutta sadly less people were there...and out of excitement everybody broke the baricades and they seemed to be even lesser after getting compact. He should have done it in Delhi or Bombay....but still i don't know how popular he is there too.

Currently I'm working on Guitar Antics One of them is throwing the guitar in the air and catching it while somersalting i wonder if i'll even be able to do it The others are throwing the guitar and catching it simple ones

KtzA - Welcome back!

Sporlan8 - I've never recorded my own music, but as a fan I've come across several musicians who have said the biggest mistake they made was not retaining control of their publishing.

It's a tough decision...if you keep the rights to yourself you'll have total control but no one will hear you. If you give them away you might become popular, but you wouldn't be making any money. I guess if you're optimistic you'd keep the rights to yourself, knowing that your music is good enough and will eventually do things for you.

I don't know what publishing companies you're looking at, but if you find one that lets you give some music to them while continuing to publish other stuff on your own, that might work. You'd lose a song or three, but maybe that'd be enough exposure to get people into your other music.

ibanez_god - Ah...

"Well, that was easy.
Yeah, a little too easy.
Look! It's Raph.
Yeah, a little too Raph."

TMNT rules...I'm such a nerd...

Sporlan8- post some of your songs, all of us would love to hear it, especially instrumental rock. I don't have the experience to answer your question but I would say, if you play gigs or anything like that where your own company could catch I would go with that, but otherwise there is a good chance of expanding with a wellknown company. see what Joe says. and also what guitar and equipment do you use?

Maritime--Nothing like a goofy confession post! Thanks. Also thanks for the Hubble telescope info. Amazing images of the universe! Those planetary astronomers and astro-physicists are on multiple missions this year and taking advantage of the International community of astronomers for viewing down-under as well as at the higher elevations in the northern hemisphere! Laurance Doyle, have the time of your life! (Oh, uhhm....he's the graduate from the University of Heidelburg who went to undergraduate school at San Diego State U with my older sister!) He now lives in Menlo Park and works for SETI in Mountain View, CALI! of course!

Mr. McKenna--How can you be so cruel? What would happen if you met Bono and the Edge and told them their music is shite and eff off and they backed off and looked at each other and started crying because you hurt their feelings? Geezz Luezzze!! What a way to win friends and influence people!!

Tracie and Michelle--I'm at a loss here....I may as well pack my bags and take a leave! Why does Mr. McKenna have to be sooo mean? What happens if U2 breaks up because Al McKenna hates them? All their fans would put on sackcloth and ashes and mourn for a whole year or more! LOL!!

satch, so are u thinking about a new G3 tour for 2009, this would be a killer line-up with gary hoey as the opener, then steve vai as the main liner to get everyone movin, then BAM comes joe the ultimate headliner opening his set with my most favorite satch song of all time ICE 9. dude i seen you for the first time in cleveland this year and i was totally blown away, i wanted to see you about 8 years ago in pittsburgh on a g3 tour but im a truck driver and was not able to get home for the show, so i was anxiously waiting and when i got there there was me my (cuz) who taught me how to play back in 88 along with this son who we all help out, and then there was bill my cuz's teacher form back in the late 70's so there was literetly like 3 teachers of blues in one car going to see one of the best guitarists of all time. the single most memory in music in my life other thas going to see les paul perform at the hall of fame in cleveland with my cuz and got to shake his hand. those were my most memorable concerts ever and i seen alot of shows. thanks, shawn in ohio

Al, I don't care about the signature model... I care about a good guitar, with good pickups, good neck, with a piezo pickup and just overall good quality... What was the last time you bought a guitar with those features? That's all I'm saying... I'd buy a 7 string JP in a heart beat...

Just don't like U2, just cause im from the same country means i gotta like em!

but i do like enya alrite, who doesn't!!?

and ive never played a guitar as comfortable as my strat that i have, its the best guitar for me at the moment, my ibanez rg just makes it hard to play the instrument, even though it was about 10 times more the cost... good quality doesn't necessary mean good playability with a good feel i guess!

This is good, give it a few minutes to get going though: Pib and Pog.
ibanez_god: '...fortunately I own both...' You just made a lot of people very jealous...:)
And since we're on the subject. I own 2 guitars and a bass. Both of which can be seen here. I must say, I tried out a £1300 Musicman whilst looking for the most recent purchase and thought the RG sounded better. I would still kill (well, maim) for a genuine 60's Strat. Keep on dreaming eh?
