The problem with guitar these days is competition.Shouldnt it be about composition?I mean if a guitarist could dazzle me with 6 billion notes a minute i,d put him in a circus

When i pray will guitarists look beyond technique n get down t creating great music

@GG2: Also, I haven't heard of Porcupine Tree. I'll have to look them up.
Oh boy! Get yourself a copy of 'Fear of a Blank Planet', turn the lights down, turn the volume up and immerse yourself in the coolness. 'In Absentia' has some great tracks too but I say try FOABP first.

@CommodoreDrake: I wouldn't get the best acoustic you can afford just yet but do go for an instrument that is at least half decent. A cheap instrument might well put you off for life. Something from the likes of Yamaha that costs around $500 should be pretty fine. Try to get the store to set it up for you. It might add a bit to the bill but if their repairs guy is any good it'll be worth it. Also, don't rule out a good second-hand instrument either. I bought a s/h Takamine from a pro player. It's fantastic. Cost me half the price of a new one. Money very well spent. I don't mind the few dings and scratches; it means I don't have to be precious about it and I can leave it out on a stand ready for picking up at any time. A good hard case is def. worth it if you want to take your guitar around with you. Accidents happen all too frequently with acoustics in gig bags. Don't learn the hard way, get a hard case! :o)

Wow lots of great info. Now another question, everyone seems to be talking about acoustic vs. electric, but what about steel guitars. I love the sound of those as well. Probably won't start in that area but it'd be cool to eventually get there.

Looking at the prices ya'll have quoted I'm probably going to have to go with a second hand which is fine. I just don't really have the money to go new. I'm in the process of starting a new business so that tends to suck up quite a bit of my disposable income. Five years at it so far and still not making any type of money... well that's a lie made four hundred in profit this year but that all goes right back in.

So I looked at used online and realized I need to figure out what size I need... so apparently it's first to a music store to see what size I need and then to look for a second hand.

ibanez_god, I got my first Ibanez ONLINE from a franchise guitar store... the second time around I went with a mom and pop lil' shop and they hooked me up... this was also online... That's what you get when you are left handed... the first time I didn't know any better, now I'd like to think it's different...

I am still forced to buy online, as the best guitars I've found are in shops located in the NY area... the funny part, they're built here in Southern California... Go figure!

CommodoreDrake if your getting an acoustic, get something with at least a solid top as that is the main sound board.. you can get a takamine G seiries for around the $300 range with a solid top.. you can get a real nice canadian made simon and patrick acoustic with solid top for about $425 or so . or a taylor 114 t for under $800 .. let us know what you get ..also try to get some light strings put on, as that will help you play easier

Al McKenna--Why is Ireland so...so...Roman Catholic? Don't they accept freedom of all kinds of religions? I can't figure that out. What does it matter if you visit a priest or a vicar? I don't like the attitude toward diversity and my brother/friend and his lifestyle (why would anyone choose that lifestyle?) I think he and his domestic partner should be able to get married if they want to. He's a great guy and I should know 'cause we met in high school and we were the best of friends. People can be so weird about these things. I mean peoples sex lives are very complex and some people don't want to admit it.

To all the guitar players- Dumb Question #22 -

I started on the A pentatonic and was using the same approach as chords i.e. arched fingers so as not to touch other strings etc but then I went back to the vids of PipSatrini (daddy long legs fingers) and Blue Moony and Joe I noticed that they actually keep their fingers quite straightish and parallel to the finger board and just tap the end of their fingers on each string - so my question is does it not matter that you might touch the other strings (since you are only picking one) or are you somehow not touching them at all?

2nd part of Dumb Question - is it better technique to only have 1 finger on 1 string at a time or is it OK to keep a string depressed if your next note is not affected i.e. playing F on the 1st string then G can I leave the F depressed - it's easier.

Cheers in advance.

Slansh : i share your statement about competition polluting composition.

But as you know, competition is an easier way than composition. & people do what they are able to do.

Edit : i just would like to add that if, across this democratic competition, a musician bets onto composition, how many luck does he get to be heard?

Very few.

& there's lot of musicians who bet onto composition.

That's one of the big democratic paradox.

SkippyGirl, first part, it has to do with two things:

At first you need to over emphasize the fretting in order to get it right and avoid injuries due to awkward positioning. On top of that, your fingers need to loosen up and get used to the guitar related motions (they're muscles and you need to build them up like an athlete)... Once you reach that stage, you will find that you don't need to move your fingers as much in order to get places... your fingers will have gained some skill around the fretboard and you will find that you can optimize your fretting with less finger movement...

number 2. what you have seen is these guys playing pentatonic scales, right? well, the basic pentatonic box has your index finger fretting one note on each string, at the same fret. This means that you can almost barre your fingers across that fret almost as if you were playing an F chord, for example(not quite across the whole set of strings, but two or three at a time)...
On top of that, pentatonics call for blues and blues calls for string bending, so your hand needs to be on a certain angle in order for it to able to bend strings effectively... And, if you must know, these guys probably had some kind of distortion going on, so that's another issue...
Once you play guitar with some sort of gain on your signal, you have to adapt your technique to the point that if you strum across the only note(s) you will hear is/are the one(s) you meant to play. Everything else needs to be muted or it will sound like crap... This is not so important when playing acoustic and too much to think of when you're just getting started...

Hope that helps...

Cosmic Ape - Aha!!! (slaps forehead) that makes sense, thanks for that detailed description I appreciate it. I was watching Pip play Extremist and it's ike a spider crawling over the frets so you can see the economy of finger movement - maybe in a year or so I'll nail it.

Will be heading to guitar lessons soon, have to wait for the stars to align.......

edit - thanks ibanez-god, too.

to answer the 2nd part of your question(and you thought I had forgotten!)...

is it better technique to only have 1 finger on 1 string at a time or is it OK to keep a string depressed if your next note is not affected i.e. playing F on the 1st string then G can I leave the F depressed - it's easier.

well, that answer has two parts also:
1. It depends on where you're going. In order to play through the song changes without falling behind on the tempo you have to learn to anticipate your next movement. It's like when you are driving, you don't stare at the road that is right in front of your hood... You keep your chin up and look at the road that is a couple of feet in front of you and its surroundings... So that pattern of "driving through the changes" will dictate the fingerings and the different ways you can play the same chords...

2. I wouldn't advice to leave your finger there just to make it easier on you. Yes, your next finger won't have to press as hard, but this might come and bite you later on. Then, you might find afterward that it is hard for you to change to certain chords because your hand is stuck somewhere else. I say deal with the pressure and get your fingers used to it. You will have less fingers to drag to the next position.

Again, it depends on where you're going... If you're coming back to that position, sure... why not?

Cossy - great! Thanks for that. Since I am just playing the scale there seems to be economy in hitting, say E,F,G with 2 fingers down on F and G (for G) but I can see I need to anticipate where that first finger might be needed next.

How long to Satch Boogie do you reckon? :0)

that depends entirely on you... I still can't play the thing decently, but I haven't really practiced or tried to figure it out in many years... I guess it scared me away a long time ago and I never wnet back to it... maybe I should...

CommodoreDrake - It looks like you have a lot of guitar advice now...let us know what you choose...

GoldenGirl2 - Here...I'll help you out with Porcupine Tree. Here's their MySpace page:

http://www.myspace.com/porcupinetree

You can listen to some of their songs there, assuming you have Flash installed. I recommend starting with Blackest Eyes and Trains from the album In Absentia. From there, go to the album Deadwing and check out Arriving Somewhere But Not Here.

After that, if you like the heavier stuff go for something like Shallow or Halo. If you like the lighter stuff, listen to Lazarus or maybe Open Car.

I'd love to hear what you think...have fun! :-)

cosmic_ape - I didn't realize you were a lefty...if we have time on Saturday maybe we can go to Sam Ash (across the street from Guitar Center) and I can show you the sweet lefty Strat that Al nearly fell in love with when he was out here...
Listening to: Paul Gilbert - Burning Organ (current song: Amy Is Amazing)

Wow the Eric Johson thing was great - thanks - just makes me sigh how much there is to learn, step 1 of the 1000 step journey I guess.

slanshroom - I agree with you, balancing the digital age with teaching kids gratitude and initiative is a constant battle. How old/many are your kids?
