T2Jers- My quest for affordable home recording continues. Will This do anything I need to record my own music? I understand from reading numerous threads that I will get the best results from a mic on the cabinet as opposed to direct from my GSP 2101.

Does this thing have drum kits built in? Can I create my own drum tracks directly from this? And if I eventually add a set of Roland TD 20s, can I easily separate each drum pad to different channels? And from what I understand about it you can add thousands of tracks to the mix and use the ones you want. Correct? I mean I looked at a TASCAM US 224 but will spend close to half the $ on that and still not have near the capabilities of this set.

I appreciate any feedback from anyone who knows anything at all about home recording.later more coffee burly

start off with audacity if you dont know too much about comps or recording stuff, its free simple and provide the basics

then move into sometihng like cool edit pro.adobe audition, cubase or what not, pro tools is great but i wouldnt really recomend it as the first recording program to try and get my head around, but it is nice to have i guess... i just hate its awkwardness

for example you'll get an ilok usb dongle with the mxbox that you need to have pluged in the computer for using pro tools on it, it contains data that lets you use the software, so you register at the dongles company site.. the digidesign site, and transfare the data across, the mbox only uses usb 1 for some bizare reason too and only one program at a time can use the mbox as a soundcard... + make sure your computer matches the specs, pro tools wont work without the necessary requerments, i believe theres intel and amd chipsets that wont work with it, so get ready for some errors!

other than that once it gets goinf its ifne, but its awful for system resources... i have this ...theres a few other packages that are much better value and get you going up and running faster

I don't know anything at all about recording, other than walking into a studio and plunking down the cash,..did that in the 80s. Problem is that's too expensive and by the time I pay studio musicians...well ya know. I want something simple I can lay down tracks to when the mood strikes me and modify as I go. I don't really have a lot of time to devote with the day job:-) and not good enough to make a living at it. But I dearly love to play and have some good ideas I would like to put on a recording.

With a program like Audacity I will need an interface like some sort of compatible multi- track right?

Maybe I should make an offer on Weiners computer I bet that's a trick unit with a lot of goodies already installed,. I know it says it has been cleaned with Leopard installed but I wonder how clean?

Thanks guys..anyone else have ideas?

Dear Joe,

I know you probably get thousands of requests like this, but I'm hoping you'll take the time to read this.

I was diagnosed 2 years ago with Multiple Sclerosis and over the last 6 or so months it has become almost impossible for me to walk without a walker or wheel chair. Also, my mind has been affected with vertigo, which is a daily problem. I haven't been able to work now for about 2 months. I'm working with some great doctors here in Chicago, but so far all of the treatments haven't helped ease up my MS. I am a really big fan of yours and I've been fortunate to see you in concert a few times. Anyway, my hands are the only thing that hasn't been affected by the MS and I was wondering if it would be possible for you to send me an autographed guitar. My 9 year old daughter is also a big fan, and she can kick some serious butt on Guitar Hero playing the Satch Boogie. I know you probably can't do something like this, because all your fans probably would love to have an autographed guitar. If you can't I understand and I'll still be listening to your music. It really helps my through my rough days when my body is having a really bad flare up.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, God Bless and please keep making music. It truly inspires me to push through my illness.

Burly - I saw your post about home recording and I know how hard it is to find the right equipment.

Have you ever thought about instead of buying all that expensive equipment that takes up space and instead buying a really high powered computer with all the toys on there?

Here's a list of the programs I use at home for my keyboard, they are all Midi capable and my computer hooks directly with my keyboard.

Pianoteq Cakewalk Dimension Pro Toontrack EZDrummer Broomstick Bass Peavey Revalver Cakewalk Sonar 8: Producer Edition

It's obviously not as awesome as studio recording but the sound quality is really great and it saves space, time and money. I've never owned a single guitar amp in my life and I'm quite happy with the stuff I can get out of those programs. But of course, I'm a keyboardist for the most part alot of those programs are geared toward a keyboard, but the guitar program is really great, and yes I do play guitar, just can't say it on the T2J forums.

I hope you find something you are interested in, not sure if you play keyboards at all, but just thought I'd pitch in my 2 cents.

Burly - LOL. Nice Saprano reference. Sure do miss that series! By the way, I went to check out some Tony Spinner, but no one had any of his cd's in stock. Itunes did have a recording from 2007 called Live in Europe. I downloaded it on your advice. I like it. He really reminds me of a slightly less bluesy Robin Trower. I really like it alot.

Do the Stu - Early last week I went and picked up DMB live in Central Park. Wow! Great concert. Absolutely love the energy. I decided to get the DVD also this weekend. I'm hooked. They have great stage presence.

pro tools gets absolutly raped on vista, if u get a new machine, dont get vista! i use a 1.5gb of ram here on an old amd processor,

xp dual core + with 2gb of ram is decent enough for pt to run effective enoughwithout much hassle, i put xp on a 3gb dual core laptop, and its a disaster

but thats if u go windows, mac osx is always the best choice!

Alan- I absolutely cannot stand Vista, which is on the laptop I am on now. My desktop is a few years old with XP.

I will be switching to MAC as well on my next purchase, In my side business I use Microsoft Office which I understand is not supported by MAC.

Hybes- Tony Spinner is a super good guy. He grew up a couple of hours from here in Missouri, and played with a couple of groups in my area over the course of about 15 years then I lost track of him until I heard he was on the road with Toto. He used to drive around in his 1964 Chevrolet convertible (thus the song My '64) just a down to earth kinda guy, he helped get my band some gigs in Missouri and Illinois where he started playing. I always knew he belonged somewhere besides clubbing here locally, not much happenin' even in Memphis. He lives in The Netherlands now and if anyone is in the area check out his site and try to catch him live. An exceptional showman.

Check out his site for all in The Netherlands. look at the Tour dates. I think he has dates posted through 05 April. You wont regret it.
