Joe

Is the square surrounding the Chickenfoot your contribution from your days with the Squares?

Sunset magazine's April 2009 issue has an article about raising chickens--primarily hens.

If there was a Joe's Bar and Grill here, they would serve chicken pies and chicken stew or (Stu?)

Guitarvibes--Why do you keep "stripping me" until I'm buck naked? Verbally that is.

Scubadaz--Why do people write songs such as "For the Love of God"...."A Secret Prayer"......"A Train of Angels"....."Lights of Heaven".......and other songs that drip with God and spirituality???

Blue_Moon---My guitar is killing my fingertips.....My guitar teacher is encouraging me to buy an electric because it is easier to play certain songs and the fretboard is more user friendly and it fits better the cut-out guitar body. Wish it was that easy. Electrics with their amps and cabs are beyond what I can afford right now.

Quite.

Joe

I could use some clothes. I'm here stripped naked and it ain't a pretty sight!! Yeah, yeah....I have a T-shirt and blue jeans....typical coverings these days. Language is being stripped away from me and I am naked and confused. ;-/

Lots of naked people out there these days--homeless naked, food desert naked, telecommunications challenged, etc. Modern day naked is more complex than it was a century ago!

I loved the way you laughed through your guitar during the Chickenfoot intro with Sammy, Mikey and Chad....at about 0:29!

Tracie--I'm playin' my guitar, but it's frowning at me.....scary!

Quite.....GoldenGirl2MM

GG: get your teacher to help you pick up a good second hand or cheap electric and spring the $50 or whatever for a belt-clip amp, or a bit more for a cheap secondhand signal processor/amp simulator with speaker/headphones.

That's a cheap way out to get started. Then save those pennies for the cab/pedals/etc as you go.

GG: microcubes and other portable amps can come battery powered and mains, can have effects and headphone jacks too.

Here you can get a beginner setup for $150 to $300. That's a cheap guitar, mini amp with distortion/effects/ gig bag and stand.

If one of 'em had to go, I'd actually be in favor of giving Ice Nine the boot. I like it a bit more than Summer Song, but I grow tired of it faster (not to say I'm not also tired of Summer Song). I've heard Ice Nine a few tours in a row now and I think a break would be nice.

I guess I will get my break because I don't see Chickenfoot doing Ice Nine...I don't know that Michael Anthony has ever really played slap bass.

cheese101 - I'm all for Joe bringing back that jacket, but then I think he also needs to bring back the SBM flame pants. ;-)
SuperSwingDog - That is pretty cool...I love stuff like that. I've seen some sidewalk chalk artists in places like Venice Beach drawing similar things.

I thought this is a cool picture...I found it in the comments on the page you posted.

roo - I was at Amoeba Music in Hollywood the other day and saw a used cassette single for Flying In A Blue Dream. It had about five songs on it, all album tracks (I think One Big Rush and Big Bad Moon were among the other songs included).

Do you have any interest in that, as a collector? I looked on your website but only really see CDs listed. I can pick it up for you next time I'm there, if you'd like...maybe we can work out a trade for something.

Joe - the thing is I think I have ran in to Larry Bill before.

E Mixo problem wanting to resolve in A only occurs when I try to stay with a pedal point in E Have not tried it in a E progression jAm situation..

I have employed double stops for years in minor pentatonic. (just didn't know it.)

Boy From Seattle- Would like very much to become comfortable with playing these Hendrix style double stop patterns along with the phrasings Vai did with them.. I think I shall have to take a slight detour on learning the modes and learn this song. Anyone else had experience with this song? Give me some pointers if so please.

burly, if you're playing E mixo and want to resolve to A, you're doing it wrong...

E mixo double stops on the 3rd and 4th strings. descending my ear wants to resolve in A major,..a totally different style and feeling. E Mixo is A maj. I just seems like the thing to do if I follow the pattern all the way down the neck. I can resolve in E but it sounds dissonant in pedal point E to me.

burly,
play the blues, when you do it, do it scale chord approach. In a basic 12 bar blues in let's say A, you will have to play A mixolyidian, D mixolydian and E mixolydian, according to the chord changes... Do it slowly and try to get into a pentatonic mindset...

So, to make a mixolydian scale sound bluesy, you can bend from a minor third to a major third and try to play the chord tones (A - C# - E - G) predominantly, using all the others as passing tones. You might want to play the raised 6th (F#, for A major) a lot and after you go through all the changes you might start getting a hold to it... Just play the classic major pentatonic box with the added flatted 7th degree (G in this case) and you will be on your way...

Also, you might want to listen to JOE's "Hill Groove" and listen carefully to the C mixolydian vamp at the beginning... and watch how it never sounds like it's going to resolve to F major...

I understand that part it's just that the double stops beginning on C# on the 4th sting and the E on the 3rd string and descending this pattern all the way down to the E on the 4th and A# on the 3rd has a country feel and I want to naturally resolve the pedal point in A maj.

I can resolve in E and make it right, I just have to be careful how I resolve.

Joe - I didn't realize Andy Milton had passed away. Was he involved in any other bands after the Squares? We know what you and Jeff have been up to, obviously...it'd be neat to hear what Andy went on to do as well.

To answer your question, I found those two songs while looking around online over the years, trying to track down some of your rare/out of print recordings. I have no idea where they originated...this was all two or three computers ago. ;-)

I think the Squares stuff is really fun to listen to...is there any chance you could put an official release together sometime in the future, either on CD or through iTunes? I bet a lot of us here would love to hear that...

Austin: Not really - I saw a bunch of them at Amoeba in SF in October last year and passed over them, and they come up on eBay. I guess one day I will regret not making the collection "complete" but I question their collectability. CD-yes, Vinyl yes.... Crappy tape?? Hmmmmmmm...

Now a vinyl of the squares would be a very nice addition to the collection, anyone got a spare one lying around? I'll pay you more than Joe does, unless he wins the Coldplay case, unless of course I win the lotto first!

:)

While I'm asking everyone to do massive favours for me, if anyone has connections or ability to get hold of an extra JSBDG black leather (limited) guitar strap - I seriously need one. Thats what is missing from my Guitar pack, that's the price you pay for getting a one before Joe signs the certs.

I have put in the legacy CD (signed) and since got the cert. But the purdy black 20th BDG strap is missing still... :(

Thanks for any help you awesome, well connected satchers!
