Also, Badd 11 and Badd4 are the same thing. The 4th degree of B is E, and so is the 11th, the only difference being that an 11th is an octave higher.

If you are learning "Always with ..." the chord Joe plays is technically a Badd11, or Badd11no5 if you want to nitpick. I suppose the 5 (F#) is supplied by the melody, but that fits under the umbrella of implied harmony.

Thanks Ethn! Much appreciated. It's a chord Joe said is used for If I Could Fly.

Er....don't suppose you could describe the strumming pattern for the rhythm section for IICF?

And here's Oh Yeah from Cabo 2 nights ago

If I could fly would be a different chord then, nevermind. I thought you were saying you wanted the 4th to be on the 1st string, which is why I suggested Badd11 instead.

true, I add 4th on 4th string! Sundaymorning...... :-)
Would have to listen to the song to see which voicing Joe used (maybe someone's got the "official" songbook of that album)

I just looked at a tab of "If I could fly", and the tab I saw uses Badd11, not Badd4. If the E in the chord is not within the same octave as the root, then it is not a Badd4, it is a Badd11.

Well Joe's words were "If I Could Fly does indeed start off with a first position G maj 7 to an F# min 7 add 11 , twice, then remodulates to a B major with added 4th (first string)."

Should I try the

2 4 4 2 2 0

or the

0 4 4 0 2 0

?

yep, 4+7= 11 :-)
with that progression the 2nd option makes more sense (see if you hear the low E in it on the record...)
If Joe slept of the Cabo tequila on Sammy's beach he could tell you, or even better: Galen Henson!

Yeah some people don't really care about the difference between a 4th and an 11th, or a 2nd and a 9th. For instance, people frequently call "Add9no3rd" chords "sus2" chords, even though they are not technically the same thing.

It's not really a huge deal, but if you want to get the song exact then you are going to want to use an 11th, not a 4th for the added extension on that chord.

The tab I saw used the open E string to get the 11th.

Is the first one a Bmaj add4 or 11 too? The second one looks like a partial B chord?

I am a complete beginner, so pretend you're explaining it to a 5 year old :0)

The Badd4 voicing JOE uses on the verse of "If I could Fly" is this:

e-0
B-0
G-8
D-9
A-9
E-7

Both the first and second strings are played open. This is a common acoustic guitar voicing... For the chorus, he plays Em7, A, A/D, Bmadd4 and that voicing is:

e-0
B-3
G-4
D-4
A-2
E-x

Hope that helps...

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. Joe said the chorus is "Emin7, A maj, Dmaj 9, Bmin" but I'll play around with it.

Any idea what the strumming pattern is? I still don't have an ear for that.

Guitarvibes - I really need 115 posts! Working guitar stuff out is incredibly complicated but I am looking forward to being able to understand it in about 10 years and I enjoy nutting things out..
