Joe rolls off his highs and lows... a lot of midrange tone in his playing. That certainly makes a difference. The other key factor is the use of a tube amp... sounds much different than a solid state amp. Not sure what to say about the pedal... I know Joe used one in his early days, but his tone and sound were different then as well. It depends on what era you are trying to emulate.

koszanski _ Joe, when he uses one, doesn't used to play with ds1 standard pedal. He uses a modified one.

Reading the comments around the web, DT fans are going retarded on the whole MP issue. He's still a drummer, still gonna hear him play somewhere, and DT is gonna have to now deal with the decision THEY made. He just wanted a break, so why not take one? IMO, they fucked up hard, so now they'll get a new drummer and clog on. Mike will be free to do whatever his heart desires. I know for a fact that MP is one of the hardest working drummers out there. Like Joe, music just oozes from his soul. For people to say it's the worst day of their life and be angry at A7X...well that's just very scary, and I'm not even gonna say out loud what I'm hoping and praying NEVER happens again when a band splits. MP is totally gutted, and extremely sad about his decision, but it's his life and he has to do what he has to do. That silver lining is that we have 25 years worth of Dream Theater WITH MP to listen to whenever we want. The band isn't gone, they're just moving in a different direction.

Anyways, on to other things :-)

New Sully Erna solo cd coming out on Tuesday! WOOT!!!

New Joe in 4 weeks! The free download of Light Years Away is killer!

Grampy - that's the very first thing I thought of when I read the news... of the very, very few people who could even attempt to play Chad's stuff Portnoy would be near the top of the short list. He loves playing "weird" (other peoples') stuff like that anyways, could be a perfect fit?

On a side note, I've never been able to enjoy DT, I've tried and tried and tried, I love all the members individually (except for that wanker singer) but the vocals just turn me completely off. Jebus knows I LOVE Petrucci's playing. I even saw them here live in the Summer opening for Maiden, it was great (except for that wanker of a singer).

Good luck to Portnoy... he is one helluva monster of a drummer!

smooches,
» Phył

Would like all's input. What is the best way for you to put your songs from your head to composition form. Do you record to a digital recorder? Sing the idea to recorder. Start with a drum beat? I could never get the music from my head to computer the right way so I'm looking for your ideas. Thanks and rock on.

I use a program called Band in a Box... it contains hundreds of styles (jazz, rock, metal, swing)... you name it. You then pick an appropriate genre (rock) and listen or go through the various substyles until you like the sound of the beat or rhythm... from there I compose the song and practice over it. Then I convert it to wave for use in Guitar Tracks Pro 4.0, which is a 32 track digital program by Cakewalk.

hey Joe im an old fan . i m just amaized of the new stuff that you came up lately ,just whatched the' live un paris' ... maybe 99% of artists start somewhat good or great with there albums ...u r one of the very very few and my favorit artist that comes up awesome quality in music performance... i never get bored listening to these songs and especially the old ones. one of my favorite old one is "The New Blues" wich i hope to here it in any future concerts; i m not aware of it in any of the dvds concerts....I also want to let u know that there is something in the music that u play that moved my heart in a sens of positiveness ,hope , a freedom that is eternel like, and for that i really believe that u ve been very much enspired by God... I m a christian man,a family man and i put you on my prayer list and i pray for you to have safe flights and keep up the good work, the Great work were you re THE Best!!!

Does anyone here know the band Animals As Leaders? My little brother bought one of their CDs the other day. I like 'em a lot--crazy instrumental stuff...very cool.

Skippygirl - I'm not sure if I'll be hanging out long enough to try to meet Joe, but I'll give him a hug for you if we cross paths. ;-)
koszanski - At one point Joe's DS-1 settings were 9 o'clock, 5 o'clock, and 2 o'clock, but he used the original Japanese pedals that had a different tone.
michelle - I think MP and DT are equally to blame. When they finished the Iron Maiden tour, they probably agreed they'd be back to work in January. They've taken breaks for a few months before, spending them however they choose (solo albums, G3 tours, other side projects, time at home).

MP spent his break from DT playing with another band...his choice. But if he wants a break as a result of what he's doing in DT downtime, well, it's clear DT isn't his first priority. So I can understand the band's frustration, and wanting to move on.

I love MP, but I also love all the other guys in DT. He's a big part of the band, but he's not THE band...ya know? There have been some crazy fan responses on all sides of this.

Phydeaux_3 - Check out Liquid Tension Experiment. They're instrumental...the lineup is Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci, and Jordan Rudess (DT's current keyboard player, but the albums were recorded before he joined the band). Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, others) is on bass.

...Austin...

Received my VOX JS ICE 9 overdrive pedal yesterday!

So far I am very happy with it. Been doing back to back comparisons with it and my Satchurator pedal... obviously the Ice 9 has more boost/punch and is definitely a warmer pedal. I've favored the vintage setting over the modern to this point. The Satchurator provides much more bite and edge. Personally I think either with or without the "more" switch engaged and 300ms of delay sounds pretty nice. (When the mood calls for it, I'm also running a 535Q wah, Digitech Whammy, in front of a JSX 212, usually playing my JS1000)

edit - having both the Ice 9 and the Satchurator is my preference as opposed to having to choose between the two!
