Hello Joe,

how are things going? Jetlag still troubling you?

This time I got some terrible news. Yesterday my family recieved a phone call: my uncle died. He ended his life by jumping in front of a train.

Sadly as this loss is, the first half of his funeral ceremony is...

you guessed it, monday night, concert night in Tilburg.

I already called the venue to ask if it was ok that I'd come later (which it was) and I will do everything in my power to be there. Will have to cancel coming early and perhaps taking a photo with you. Hope you understand, but then again I know you will.

Even though things have taken a strange turn, I WILL be there, I promise.

D777

PS Now i WOULD like to make a song request for the concert: Premonition, it helped me much since yesterday in terms of solace. Thank you.

as much as i love buckethead ( he has been a favorite of mine for ever , even my nic on here is an anagram for buckethead) , I don't think he would be a good fit for G3.. his playing is amazing , but some of his songs are a bit out there for most .. again i love buckethead .. but he is not very commercial , like the others that have graced the G3 stages .

LOVE to see all the Buckethead discussion... interesting to hear everyone's thoughts. Here's my 2¢ - I think he's the greatest guitar player of our times. Sure he's a freak (I'm more than Ok with that, btw) and mysterious as well, but I think it's just pure genius, he can go to Disneyland anytime he wants, never be swamped by fans.

His music is just on a whole other level. He plays heavy (brutal and wonderful metal speed & style) and mellow (his "beautiful" music is the most beautiful in the World, imho) and every-flipping-thing in-between. He can even shred on bass AND he does the slap'n pop thing on a guitar, really inventive. His signature kill switch button (I've long ago installed one on my Yamaha) is put to very good use and not just a cheap gimmick, you realize this very quickly when you try to emulate his stuff.

As for recommendations, the list would be very, very long. There are just so many different styles it's hard to know where to start. My first album was Monsters And Robots when it came out in 99-ish. Since then I've gone on to collect each and every single thing he's done. I've found that a large number of Zappa fans also come over to the Buckethead side, and it seems the addiction factor also weighs heavily too. Most of us are what FZ fans often refer to as a "completist' meaning that we just won't rest until we have every little thing that's ever been.

The Discography is absolutely phenomenal, unbelievable even! Buckethead is definitely THE most prolific artist of our times, one of the reasons I think the Zappa-philes get on board, you have to respect that level of dedication to the work ethic.

I can't honestly say that I love everything he does, there's a few things I don't care much for in my collection, but there are also a lot of things that I quite simply couldn't live without.

My #1 recommendation, for everyone here, to go and check out is one of the albums he does with Travis Dickerson and Brain, called The Dragons Of Eden it is one of my all-time favorites. Another album that vividly demonstrates his ability to go from heavy to soft and back to heavy(est!) again is Buckethead And Friends - Enter The Chicken , there are some seriously heavy AND some seriously beautiful songs on that album. Love it!. For more pure mellow stuff check out Electric Tears or the new one Captain Eo's Voyage. But again, as I said, the list is almost unending.

Maybe everyone else here could suggest a few of their favorites?

I am ALL ABOUT the Buckethead. Every year at Halloween I wear it while driving my bus and/or it's my costume when I take the kids out trick-or-treating . Two years ago (on the bus) was the first time somebody "recognized" who I was... I gave the kid a copy of Albino Slug the next day as a "prize".. how cool is that?!

Also, whoever it was that said: "Joe, Steve & Buckethead for G3!" I could not have said it any better myself, unless they went to a G4 configuration and brought Paul Gilbert out with them as well. Both excellent examples of the student becoming as great as the master.

smooches,
» Phy³

A brilliant show in Paris - 27/10. The crowd really made for a great performance and the playing and sound was brilliant. I would however like to thank the person who thought that all my camera gear was better in their possession than mine on the train from Paris to Den Haag today. I don't care about the camera, I just want the memory card with all the great photos I'd taken at the show last night and over the past 2 days in Paris. Thanks for being a thief!! Look forward to seeing Joe again on Friday in Amsterdam!!

Thanks for taking the time to post your input on Buckethead! I sincerely appreciate it. I did actually think about trying to come up with a Buckethead costume for Halloween this year as well! (I have too much hair, and a goatee to be a very good Joe Satriani!) Your costume is cool, and your little one is too cute. Very cool of you to reward the one who recognized you I might add. At this point I'm enjoying discovering all the jems BH has done. I admit as well, that not everything I've heard I'm in love with... but I have enjoyed the majority of it. I'm glad you reminded me he was out there and gave me a reason to check out his work again

Death Cube K - yeah, I've always liked your nickname and knew where it came from. Personally, I suppose BH not being as "commercial" appeals to me. :)

js1200js1000 - you might be surprised if you listen to at least more than 20 seconds of Buckethead. *EDIT: whoops, sorry my bad - scubadaz was the one that mentioned he hadn't listened to more than 20 seconds of BH - sorry!)
(Then again, if you're not - you're just that much more sure you don't care for it! haha) You might want to start with some of the more mellow/soulful selections before taking on some of the manic speed driven melt-your-face choices. :) And of course, not everybody is into the same thing here... well, except JOE of course! (Who BTW still remains my all time favorite, and has just seemed to be great all around - including as a person)

Have a great day everyone

From Guitar World's Dec issue - 30 Greatest Shred Albums of All Time:

Buckethead

Monsters and Robots

WHO: The Enigma
SHREDDER CREDENTIALS: He wears an upside-down KFC bucket as a hat and calls himself Buckethead, but these might be two of Brian Carroll's least unusual qualities.  Insane four-finger fret-hand taps, wild chromatics, octave displacement, atonal, wide-interval runs and string-skippnig patterns, and phenomenal if not unfathomable speed figure prominently in his work.  Buckethead's guitar lines are often so blindingly fast and angular that they resemble nothing so much as video game effects.  More over, he's a man so eccentric and enigmatic that even Axl Rose couldn't handle him.

SONG: "Jordan"

...though Joe doesn't consider himself a "shredder"...

From Guitar World's Dec issue - 30 Greatest Shred Albums of All Time:

Joe Satriani

Surfing with the Alien

WHO: The teacher
SHREDDER CREDENTIALS: Satriani almost singlehandedly brought instrumental rock guitar to the masses in the mid Eighties with this, his second solo release.  He infused incredible technique with a heavy dose of melodicism, with tight, compact songs that boast singing, vocal-like guitar leads, and are then further adorned with whammy-bar squawks and screams, pick taps, fretboard-spanning arpeggios and all types of outrageous moves.  A guitarist's guitarist, he taught everyone from Steve Vai to Kirk Hammett to Primus' Larry Lalonde.

SONG: "Satch Boogie"

Hi Joe

I am besides myself with great happiness that my husband and I are to see you in Toronto on December 8, 2010. We live close to Ottawa and will drive the almost six hours to see your concert. We have great seats, just five seats from the stage in front of you. This will be the first time that the both of us will be seeing you live. We have been diehard fans for many many years. Always enjoy every new CD to its fullest. I have been tuning in to Youtube, and Podcasts and watching the progress of your tour. The time is drawing nearer. We should have bought the Meet and Greet package. I bought my husband a beautiful silver 1600 JS series Ibanez guitar for his 50th birthday. He loves the guitar and plays all the time. He could have brought his guitar on the road for you to sign if we got the Meet and Greet Pkg. Oh well maybe the next time. Us seeing you live in December will be our 22 wedding anniversary gift to each other. We are even going to stay in Hotel close to the gig. This is going to be the best gift ever. I love every song you have ever composed, and a couple of your classics would be great to hear as well in the upcoming gig in TO like Made of Tears, The Extremist, Cool 9, Until We Say Goodbye, All Alone, The Forgiven Part 1&2. I don't know if you take requests, but it doesn't hurt to try. Also this coming November 1st my husband and I will be going to the Experience Hendrix concert for my birthday. It will be great seeing Steve Vai and other members in this concert, it will be a great night. Too bad we missed you in the last Hendrix tour in the Spring, but there will be other times right? Anyway keep up the Great Work Joe. You are my favourite artist above and beyond anyone. Can't wait to see you in the very near future.
