Michelle....thats so cool you did that for him! I wanted to see Al back then but I was a year too late. I saw the Music Magic tour in 1977 in the Quad Cities IA . Al had left the band. I was bummed about that but it was a fantastic show. It might interest you to know if you don't already there is a RTF4 going on tour this summer woohoo! Jean Luc Ponty and Frank Gambale join Chick , Stanley and Lenny. Check out www.RTF4.com :)

Putting together a little mini tour to include Las Vegas, LA and SF Portland and Seattle. Need some help from the LA peeps on a good place and maybe one other band. You can check our stuff at Earth to Ashes and the band we are looking to play with Lonero. Any help would be great. Looks like we are targeting the end of June or the end of Aug.

Thanks,

Civ

Good going. I've seen people who believed they were old at 30 and made that their reality.

Hey Joe! Im new to your site although I've known about you forever... What interested me the most was your interactiveness with the people registered to it. I have a question that I'm sure is easy enough for you to give a quick response back to. I have been playing for about 5-6 years, and it has completely engulfed my life. Im not very knowledgeable on theory however, but I DO have immense feel for how the instrument and player should exist through each other. My question for you is, how important has the knowledge of musical language compared to actual creativeness and technique been for you in your career? It may be a long shot throwing this question out there, but I am a firm believer in making an idea concrete in the universe. My thoughts have been posed, and I hope with all my might that you'll share some constructive feedback with me. I want to personally thank you for all that you have and will inspire in me, and if it wasn't for you I'd be a hell of a lot less imaginative with the music that I write! Take care Mr. Satriani

Dear Joe, My names Kory Caines. I currently live in Vallejo, California and i have been playing guitar for 5 years without lessons. I love to play my guitar it allows me to take my imagination to places i never could before. I dropped out of school just to be able to practice more. Unlike other parents my dad has encouraged me to play because he says i have alot of talent and potential. My dream is to have a carer in doing something i love best and thats playing my guitar.

My question to you is ive been playing so long and at the rate im going i know ill never be famous and i was wondering if you could explain to my dad why a teacher is important. I ask him if i can get lessons but he tells me all the time how is a teacher gonna teach you something that you probably already know. I know if i had a proper teacher that one day ill be as good as you. But as i was saying could you please write back explaining to my dad(Kevin Caines)why a teacher is necessary to become a great guitarist. If you do not respond I understand I mean your a guitar legend but if you do happen to read this and write back then thank you =)

-Kory Caines

Brian, I saw the RTF site after the show. I really hope we can make it if they come this way. My hubs has been a fan since the 70's too. lol!

P. Lily, did they tell your dad how much time? Like months or years? What a decision to have to make. Sending love and prayers your way.

Tiki, when you graduated I was being promoted to 4th grade. Thanks. I feel so much younger now. lol!

Two Shay ~BadNomad~Ovation1~ Michelle-

Thanks for your good wishes for dad & your prayers.......your kindness is most appreciated .... It is a difficult time ...I know many of you have faced this yourselves ...such a crappy disease that effects so many. My mother-in-law passed in '96 from it & she had so much suffering. before the end .

Michelle- Dad had tests & scans on Mon. to help determine the question of how much time....he could not have some of the scans because the dye would harm his transplanted kidney..don't want to add kidney failure to the mix.....

Anyway ..been listening to lots of Joe & yes ....it always helps. :-)

Cory, everyone can use a teacher. Even the best. Think of the best athletes in the world, the best football teams, the best Olympians, they all have coaches and teachers.

No matter your ability, it can always be useful to have someone else point out what you are doing, challenge your technique, set exercises to broaden your mind and your approach.

However, a teacher need not be a "teacher" in the classic sense. A great student can learn from anyone, even just watching someone perform, reading up on technique, analyzing your own style, etc.

I personally think the best approach is of course a bit of both. :)
