P. Lily, congrats & welcome home to your son! My kids are finishing up finals this week. Soooo much stress for finals week. lol! It'll be nice to have my mini me back home for a couple weeks.

T-Bone, you hit the nail on the head! Unless you have a good sense of humor, yer gonna have a pretty crappy life IMO. FTFF and get on with it I says! Oh yeah, nobody can be ALmazing but Al. Mark is just...um...less Mark. lol! (hi 5 on that too MLONDON)

I saw a pick-up truck today with SEVEN Ron Paul bumper stickers on it! One said "I am a Republican, but not that kind". Nice!

Here's one for the board!

Disappointed by Jeff Beck

Prior to discovering Joe a little over ten years ago, Jeff Beck was probably my favorite all time guitarist. If you're posting on this site, you know that it's Joe's music that predominates his allure. It's not just shredding.

I was disappointed to read the following from an interview given by Jeff Beck:

"Steven: Do you have any feelings about Satriani or any of the newer players?

Jeff Beck: Yeah, I think they’ve perfected their style and that’s pretty much it in a nutshell. I just wonder where they’re going to go musically. Not just technique-wise because they’ve done that. A lot of solos I hear sound so incredible, but they sound like somebody practicing. You know? They sound a bit soulless – fiery, but at the same time, lacking in spirit and soul.

Steven: Do you think that players in the ’80s, in twenty years time, will have made as big a statement as the main players from the ’60s did?

Jeff Beck: I really don’t know. That all depends on what happens to the main body of their music. If it’s cherished the way ’60s music seems to be, if there’s that nostalgia, then in twenty years they’ll look back and say, “Listen to this.” But my theory is perhaps not because there’s such similarities among the guitarists.

At the end of the day, there are a hell of a lot of notes being played out there and I defy the average middle-American or the average punter to differentiate between them. When you sit down and really listen, then you can obviously tell who’s got what chops going. But they play so fast and hammer-ons and all that, it’s got to the point where the human ear can’t really receive that information at that speed anymore."

To relegate Joe to this crowd is just insulting to Joe, and it suggests that Jeff Beck is frankly made insecure by Joe. This is called damning someone with faint praise, and time will tell whose contribution to Music is greater. These are not judgments that are best made over twenty and thirty year periods. Jeff Beck is a great musician and guitarist but these words diminish him.

Thanks,

Nick

Cube, yer my weight-loss hero :)) U lost a whole person! Must not have too much farther to go I bet, and you've done it the super-smart way...changed your lifestyle 180 degrees!!

Hope we get to see a few Christmas Jack pics, he's so cute!! Yer fun is only beginning, lol!!

Igneousiceman, if yer still around....I'm thinking you might be a road biker, would that be right? If so, maybe sometime you might feel like chatting with my son. He's totally into road biking now and hopes to do a century ride as soon as the weather is better. Meanwhile he's training indoors on a trainer, doing weights and watching his diet. He's dropped weight, toned up totally, muscles on top of muscles on his legs especially. He eats, drinks and sleeps biking, lol! When he's tired, THEN he plays guitar....if he's not busy reading about biking stuff that is, lol!!

So besides cube, Chris is an inspiration to me too...maybe one day I'll get my fat butt up and exercise more....does lifting my purse around count for anything? LOL!!!

@nick satullo- That is a shame he thinks that way. But I'm sure he hasn't really heard that many of Joe's songs. He probably heard Surfing With The Alien or Ice 9 which are songs that emphasize pure power and playing a lot of notes a second really increases the emotion of the song. But I doubt that Jeff Beck has sat down and listened to Starry Night, Crying, or Love Thing. Sometimes a lot of notes also create a great feeling as well. The solo to Crushing Day IMO is his best. Not because it is really fast and so technically difficult, which at some parts it is less than others, but because it's well-constructed, creative, and enjoyable to listen to. The amount of notes he uses doesn't take away from the emotion effect of the solo. It's how he uses them is what really matters. And I think that Crushing Day's solo is the perfect combination of human creativity and pure skill.

Very well said Oxley........

Edit- It also appears the interview was from quite some time back...like perhaps the Late 80's early 90's & at that time Joe did not have a huge body of work to critique. I truly believe that JOE'S music has stood the test of time.

I can not stop listening to JOE for any length of time by the time I'm done listening to one album I'm nostalgic for another ......

Peace Lily: If the Jeff Beck interview were from a more distant vintage, it would be excusable. However, it was in 2010.

http://guitarinternational.com/2010/06/08/jeffbeck/

Joe always praises Jeff Beck. Even if Jeff Beck truly believes what he said, he was far from being a gentleman.

Too bad. In my opinion, Jeff Beck has not written music in about 25 to 30 years that is on a par with what Joe has consistently produced for over twenty years. To then use his iconic status to undermine Joe is something for which I have no respect.

Thanks,

Nick

I don't see where Jeff slighted Joe, just didn't heap high enough praise? Jeff is amazing and so is Joe. Each in their own way.

Castle - IMO you're not far off the mark there girlie. Further to that I have to agree with some of what Beck says regarding too much going on too quickly sometimes, having said that it's great sometimes when I revisit some of Joe's stuff and I think 'bugger me, I never noticed that before', I get there in the end i suppose. Mebbe what Beck means is that some of Joe's (and his peers) stuff is simply too good for the ears of the masses at first listen and that will affect how he is remembered by the masses (or not so much). Chickenshit oops I mean Chickenfoot may help change that with the broader appeal it seems to have..
