I got my STRANGE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC book in the mail today! Fantastic pictures, especially the early 70's pics (jr)! The "Bamboo" pic is EPIC! The pic for "All Alone" has always been one of my favorite pics. Then there's Joe and Jeff tits out onstage. LOL!

Great words of praise by some of the greats. Joe's acknowledgements in the back of the book are very sweet. I haven't read the forward yet. I want to save that until I start reading the book.

This is gonna be a great read! Hope y'all got a copy!

I think no matter what aspects of Joe's catalog the listener holds close to their heart&mind as a musical experiences, this book is a must-have to see behind some of the creative forces of the music and every effort to capture it in the studios, live and 'at home'. Each album is unique in it's own way and these pages guide you on those journeys from the "EP" to" Unstoppable", including Chicken Foot as well. Though I have much reading left to do, parts of what I was able to move through were riveting in so many ways. Creative determination is all I could think of reading most of this so far, along with clearly focused artistic drive to capture exactly what Joe is hearing - before we do! Every musician, guitarist or player of any other instrument will love this content. The creative process, it's inspirations, the technical processes and 'challenges' are all there. More than few surprises as well on how all this 'Strange Beautiful Music' came to be. A personal favorite is, .. Yes, Shel, a photo of Joe talking details in the studio with a personal hero - Mick Jagger! Whoa. I have to add that I was compelled to spin some of the catalog just to reflect on what I was reading - and then hearing. Joe is very revealing in this book; Some might say from the heart, to which I agree, but I will add "from the gut" too. Bravo Joe and Jake.

I never thought I'd say this but, I'm gonna give the box a pass..having listened to Joe's awesome tunes every day since my "Surfing" cassette, and gotten every release, bonus track, best buy copy of "Black Swans" etc. the only song missing was "Ghosts"..but it's on the serious mindtrip "Paris" disc..all the stuff still sounds great to me..I just crank it and go!

and one more thing, if UM just came out why remaster it already? there is no question the man makes the best albums when he's doing it..so what? maybe I'm just crazy lol..I love Joe truly and would have so bought the silver head thing! THAT is cool..! but I am so freakin' poor anymore..there are so many other things syphoning your cash away! it's just not funny..Joe you will always be the man to me!

Just wanted to say that I have been a fan of yours since a friend of mine (also wonderful guitarist) introduced me to your music back in 1992. I was able to see you in concert, I believe at POPS, in Sauget, Il. Hoping you will make it back to the Saint Louis, MO or surrounding area for a tour. There are a lot of people out my way that love you and your music!

Joe!!!!!!!!!!! Yeahhhh box set is here!
My 1st inclination was to play them in release sequence (the way they're boxed) but i couldn't resist going for my fav albums first, since my CD player can 'only' contain six cd's. The only box i had was FZ's Shut up n play yer guitar with three cd's so this really feels like opening a treasury. When I started CD 1 my ears popped right away like you ve been at high altitude for weeks. Isn t that weird? Or is it the other way around and do the remasters take me to ........

update: By now I've A/B-ed Crystal Planet and what he says in interviews is true, there's is more room / air in the remaster. You can hear individual instruments better. The original CD sounds more powerful because everyting, including bass, is loud and clearly compressed. The thought that came to mind was it sounds more "jazz" meaning hearing individual parts and how it's all puzzeld together. So it's good Joe's finally moved up to McLaughlin recording standards. Don't hide anything in noise.
What I also -think- I hear (have to be careful not to imagine hearing things) is more nuances in Joe's sound / tone, leads sound more different between songs. Still listening to Crystal Planet since it's my long time nr1.
Switching to headphones now. Ready for take-off.....

UPdate2: I listen on monitors in my homestudio. The bettter your stereo (hifi) set the more difference and detail you will hear. If your speakers suck invest in a serious pair of headphones, I was out of this world playing the CD's on my Sennheisers HD280-pro. I've said it many times before and I will say it again: fuck MP3 (my portable players often have WAV and FLAC files)

Just like I said earlier…

"….but the sound seems better to me overall.

I'm sure the peeps with the really good gear and the musos can tell you better and why, but like I say, on my puny bose system it just sounds better."

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard almost forgotten tracks 'Banana Mango II" and "Dog with crown and earring" remastered. Art with a capital A.
Surprisingly even the latest album sounds improved...
And getting inspired to change, maybe improve, my own guitartones.

We need to fix this shitty tour schedule. Satriani, if you are going to go on tour with a CD you pumped out last year, then you need to show us a full schedule. What is this G4 crap without Vai or Morse? I will be in the US in August to November at least. I want to see some more dates. None of this crappy G4 rubbish. Let's see a real tour schedule. Show us at least 10 tour spots.

I've only listened to NOTE and SWTA so far, but wow...Joe's box set sounds amazing. I don't know how John Cuniberti makes all this old music sound so huge, but it's awesome. I'm really impressed by how good NOTE sounds...it sounds like it was recorded yesterday, not 30 years ago.

My Satch discography was a mix of original pressings and various remasterings over the years, and then imports, compilations, and iTunes to get all the bonus tracks...so the only things "new" to me are the versions of Time Machine, Cool #9, Luminous Flesh Giants, and Z.Z.'s song. But it's great to have everything in one place, in a package that's all been remastered at the same time.

I don't mean to sound like a commercial, but if you're on the fence about this at all you need to go buy it...now. Amazon has it for about $85.

Have a lot of people finished reading the book, or not quite yet? I finished that before diving into the box set...Joe's always been open with the press and his fans so there aren't any earth-shattering secrets in the book, but it's still a great read.

I got into Joe during the G3/Crystal Planet era, so my favorite parts of the book are the unfamiliar things before that...especially sections on the EP and NOTE. I know I (politely) complain about certain songs being in the setlist tour after tour, but after reading Joe's comments on their recording process, I totally understand why he plays them all the time. The die-hard fan in me will always want to hear Joe's other songs until I've heard them all, but it's OK. :-)

michelle - Chad Smith and the Bombastic Meatbats were awesome. I took a few pictures, but they're still on my camera...I'll try to upload a few tomorrow morning for you. Chad really runs the show, and he's so full of energy, it's great. Guitarist Jeff Kollman's mom was there, and Chad was making a lot of VERY funny and almost offensive jokes about her all night.

I don't know if you've seen any pictures of the Baked Potato, but it's a small place with a low ceiling made of those tiles you see in offices. Chad was throwing drumsticks up there and getting them stuck like they were pencils...it was great.

They closed the show with a very cool jazzy cover of Who Are You.

...Austin...

Whats the jazz with Summer Song, Austin!? ;)

It's actually quite reasonably priced for a whole catalog of music. I shall pick it up along with the book when I return to the merry homeland

Just needed to contact with kudos on the remastering job of the box set. I was pleasantly amazed at the clarity and separation of parts that, although present in the original, were hardly as up front. NIce use of mid separation. The first 2 discs were complete revelations. The whole set, except the last 2, which probably needed very little work, were markedly better sonically. The synths on Engines of Creation sounded as if they were live in my studio. Outstanding job Mr. Cuniberti! Really overdue, considering the amount of material amassed in your career, Joe. Even though I owned every original, your EP included, I needed to hear these for myself. It was well worth the money. I really had forgotten what an innovator you were, and the style diversity afforded you as an instrumentalist, vs. going the traditional front man vocalist route. Jeff Beck's career has spanned decades as has yours, just for this reason. Best to you. Cheers.
