BRO AL - The FX 500 is a little box of magic. It has comp, reverb, delay, distortion (that i don't use) , EQ ( 5 band I think) , Flange, and I think that's it. It has stereo out and is fully MIDI programmable. It works well with my MP-1. It does tend to be a bit noisy.

I would have to say the big point is that most people don't say they play because of beck or johnson or guy. They play 'cause they heard jimi. And no ONE person sounded or sounds like jimi. He blended all the above and created his sound. I think one thing that gets looked over was that he was a musician. Not just some guy who was good at guitar. Unfortunately, he lived the r&r lifestyle. So anytime you look at history you have to look where it changed direction. One point where this happened is at jimi.

As a side Buddy Guy portland aug. 15 yeah!!

DO THE STU - It makes for some intersetrin' internal conversations. Do I fill the fridge with food and eat good this month, or... do I eat Top Ramen for three weeks and get a new wah pedal?

Bloody decisions, bloody decisions!!

PREZ - (long sigh) Ok , i'v come to realize that we are not going to agree on this nor is this going to go away. So, I understand your point on Vai crediting Frank. That makes sense they were two peas in a pod. - strange birds. However Vai doesn't play any Zappa covers in his set. He does play Hendrix. Coincidence?

Obviously Johnson, through chronology alone, couldn't have been influenced by Hendrix. My point was that if you trace influences back more people, not just big names, give credit to Hendrix than the others. Including people outside of rock.

Tonni Iomi is going to influence any play who likes that darker sound whether they realize it or not, but Tonni doesn't cross genres as much as Hendrix does.

And Page, well we don't want to start that aguement. Suffice it to say ..He was a good songwriter. I personally never got the whole Zepplin thing. That's my dad. I definately wouldn't put Page down as a great PLAYER, but a very good writer.

I hope that clarifies. It's good to see you sticking to your guns, but let's move on to something new like Meatloaf's influence or the influence of the BeeGees.

Have a good day.

Matt

MICHELLE - Absofuckin'lutely!! I'm originally from the San Fran area. The East Side. Oaktown. Go Raiders!! Anyway. I grew up listening to them and actually had some personal ties to a few of the original members. Lenny Picket was their tenor player in the early days and is now the music director for Sat. Night Live. He is a motha'. If you like the James Brown, Sly and the family Stone vibe T.O.P is a must have.

962 - One thing I remember that Joe said at the Portland in-store was that he used a heavy pick and tried to pick as lightly as possible.

Through my own noodling I came to use 3mill. picks and a lite touch and have no pick thump so I think that is your answer.

Also, Joe talked about using your pick it different angles, using different sides, and at different places up and down the neck to create notes of different textures.

Hope that helps.

MIKE B - A tip from married man to married man. The D. Krall is good to have in the "Mood" stack.

As far as listening to other genres of guitar players, of course! That is what moves you forward. and not only guitarists but other instruments as well. Sax playesr are great for long legato lines. Charlie Parker, Kenny G aaagghh just kidding!!! Piano players are good for learning new voicings and new ways to get from one chord to another.

JS_JS - the first thing you have to do to be able drive at 18 is make to 18!!! The roads on the Olympic aren't the straightest. Take it easy.

DEATH CUBE - Do you live Cleveland? I I heard that river is nice and Brown.

COErules - It looks like the main difference is in the Pick-ups. the 1000 has a DiMarzio PAF Pro (H) Neck PU

1200 has a DiMarzio PAF-Joe Neck PU

I think that's it.

JAZZY - For me a songwriter is more associated with popular music. A composer is more like John Williams (the Bach,Beethoven of our time), where your composing for an orchestra, symphony, or smaller combinations of these instrumentations.

SLANSHROOM - My first memory, hmm. I was four. I got my first guitar for X-mas. It was a short scale acoustic. Iplayed that guitar for eight years untill I got my first electric (a Les Paul copy) I still have both of those, The acoustic is soooo beat up it is basically unplayable. My father-in-law keeps telling me to "Get rid of that thing." and I politely tell him to stick his opinion up his ass. Your first time is the one you remember your whole life.

JOEMAN9 - Being that you're underage you may want to look into volunteer work. One thing I did as a young tyke was learn some old standards (increasing your musical knowledge and understanding) and play at some of the rest homes. The people loved it. They would sing along and some would dance and it gave me a good feeling that i was able to bring a smile to someone's face. There are always places looking for voluteers and it is also something that you can get academic credit for and looks great on college applications. Hope that helps.

SLANSHROOM - Nice tune. I like the bending into the right note from 1/2 below and all the different tones. Listened to allmthe tunes, especially like 'Feels Like Home.'

JAZZY BOY - Classical music has always been its own thing. As today the general population doesn't listen to it. Popular music now I would equate to folk music then. Just my personal thoughts.

DRAGONCHILD - TYPO, TYPO,TYPO!!! I was curious how far you were from Malmö. There is an interesting building going up there that I have bee following. It's called Turning Torso and designed by a very interesting architect that BROTHER AL knows of (his work, the James Joyce Bridge in Dublin) named Calatrava. Anyway, beautiful building.

JOEMAN9 - Lots of jazz standards.' A 'train, Someone to watch over me, stuff like that. A good resource would be your grandparents. I got some good ides from mine. Basically songs that were popular post-depression . I'll get some titles for you if your interested, but it will be a couple days, finals next week.

DELFINOPIE - That was a horrible story. Best of luck with that man. Headphones??

PREZ - John Mayer... John friggin' Mayer!!! Holy shit, I hate that guy!!! Yea, he doesn't get because he sucks. What the hell does he know about playing the guitar? AAGGHH, I need a drink already and its only 7:15 am. Well at least I'm fired up and ready for the day.

TASTEY - I had forgottin' someone metioned Winger. I always liked Reb Beech and actually still listen when I'm feeling nostalgic.

MIKESB - Thanks for the info. I had no idea that Reb was playing w/ Whitesnake. I saw Whitesnake back when Vai played with them and Coverdale had all his screams prerecorded it was kinda lame. But a good show none the less.

2297 - Sorry bud, I didn't realize you were waitin' on a response. Let me go back and look..Tick ,tock (repeat)... Ok I'm back. I don't know much about the amp you're runnin' so i'll move to the geetars. I have always liked PRS, I just haven't been able to justify 2G's for an axe. I may have to try the JS models again I'm so used to the Wizard neck that the JS's feel wierd. How do you like it? Do you play the JS or the PRS more?

TO ALL - I just wanted your thoughts and prayers for tomorrow. My band is auditioning singers. Everyone knows that Amer. Idol process and all the people that don't make the cut. Give me patients and I'll post a review manana.

Nighty night.

DELPHINO - I'm playing catch up (56 posts) but I have never needed anything bigger than my Peavey twin 12. That goes for small halls to 10,000 seat amphitheater. If there was a need for more volume we just miked it. That's all that happens at a big show anyway.

PREZ - Prince

MARIMARI - Why settle for the a six pack when you can have the whole keg ?

TO ALL - And now another addition of "Sorry man, but no, you cannot sing." As some of you know my band was holding AAGGHH-ditions yesterday. I only have one question. Is it that hard to know you are NOT ON PITCH? Holy crap. So, suffice it to say we are STILL looking for a singer. If anyone one knows a 3/4 good singer-that can take some of the load off me-and let me play more guitar-that lives in the Portland area, Speak up now!

Back to the books, only 4 days left of studying, woo hooo!!!
