roid - A lot of times if there are no dots on the face of the neck, there are dots on the top edge of the neck. Check and see if that is the case. Having the dots is handy but eventually you just learn where to put your hands. No different than a violinist or cellist.
never_good_enough You were very close. A hamonic minor will be like playing in the key of C but with the raised 7th of G#. For C HM you will be in the relative Major mode, Eb, which gives you C D Eb F G Ab Bb C. Therefore if you raise the 7th you get B natural, and the world is right again. Here is a pretty good site with all kinds of scales for you.

Keniko - No prob. Gotta love the internet!!
As far the C# scale I believe Clarky's point was that the correct spelling for the C# major scale is actually C# D# E# F# G# A# B# C#.
Where B# and C have the same tone not unlike G3 and Ab. But in order spell chords out right you need to write it out with the B#. Ain't theory fun. Look at G# Harmonic minor (if I'm doing this right) you get G# A# B C# D# E F## G#. Woo hoo! F double sharp, what the hell!! I love music.
Don't forget to practice your Coltrane changes.

Keniko Nothing in particular. I just got a computer with these programs on them and was curious how people liked them. I am new to the whole home recording thing.

Fireman - Since I've met your wife I bet she doesn't know you posted that does she?!!! ( I may put those up at my desk) LOL
962 - I think you'll find that a lot of the minor scales are related to others. The altered scale comes to mind first. Love that over V7 chords. Anyway, it's nice to hear you "getting it." This will make that much better of a teacher.

962 The altered scale is a Jazz scale tyhat is used over a V7 chord. in C it would look like this *C-Db-Eb-E-Gb-Ab-Bb-C* So breaking it down you would have the b9, #9, 3rd, b5, b13, and the dom 7th. It's the 7th mode of the melodic minor.
if you want to bury yourself in jazz theory look here for more.

There is a lot on this site. Be forwarned. Great site though.

Yoda, PhyrgDom - That is interesting about the colors. I have known some people with perfect pitch and they say the same thing only in regards to notes. That each note has a different color associated with it making it easy to distinguish it from others. The brain is an interesting thing. There is also a reference page that I have with the different scales and modes and how they are perceived. Like, Cm is the saddest sounding of all the minor scales. I'll see if I can find it.

Cheese - I thought you had a bit thicker skin than that. You have been nothin but nice top everyone on the board and I would not do anything to deliberately hurt your feelings. Apparently I have and I am sorry for that. Please accept my apologies as I was just teasing. Hope this finds you well and lifts your spirits back up.
Not always knowing the boundries,
Matt

Jason - You can tune to any chord but on that is used is DADGAD. you can get some cool voicings. If you are up to it try all different chords like tune it to an open +9 chord and see what happens. Sounds like fun I may do some of that this summer. Joe has a song that he tunes the guitar funny in order to get the chord voicing. I don't remember the name. Have fun!!
