MegaBoyd: had to watch the Show Of Hands video after that!! I was there! And it was the last time I saw em :(

NonSmoker:: reasons aside, I thought Joe might wanna know. I reckon I would :-) but news that it's partial - hmmmm pretty sad really. How can DZ be short of cash? oh, better not go there ;-) Again, pretty sad really.... to have your unquestionably iconic name tarred by such an act.... oh wait... we should be careful. It's just opinion, after all - Jimi was Jimi, and nothing can change that. Frank was Frank, and nothing can change that either. If they are house-cleaning at Zappa-Central then let em ;-) but I think I'd put my money on your opinion ;-)

Mr Nick: Not so. There is a Bb in F major, no A#, whether it's in "standard" notation or not, there isn't an A# in F major.

also, you *can* fit an A natural and an A# on the same line in standard notation, btw (even an Ab if you wanted to) - just put an accidental in front of the note. If there are no sharps or flats in the clef, though, chances are it's in C Major or one if its modes.

Later, Dave

Paul: thanks for that, although, even on a guitar, when you're talking about keys and shit A# and Bb are still not the same note :-). Interesting info though... definitely food for thought, and thanks for warning the guys about double sharps ;-)

Benny: you're right - ignorance can be bliss at times (EVH can be a good example of that), but where the theory goes, the analness (anality?) suits me sometimes.... but I like it :-)))))

and now, people, back to bed for me........ buenos nochas mein froinds and welcome to la villa strangiato................

/\/\ike: yeah I was watching the Show Of Hands video (again!) last night, and I remember Alex singing in the intro from the show, and being annoyed that on the video they cut out the vocal and put that message on the screen! D'oh! I love the time changes in that track man... soooo cool.

Narface: I have one built into my Behringer V-Amp2, and I don't think I could live without one now! Noise gates are truly unsung heroes IMHO... great for Diamond Darrell stuff too - really gets your signal to shut the hell up whrn you're not playing! ;-)

njbeast: as well as what Nick said, you may have an iffy jack socket. It could be inside (soldering) or outside (the little nut). Check all leads & sockets in your signal chain. Try a different guitar if you can, and try to use just one lead at a time (no FX) to see if you can find the culprit. Fingers crossed!

Now for some coffee.... :-)

YMob: absolutely we're serious! Ab and G# may be the same pitch but they're not the same note. Clarky's post earlier today describes it very well. Read it a few times if you need to, and ask away if you have questions!!!.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to play Lydian #2 without it sounding too Eastern.... laterz Dave

Dave Gruska: sorry dude, but I'm on a Rush thing at the moment... if you're interested there's a book about them that I found very interesting by a guy called Bill Banascowitz (I know that's spelled wrong), and I can't even remember its name! D'oh! Anyway, I'm sure someone else will have the details, but it's a good entertaining and revealing read. It only goes up to something like Hold Your Fire (unless he did a later version), but it's a good read nontheless.
A book about Joe'd be so cool! We don't have a FAQ here, so Austin could change his name to "BuyTheBook" rofl. But I agree - it'd be nice to get into Joe's head and see how his life is - I always like to know what "people" are like - I remember reading that Joe likes (or liked) to go food shopping because the fresh food energises him. Things like that fascinate me much more than "what scale did you use on....?", but then again I'm weird ;-)

locust7: Check your comments page

Avarice: Can I read about Steven Seagal on that site too? lol. Good to see you back stirring it up duder :-)

MegaBoyd and Dave G: thanks Boyd! It is indeed called Visions! I guess it's out of print :-( but you can read a little about it here and I guess Amazon can try and find a used one..... and the guy's name is Bill Banasiewicz

Megaboyd: no worries, when you're ready. I think I have the whole show, although I may be missing a track or two, but something's better than nothing ;-)

kinger: yep - TTSTTTS only applies to the major scale. I have a feeling Clarky has some wonders up his sleeve, though, so you won't have this much trouble with the modes, and probably the minor scales too ;-) hang in there.....

dragonchild: is that the one with the story of Tipper Gore? And the start of the whole AudioGalaxy / Napster thing? If so, yeah that's a good read! I read it on the way back from Atlanta last year, very funny, very entertaining :-)

iambic: nice article. I don't know your age, but I guess your English teacher is more forgiving with spelling than mine was ;-) also, two children??????

Austin:BuyTheBook, by Austin Lewis lol ;-) happy "birthday"

OK it's very late here (3.10am), and I have Hemispheres blasting loud!!!!! Never Turn Your Back On A Monster!

new post.... I was emailing a mate today (hi r6rocker) about this, and after listening to Circumstances and The Trees I have to tell you all a thought I've had for along time now..... I firmly believe that Geddy Lee is a hyper-intelligent mega-being from a distant planet. I'm serious.
Even Mike Keneally's rhythm section isn't as tight as Ged and Neil... nor for that matter is a beggar's wallet or a nun's... well let's not get into that ;-)

dragonchild: no I don't think the Napster thing is in there, but I believe Tipper Gore started it all off after the Parental Advisory nonsense. Man she must be bored in her life.

Narface: yeah buzz is so annoying! I find using batteries in effects instead of power supplies helps, but it can get expensive! Maybe you could try and get hold of a parametric EQ and dial in a deep cut at 50Hz - that should get rid of modt of your mains-related buzz. Your own frequency for mains might be slightly different there in HK though. Boss do a noise suppressor (an NS-something I think), so you might want to try that too. I think there are (expensive) power boards you can get with filtering built in too. Try searching google for guitar effects buzz - it happens to the best of us ;-) Good luck!

clarky: isn't vii diminished? I understand fully why it could be called minor flat 5, but have never heard it called that. m7b5 for 7th chords, yeah, but i always saw the basic triad as dim???? tia. Dave

/\/\ike: yeah I have Fever Dream. Good ol' Mike Varney!!! Richie used to almost strangle the notes out of his guitar back then (and wasn't he 19 at the time or something?!?!)! And y'know, he used 11s on that album! Man I don't ever wanna shake hands with that guy! It's almost like people used to describe Phil Collins when he started vocals for Genesis - they said he sounded more like Peter Gabriel than Peter Gabriel did (lol), I think in some ways Richie sounds on that album more like Steve Vai than Steve Vai did at the time!!!!

Clarky: I found out a little about it....

The Lydian Chromatic Concept establishes the second
degree of a Lydian scale as being the primary location for dominant seventh chords. So the scales will all have C as their second degree.

Bb Lydian (Bb, C, D, E, F, G, A, Bb)

Bb Lydian Augmented (Bb, C, D, E, F#, G, A, Bb)

Bb Lydian Diminished (Bb, C, Db, E, F, G, A, Bb)

Bb Auxiliary Diminished (Bb, C, Db, Eb, E, F#, G, A, Bb)

Bb Auxiliary Augmented (Bb, C, D, E, F#, G#, Bb)

It sounds really cool! But the book's really expensive :( I think I'll see if my local library can get a copy, and then maybe order one of the previous editions used
Cheers, Dave
PS It was George Russell :-)

Thanks, Dave
