Welcome back Sharon!! Y'know, the first time I read that about Andy's guitar teacher I thought you were dissing the teacher rofl!!!!!
Hey everyone I could do with a little help! Has anyone got Joe's Guitar Secrets book? I've lost mine and I could really do with the notes for the Dimished Chord Relay exercise. Please, could someone just type it out quickly and email it? Something easy like E3 G3 D2 A4 would be fine (ie string & fret). Thanks guys!

Mobil: check out the discography link at the top of your page. You know it makes sense ;-)
seleccao: I guess if there's nothing new on the vai website (I never go there myself), there's nothing to report. Maybe one of the mailing lists would keep you updated? Guys? Any ideas? News? Gossip? HTH Dave

Mobil: I never really saw guitar playing as the kind of thing that anyone could be "better than" anyone else at. A couple of the guys on here have heard my CD - shout for Naty and r6rocker - they'll give you a more honest opinion (I hope!!!!)
My main guitars are things I've made myself - I'm left handed, and I dislike the weight of a left handed guitar, so I tend to cut up right handers till they fit my body LOL!!!
What about you? What do you play? How long you been playing?
edit If you're into theory and are having trouble, you came to the right place!!! Clarky is doing a session on scales, harmonisation, modes, etc, and it seems to be going down a treat! Enjoy! Cheers, Dave

Well, it's not half as warm as it was yesterday, so I think I'll take my kids to the park (you gotta love being out of work for some reasons lol). Later all, Dave
edit: they're dogs, but I call em my kids :-)

Nick: it's good old Trent Reznor. Such a wonderful song. Any Nine Inch Nails fans got the UK DVD? Did you find the easter eggs? I can't get any of em to work :-(
Car Conversation: I got rid of a Ford Mondeo earlier this year, 1.8 turbo diesel. The insurance was £800 a year, even with no claims! It's a rip I tell ya! Now I drive a battered old Citroen BX16 estate. It cost me £170!!!
Invigor (I think) - yeah WinNT was the first "real" Windows OS. All 32 bit. And if you want some blue, just nick a guitar... worked last time lol j/k!!! Cynical? Me? Nah!!!
Later, hope you're all enjoying your weekend. Dave

Plum Loco: that's pretty mellow! Good stuff.
XCrystalPlanetX: Well I'm not Clarky (I think he's busy at JemFest tonight), but if you check my site the Guitar Reference pages 1 and 3 are up (OK I know they look crap). There's the formulae for major scale modes on Page 3, and "normal" scale formulae on Page 1. I hope this helps you out a bit. www.sharpfour.com.

XCrystalPlanetX:OK dude, no worries. I don't want to tread on Clarky's toes, cos he's got this thread going now, but...... if you go to Page 1 on my site, there's the formula for the major scale - TTSTTTS, so pick a key and write out its major scale. Then go to page 3, pick a mode (or all of em!), and apply its formula to the major scale you wrote out. Let's say we use G Major - G A B C D E F# G. Then pick a mode, say Lydian. The formula says the only difference between major & lydian is that the 4th degree is sharpened (1 2 3 #4 5 6 7 1), so all you do to get a G Lydian is sharpen the fourth degree of G Major - G A B C# D E F# G. Eagle eyes might notice that this is the same notes as D Major, but starting and ending on a different note, but that's something inherent in the wonders of the modal system. Don't think of it is D starting on a different note, thinnk of it as G Lydian in its own right. I hope this helps a little more - it's time to eat down here in south London!!! I didn't spend ages on this cos of Paul's ongoing thread, but I'm pretty sure there'll be more in depth discussion when he gets to that part. Modes are wicked - there's a lot more to it than you might think!
Good luck, have patience. Later, Dave

That was discussed a coupla weeks ago. You won't find sharps and flats in the same key. F# and Gb are the same pitch not the same note.
If your "normal" third is say G# and you need to flatten it, it'll become G, and if your "normal" 6th is E and you need to flatten it, it'll become Eb.
Go back a bit to the conversation Clarky and Mr Nick had, I reckon you'll get your head round it soon enough. If not, shout again!! Good luck.
EDIT: I found it (finally!). Have a look at posts from Sep 25 onwards. Later!

Clarky: good to hear you had a good time! Hey earlier I tried your G everywhere thing, and was there a typo re: the top E? If I play three notes a string up to the B, the highest note I play on the B is G, not F#, and so for the turnaround I play A and B, not G and A. :-/
XCrystalPlanetX and Mr Nick: argh! I don't think you'll be mentally scarred for life if you see them as the same note, but (man this is hard)... in the key of F there are no sharp notes and one flat note - Bb. There are no sharps in F Major so it has to be a Bb. Let's use third fret G string for this note (yes I know there are others!) Now then, this pitch also appears in (amongst others) the F# major scale as the 3rd degree. But now it's an A# because there are no flattened notes in F# Major. Same pitch, different name. Is that easier? Or worse? :-(
EDIT: Oh yeah! Thanks JB!!! :-D
