XCPX: don't worry. Sometimes things plant themselves in your brain, fester away on their own and one day they let themselves be known - you knew it all along but one day you just realise that you did :-)

Joe quote of the day: Knowledge is power.

XCPX: does it have to be an amp? Did you see my post about the Behringer V-Amp2? Feel free to spread your answer over several posts ;-)

death cube k: see above ;-) I hook it straight into the mixer & computer. It's an amazing piece of kit. I don't play live, so it suits me just fine, and a cheap PA (or the house PA) would let me play live with full control over my sound :-)

Invigor: yeah, aren't they the coolest? I have quite a bit of Behringer kit here, and for the price the quality is outstanding!!! I used to have my studio go through a pair of ridiculously expensive (but on long term loan to me) Meridian speakers, and man what a sound!!!!! Everything on my CD (apart from the acoustic) went through that baby. You can have it, but you'd have to pry it from my cold dead fingers first ;-)

Matt: interesting observation. Like I said, I don't play live so I can't comment on that part, but i *do* know that no amount of ProTools (or similar) equipment will get you a good guitar sound - ProTools is a recording device / system, nothing more nothing less. OK plugins are available all over the place, but more often than not they're mastering plugins, and the amp sims suck big time. If you put crap in, you'll get crap out. All they do is record it. Granted sticking a decent mike in front of a decent amp, fired by a decent player & a decent guitar is still arguably the best way to the coolest recorded sounds, but for me (and you!) amp sims rule!!!!

EDIT - Mr Nick: that's the one! Same string same fret, but in the context different note. Like if you go shopping in your Porsche 911 it's an A to B machine. If you go cruising for birds on a Friday night in it it's a trapping / copping utility ;-) Sorry for the blatant sexism. I don't support such behaviour, I was just trying to support an idea ;-)

Mr Nick: you got it right when you said "same pitch..different name...Gb=F#". Pick 6th fret D string as your chosen Gb/F#. There are no flat notes in A Major, but 6th fret D string is there - as the 6th degree. It must be something sharp (there are no flats in A), and so it's G#. But if you were in Ab Major that note is there too! If you started on the 6th string it would be the 1st octave = Ab. There are no sharps in Ab, so it must be Ab (ie the root). IOW, it's the same pitch (in all its octaves) = same string, same fret, but, depending what key you're in, its place serves a completey different purpose.

HTH matey! now for some sleep.......

Plugin conversation: The interaction between guitar and amp is not present with plugins. Try playing something muted, like the verse section to Ozzy's "I Don't Know" clean, then applying the most expensive amp sim plugin you can find. I'd put money on it that it still sounds like a wasp in a jam (jelly) jar.

Naty: Where've you been bambina? The Tuesday night jam? Nah - I'm too shy for that :-(

OK, it's far too early for me to be not in bed, later! Dave

XCPX: I got the same thing, except on the B string I was playing 5 7 8 and then 5 and 7 on the E, cos Clarky's notes said you play three notes on each string except the top E. It sounds like I misunderstood and you got it right ;-)

/\/\ike: thanks man. It's a shame I've had to put a fee on the CD but I'm really getting low on cash being out of work etc. Thanks for the comments :-)

R6R: It sounds like you *have* been paying attention, and that minor mode stuff in your inbox should keep you out of trouble for a while!! heh heh >:-D

XCPX: Sounds like you're getting the hang of it. Stick with it. One thing you might want to combine with your X Anywhere work is to work out where all the notes in your chosen scale are on one string and then only play that string. Do that for a while then change string. Once you've done all six, play two at a time, then three, etc. Before you know you'll be all over the place and still in key :-)

Later all, Dave

XCPX: I see what you're thinking (sorry to jump in Paul), what you thought is a pattern in the true sense of the word. Do you have a neck blank with notes on it? The idea is to stay in the key of G, but (for the second one) start at A on the 5th fret bottom E, and play three notes per string, turning round with two notes on the top E (these would be B & C on the 7th & 8th frets). I'm just about to post up a neck blank on my site, will post here when it's done.
Later, Dave

EDIT: Page is now up at www.sharpfour.com, click on Neck Blank - Right Hand.

Airdy: are you playing the C on the third fret A string? You might want to combine the 5th fret G string with your wah, Joe does it on the DVD. They're both Cs after all, and when it's feedback you get the availability of the extra harmonics of the octave. HTH, Dave

Clarky and other cack-handers: the left hand neck blank is now up. Some of you probably won't need one, but I REALLY could have done with one (a lefty one) 20 odd years ago!!!!

XCPX: glad it helped! Yeah, print one at school, photocopy it a million times and get a highlighter. You can use these things for all sorts of things!

Naty: new camera? Cool! Glad you're still alive! I was worried! That's a nice pic you have there, but I admit I'm no expert. Got any more?

Cheers everyone, this is a cool place indeed.... some blue might be nice though ;-) Dave

I started playing my brother's strat copy upside down (still strung right handed). I found power chord were easier played over the top of the neck LOL. Eventually I got my own, but I was so used to the balance of a righty I've played them ever since, although nowadays I get (right handed) bodies from stores like Warmoth and cut a little away so I can reach the top frets - my fingers certainly aren't as long as Jimi's :-) I have one left handed guitar and it feels out of balance to me :-/ the rest feel just fine, although I never named any of them

I've had a pack / stick / tube (!!!) of FastFret for about 350 years sitting on the shelf. I think I used it a couple of times... seemed perfectly damp to me ROFL. Maybe I'll check if it's disintegrated or not. Mr Sheene always seemed to be better (before I put the strings back on of course) :-/

/\/\ike: I'd really apperciate that ;-)

Cack Handed Thing: I heard that too - your dominant hand does the neck stuff. Makes perfect sense to me, but stupidly I didn't try it that way back when I was, ahem, younger, so I've been playing things upside down ever since LOL.

R6R: Working? ROFL. Check your email EDIT, also, I've got probably about 30 effing hours' worth of unfinished stuff on about a zillion four track tapes! Thanks for reminding me!!!!

Sharon: Good point. I didn't go, but I had a ticket for Prince at Manchester last night. Prices started at £50! And I bet you wouldn't be able to take your high heels to the stage door and get em signed afterwards ;-)

Axmanjr: it seems you came to the right place at the right time! Keep your eye on Clarky's posts, I think he's heading towards modes pretty soon. But as a taster, if you already know what they are, play them, get familiar with them, and decide what they mean to you - why take someone else's word that phrygian sounds kinda Spanish when you might think it sounds like something else ;-)

Good luck, Dave

Austin: so many posts! I never even really noticed! People were saying things and I was just writing away LMFAO! Thanks for the DVD link. It seems I *really* have the UK DVD - most of the easter eggs aren't there :-( I got to see Manson & the NIN band doing The Beautiful People but that was about it :-( ah well better get it next time I'm Stateside ;-) and I agree (thanks for confirming / denying) - Mr Luini should have his own little button!!!! And guess what - I *only just* noticed the correlation between Austin and Nitsua.... so yeah I can be a little slow at times LMFAO!!!!! Later, Dave

Man! Sometimes I'm grateful for disruptive sleep patterns!!!! I just saw "Is This Love", which makes me think John Sykes for G3!!!!

Other goodies: OK so they aren't so great, but I always loved this tune.....

Tomorrow never knows
What it doesn't know too soon

GINOAMES They're Pearly Gates. Joe said he preferred the way they sounded on that particular guitar to the usual DiMarzio combo. Of course it seems to be academic now as that guitar ("Pearly") has been nicked by some eunuch.
