Guitarmiester ~ I'll tell you something I heard while waiting for Joe's in-store appearance here in Boston: the guy says, I always wait until the day of the show to get my tickets and I've always gotten great seats up front ~ he went through ticketmaster, says you have to be persistent, but it pays off ~ so I've got a hunch these ticket places don't sell the best seats right away ~ after talking to said fan, I sez to myself, SELF, let's try getting a better seat the day of the show, then sell the other ticket at the gate ~ or I could buy the 100 package if I wanted to do that for the DP show ~ my thought was, naw, wait for the Evening With show, that's the one I want to be UP CLOSE for :)

fair nuff?

Edit: p.s. I was gonna say something sooner in response to some other posts, but every time this tiny voice inside me said, "don't give away this secret!" ~ but I cannot hold onto it in good conscience in light of recent "events" ...peace...

Delfino ~ I think it ROCKS that (some of) Joe's "BE$T" fans will be able to buy tix to some of the best seats ~ yeah, it's expensive and I won't be going platinum anytime soon :(

ovation ~ hey man, long time between greets :-) ... 1) if the premium packages had NOTHING to do with Joe, I'd be very surprised. You don't expect him to lie to his best fans by blaming the venue and washing his hands of this, do you? It's posted on HIS SITE after all (which he hosts at his own expense, do I need to remind those assembled?) 2) I wouldn't give JON credit for keeping the backstage pass giveaway going, but rather, give him credit for letting the fans know what JOE's policy is ~ friendly waves ~ ~ ~

Good Music is the best religion on earth ~ Amen!

Phydeaux ~ what sweet pictures! got my endorphins for the day, looking at those, thanks! she is SO beautiful :-)

Noppa ~ I can understand you wanting the best experience of the sound ~ that's my second choice if unable to be near the stage is to be near the soundboard ~ I know a rabid satchfan in Arizona who is into making tapes during shows ~ naturally, he's gonna want to find the best sound ~ but for ME making a tape would spoil the entire experience of attending a live performance, and this has a lot to do with wanting to be as close as possible to the artist during that performance moment and showing my appreciation with my enthusiastic participation (dancing, shouting, clapping, applause, etc) ... binoculars would be choice 2.5 :-)

Zenfish ~ "tired/disillusioned" ~ apparently I was depressed :(

I felt myself slipping away from cyberspace ~ but I remain still semi-connected ~ this is problematic at times

Ree ~ Joe talks about the making of the Peavey JSX in the Musician's Friend interview (Part 4) http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=040601122150192223243005219681/g=guitar/content/doc_id=93068

Zenfish ~ "Well, to talk about JOE, a lot people now are able to emulate his technics. But the melodical classic blues is his personal feeling, his own prodigy. The Joe genius secret dances in all his melodic stuff, not on his technical level." ~ YOU GOT IT, THIS IS IT RIGHT THERE, MAN! ...peace...

Joe! nice to see that BLuuuuuuu :-) welcome back

um ... *ahem* ... uh, um, ok here goes: it has come to my attention The Queen needs to work on her delivery ~ hence, I apologize to everyone for coming on a bit strong recently ~ I still have the same opinion, but I respectfully disagree with those who are unhappy with the premium package deals for various reasons ~ I wish I had MORE money I could throw in Joe's direction ~ but nothing I could ever pay could equal the gift of his art ~ the gifts he gives to us are ... priceless ~ so at the end of the day, it's not the money, it's the JOY ~

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ 90mph JOY ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

~faye

Edit: did I just fold the page??? wtf???

Edit 2: it's that LINK to part 4 ~ sorry!

Long-Lost Greetings, SatchFriends~!

I've been absent nursing a stoooooopid cold virus, and some depression and other emotional traumas from work blehhhhhh :P

Zenfish ~ thanks for your words of encouragement *smiles* ~ I will have some stuffs to say to you re ITLIS vs SBM Just You Wait <grin>

Marimari ~ I just read your post yesterday, and I wrote a response but was too exhausted to post, so I’ll dig it up and send it tonight ~ ~ ~ (*friendly waves*)

When the news of Reagan’s death broke yesterday, I found myself in a time warp, seeing all that news footage from the eighties ~ a turbulent decade in my life, one I would not choose to “delete” even if it were possible, but would never choose to live over again ~

Austin’s favorite quote reminded me how powerless it felt to know our two countries had nuclear warheads pointed at each other ~ I still can’t quite decide if I think what he said was funny or not-so-funny ~ oh sure, we all know he was joking, and it would be unsportsmanlike to point out his “humorous” jab showed his unvarnished contempt for “The Evil Empire” and a cold indifference to the horrors of nuclear confrontation ~ “haha”

During the Clinton impeachment feeding frenzy I often tried to imagine how I would feel if this were happening to someone like Reagan or Bush the first, in a (mostly unsuccessful) attempt to keep myself from purely partisan prejudices

I’m sure the news would have saddened me a lot more if Reagan hadn’t suffered from Altzheimers, aka The Long Good-bye ~ the man we “knew” as president was lost to us many, many years ago ~ what we lost yesterday was the physical shell ~ may he Rest In Peace

So I’m back to work, and maybe back to posting, who knows?

...PeaceToAll…

Strange Beautiful Ponderings on the theme of Love in Space

[[..though I refer to Joe in the third person, Joe, this post is also for YOU: my hero..]]

Zenfish wrote: “I know that some of us, like ovation1, fayne, clarky, and others love Joe for his rock'n'roll riffs.”

I will say this about that: Joe is a genius creator of songs ~ the song can never be limited to the “riffs” but includes the ~MeLoDy~ and in this regard Joe is a True Master and Creative Genuis, the way he blends the rocknroll riff with Melodies that break your heart, make your spirit soar to the skies and Other Planets, and get your blood pumping so hard your foot can’t stay off the gas, you can’t stay in your seat you gotta get up and dance and ‘fore you know it, that 90mph joy is bursting out all over the place and the smiles won’t stop.

The riff is nothing without the melody, and the melody is nothing without the rhythm, both of which are settings that showcase the guitar solo, but the solo would be nowhere without the song to reference ~ it’s all of a piece, so please no one misunderstand that I’m hooked on riffs alone.

++++++++++++++++

As for whether ITLIS is a step forward from SBM or not I think it is impossible to make any judgement APART from our tastes.

It never ceases to amaze me the various reactions fans and others have to Joe’s different songs. For example, I was ALL EXICTED this latest cd had two vocals, yet one of my Joe-friends at my work didn’t like those songs AT ALL ~ so go figure! (sheesh!)

Have you ever had the experience of disagreeing with someone about any song and think, man, are you listening to the same song I’m listening to? Well, yes, of course it’s the same SONG , but we’re all listening with different EARS.

This much should be obvious, like Duh, everyone brings a unique set of expectations, preferences, musical training, past experiences with music, ie, a unique set of ears to their experience of Joe’s music, and this includes the normalization of the rabid-JoeFan-curve…

I never wrote-up my reactions to SBM, though I had plenty to say ~ I do think ITLIS is a better cd than SBM ~ even though I could find nothing “wrong” with SBM, it seemed somehow … um, maybe “tame” for lack of a better word, and I thought so even at the time of the release of SBM, but I couldn’t put my finger on why, and I still can’t.

I find SBM tame by comparison to ITLIS ~ but then again, it could be I was experiencing a valley in my fan-feelings and thus brought my own apathy to SBM ~ I can’t know for sure, but I suspect something similar is happening with those who aren’t as enamored of ITLIS, in terms of what the listener is bringing to the experience.

Can the listener’s own feelings totally explain whether one cd is or is not better? Certainly not, but this is where each listener’s unique set of preferences comes into play also. I don’t think I’ll ever like SBM better than ITLIS, even though I find it hard to explain why. It comes down to a matter of personal taste, something you can’t control or quantify, so better to stop trying, just accept it.

I will say this about SBM: the cd reminded me strongly of the very first thing I noticed about Joe’s music when I first heard NOTE, and that is his Attention To Detail ~ every song is very carefully crafted and produced ~ this much is unmistakable and remarkable in itself. I can HEAR it, and I can appreciate it.

I’ve come to completely trust Joe’s musical instincts ~ even when a cd strikes me as “tame” I still admire and savor every finely tuned nuance I hear within each song.

Hence, I respectfully disagree with Zenfish in terms of which cd is better, or more of a move forward ~ I vote for ITLIS, but hey, that’s just “me” [*smile*]

…peace…

Judgment / opinion / taste / preference

“the dictatorship of opinion” … what else is there? All judgments about music are subjective. Even those of seasoned music critics who have listened to a wide variety of music and music history (presumably!) in order to earn the right to pontificate to the lowly masses on the merits and demerits of this or that cd are still making a subjective judgment based on their unique listening equipment ~ there is no definitive judgment

I am quick to disclaim any ability to critique music based on sufficient musical experience ~ I know I like Satriani but beyond that I will say naught

I’m quick to defer to the judgments of others with more music under their belt ~ I’m just a humble unfrozen cavewoman SatchFan (don’t ask) ~ I know what I like and that’s all

Delfino ~ *meow* LoL

tetovo ~ _Reel Satriani_ is an inside peek at the making of JS95 aka The Red Album ~ you see Joe working with Nathan Lane, Maue Katche, Andy Fairweather Low, and producer Glyn Johns ~ numerous takes of “Luminous Flesh Giants” ~ hear about the first records ever purchased by each of the band ~ the birth of the song “If” ~ a fascinating peek inside the studio process -- the creative process -- it’s interesting, instructive, and it’s JOE in his element ~ I enjoyed it immensely, but then again, I’m just plain old hardcore ~ can't help it!

cheers, everyone! [[..*smiles*..]]

Zenfish ~ thanks for explaining about ITLIS vs SBM ~ I do understand your position better now ~ OF COURSE course you have the absolute right to express these thoughts ~ especially to Joe! ~ I never said you couldn't or shouldn't ~ I said we differ +respectfully+ in our opinions

"Big Bad Moon" is a classic and will never be surpassed ~ it hardly seems fair to compare Joe's latest vocals with that song ~ I'm just happy to hear him singing again ~ my opinion (still respectful of yours): "I Like The Rain" is a better song than "Ride" ~ I'll have to listen again to "Ride" to do the specific comparison

not to put words in your mouth, but I fear you'll hear these opinions and think, "Faye's an idiot; she knows nothing"

TSOD has grown on me, but over time I'm beginning to feel frustrated with the "k" sound of the wah ~ the annoyance meter is starting to quiver

ITLIS, Bamboo, Searching, these are the newest cLaSsiC Joe-tunes

Smiles and Friendly waves ~ ~ ~

Hi Gang, I couldn’t get in here yesterday all day!

Delfino ~ *meow* ~ great cat story! I’ve cleaned up a kitty chunk or two in my day ~ LoL

soul of distortion ~ Joe plays 7 string on SBM too ~ Mindstorm and Seventh String *smiles*

Clarky ~ I lived in LA for 11 years ~ if you’re used to seeing blue when you look up, count on that about 3-4 days out of every 365 ~ LA is really a collection of smaller places pretending to be one big place ~ if I could live anywhere in LA I would choose Santa Monica ~ a vehicle is a requirement, because everything is so spread-out it takes FOREVER to use public transportation ~ places I lived south of The Valley were Silverlake, Palms, Santa Monica, Fairfax, Venice, North Hollywood, and Echo Park ~ places I lived in The Valley included Van Nuys, and Northridge (they had a really bad earthquake there, after I left ~ whew!) ~ if you’re going there I suggest the other requirement (in addition to the vehicle) is a Thomas Brothers Street Guide ~ it contains complete maps of absolutely everywhere ~ don’t leave home without it! ~ cheers, mate!

Zenfish ~ thanks again for these new explanations ~ I would like to hear more about the “progressive” nature of SBM ~ do you mean from one song to the next on that cd, or do you mean the theme progressing from SWTA … CP to EOC to SBM? Thanks again for all these details ~ it does help me understand your position ~ smiles and friendly waves to you and Joelle ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

JOE ~ got to work early this morning and cranked up FIABD there at my desk ~ the new director came over to introduce himself and shake my hand ~ he asked what was playing, I indicated your name while gesturing to the cd insert you signed, hanging in my cube ~ he knew your name but hadn’t heard any in awhile ~ then later during the quick group gathering, he joked about me blowing the windows of his office out ~ everyone at work knows I’m a Total Satriani Fan ~ I’ve got The Phone Call on right now ~ love it!

…peace,everyone…

Hi Joe,

This morning I played some selected cuts from your new cd for one of my good friends visiting briefly ~ when we got done listening to “Searching” she commented how good your band is, how they follow your lead ~ when I played ITLIS, as the main melody starts-in, I heard her softly exclaim, “ohhhhhh” ~ (yeah, she gets it)

her overall comment was, “it’s like a facial for your brain”

Thought you might like to hear that *smile*

Everyone, I’m taking a breather from posting for now ~ I continue to lurk, off and on

Young Bernie ~ excerpt from Joe Satriani interview:

Guitar6: You used to teach guitar lessons for legends like Kirk Hammett and Steve Vai. Do you have any advice you'd like to give to teachers or students?

Joe Satriani: Sure; Learn every note everywhere on the guitar, learn every scale everywhere on the guitar, and learn every chord everywhere on the guitar...then we'll talk.

Hello to all friends in T2J-land :-)

TASTEY ~ LOL ~ good one!

marimari ~ hope you catch your flight ok! thanks for the "inside scoop" on meeting the band ~ sounds like a wonderful time was had by all ~ way to go!

Austin, I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth, but could it be that hypocrisy is a typical human failing? some might even call it human nature, but personally I wouldn't go that far ~ oftimes we are most unaware of our own faults, seeing only the faults of others, and oftimes those faults we see in others are actually our own worst faults ~ when it comes to hypocrisy, most are unaware until it's pointed out to them ~ please, can't we all just get along???

as for Robert Fripp's reviews, I can remember negative reviews for ALL of the 3rd G's ~ personally, I consider it disrespectful to post some blatantly negative comment about a guitarist JOE has PERSONALLY invited to tour WITH HIM ~ buy hey, that's just me, and folks are entitled to their opinions ~ honesty may be a virtue, but so is TACT

and that's all I can say

Alexandre ~ hello, friend! nice to see you ~ all is well here ~ this is the nicest weather we will see all summer ~ the trees are full and green ~ enjoy your day!

Noppa ~ don’t you dare leave us! Pretty please will you write to us your review? With sugar on top? *smile*

Trutina ~ I’m simply making a case for being respectful in the review ~ there are tactful ways of communicating ~ people tend to just spout-off what’s on their mind without thinking ~ I’m making the case people should consider their words and put themselves in the shoes of the listener

The best way to discourage negative posting behavior on T2J is to ignore it ~ otherwise it will “knit a sweater” in perpetuity
