Robert Fripp played the first time I saw Joe in concert
it may not be the type of music the G3 crowd expects, but neither was Adrian Legg, who I read reports was also booed by some fans (go figure!)
my original point (subsequently obscured by my comments regarding what I will or won't _personally_ say TO JOE about the 3rd G's) is that ALL of Joe's guests for G3 (except Vai) have gotten negative press from a sub-section of Joe's fans ~ I suppose this is to be expected, when John-Doe-Fan expects one thing and gets something else ~ "too loud"; "not good enough"; "too subdued"; "not worthy of sharing the same stage"; "doesn't fit" etc ~ I'm simply sharing a historical background I've noticed over the years ~
I'm encouraged by the positive comments I've read, and I hope fans will be respectful, even if their comments are negative ~
I disapprove of booing, but hey, that's just me
...peace,all...

long live the song
and the song inside the song
the words inside the soul of songs
the soul inside the song of streams
the streams to feed the singing trees
the trees that feed the song of flight
the flight of songs that reach the stars
the stars inside the soul of space
the space that bears the song inside
long live the song

good day to everyone in SatchLand~!
"9th" studio album doesn't include the original EP or Dreaming #11, as these are not an entire "album" but excluding "EOC" is just WRONG ~ as pointed out, this is Joe's "studio"
Time Machine contains previously unreleased Studio work
so go figure!

Greetings, Satchland~!
Finally, a chance to post~!
Zenfish ~ thanks for remembering me :)
I have some questions for you and anyone here on T2J about progressive music, and SBM. Without meaning to sound obtuse, I would like to further refine the definition of progressive, by looking at the following questions and providing examples from Joe's work:
o can a 12-bar ever be considered progressive?
o is a non-traditional time-signature always considered de facto progressive?
o can progressive be defined (in part) by non-standard harmonic structures, alternate tunings, dissonant chords, or preponderance of dissonance?
Lastly, would you go through SBM track-by-track and tell me what specifically you find progressive about each song? I'm truly curious.
Here is my first-draft (totally from memory, I"m at work) list of songs by Joe I think sound "progressive":
Flavor Crystal 7
Trundrumablind
With Jupiter in Mind
Cool #9
Luminous Flesh Giants
Killer Bee Bop
Echo
The Enigmatic
Memories
ultra_zone and Do The Stu ~ about the child's voice in the beginning of fiabd: I've always assumed this might be "kids say the darndest things" ~ an adult is apparently interviewing the child, and I believe they are discussing a parent or sibling getting ready for a date ~ I can't make out the first part, but I can clearly hear the child say, "...they get ready for each other" ~ then you can barely hear the adult saying, "what about afterwards?" and the child replies, "sometimes afterwards they still like each other, and sometimes they don't".
so, do I win something? LoL :-)
Hi to everyone

...Austin… thanks for your input ~ I agree this stuff is hard to define, that's why I ask for specific examples ~ I disagree about the 12-bar, but if you run across an example you can point to, speak up ~ I would also disagree about song lengths ~ would you call "Searching" progressive? ~ I did forget Woodstock Jam, but it's almost a no-brainer that anything atonal is progressive (like, WAY TOO progressive for me! LOL) ~ a lot of what I've heard of Vai's music could be called progressive
can you define "bluesy"? There's the traditional 12-bar, then there's the blues scale ~ what else? I suspect it's the kind of thing where "I know it when I hear it", am I right?
more questions for the ages:
What is Art?
What is Truth?
How can a song BE (or be called) "progressive" if it doesn't SOUND "progressive"?
…peace,everyone...

Hi Zenfish :) ~ this is an intellectual discussion ~ we start by a definition of terms ~ you described progressive in words, so I'm trying to compare my understanding with your words, and would like to hear your words linked up to examples ~ in this way we gradually understand each other's point of view, since the subject is so slippery and subjective
besides, you brought it up *friendly smile*
I'm interested in whatever anyone on T2J has to say about progressive music ~ I don't think of Joe as progressive, even though every album except ITLIS has had at least one song that makes me "stretch" ~ I consider this a huge clue those songs might fall into the progressive category

Hi Joe,
sorry to bring this up on your happiest of birthday's day, but I'm a wee bit frustrated...
Last time you had a listening parting for SBM, I had a terrible time getting a decent stream on my home computer (it's a dinosaur, and I'm on dial-up) ~ I finally abandoned the attempt, because Quicktime and my computer just didn't get along.
With your latest listening party, I was hoping to stream from my work where I have a fast connection ~ thing is, I work for a very conservative company and I can't just download software as I please ~ so I'm stuck once again with not being able to participate because you're only streaming thru Quicktime
Guess I'll have to wait until someone on the UnList rips it ~ I never did get to listen to all your song introductions for SBM ~ phoo
*sad face*
still your fan forever,
~faye

I really love ya baby but you're puttin me through the fire

if you'll happily pay an inflated ticket price for Row 6, why even bother with presales in the first place? Just wait a few weeks and get front and center tickets from a scalper. In a sense that's the same as getting these "premium" tickets.
I totally disagree. The diference in the case of the Premium tickets is
A. Joe is guaranteeing a specific set of rows in return for a specific price (something hard to guarantee if you use ticketmaster or scalpers)
and
B. there are additional VALUE ADDED BENEFITS such as T-shirts, photo's, backstage passes, etc
and
c. most importantly the dollars you shell-out got not to a scalper, but to the tour/Joe/Joe's organization.
Austin, I realize you're not a fan of the premium tickets packages, but you could at least recognize it's better FOR JOE if his fans purchase the ticket packages sold here at satriani.com over paying any similar amount to a blood-sucking scalper.
again I will say this: I wish I had MORE money I could throw in Joe's direction. I would buy the Platinum package in heartbeat if I had the dinero. I would buy the gold package for my family if I had the money. I would do this with ZERO regret, and have zero problem with Joe selling these on his this, his website.
+~The Queen Has Spoken~+
a belated HI to Alexandre :)
Hi to Zenfish and S4TCH BOOGIE ~ nice to see you post!

Welcome to T2J!
Here's what I think:
I don't play guitar, rather, I lurk here on T2J soaking up all the local color ~ I suspect the reason you're not getting a reply is those of us who don't play are aware there are many regulars here who also play Joe's songs, so what is there to "think" if we can't hear your playing, and the regulars here who DO play Joe's music would also like to hear your playing in order to tell you what they "think" ~ does that make sense?
I do think it is a wonderful thing to emulate Joe and play his songs if that brings you joy
it's all about the joy
...peace,everyone...
