here is what I set out to write about today, before the lawsuit controversy erupted:

I have been known to fall into a YouTube hole watching joe vid's (queuing them up one after another for as long my patience holds out, which can be hours on end) whether it be guitar tips, live vid's, interviews etc.

This morning it was ANDALUSIA and TIME MACHINE 2008 ~ watching the live performances helped me re-live (in an extremely reduced fashion) my own experience of hearing these songs in concert on the recent tour

Joe, I cannot thank you enough for Andalusia ~ such an incredible joy, not only to experience the studio recording, but to witness you deliver the song in live performance ~ and hearing Time Machine live (with that beautiful dreamy intro ~ahhhhhh~) this experience was beyond words ~ these two songs surpassed all expectations and have brought my fan feeling to a new level ~ I cannot help but stand in awe, suffused with ecstasy

~ thank you, Joe ~ thank-you Forever ~

...your humble fan...

The problem with the music theory vid from creativeguitars is he only shows why the chord progressions are similar (and tempo/meter are the same) NONE OF WHICH IS COPYRIGHT PROTECTED MATERIAL. What makes Joe's case is the MELODY, and I've yet to see someone write it out note for note in standard time signature treble clef fashion. I've noticed slight variances between the two, but I do think Joe's case is extremely solid or else the lawsuit would not have been pursued by Our Hero.

Totally with you, Joe!

...peace2all...

~Faye

p.s. and he states verbally the melodies differ and he was corrected in the comments so he takes it back there in the comments section.

here's a little quote (meaning, I didn't think to say this myself)

"if the book written about all that artists have suffered for their art fell on you from above, it would crush you"

Lawyer bill: $[XXXXX] dollars

Internet bill: $[xxxx] dollars

Coldplay download: $0.99

The love and support of your family, your friends, and your fans: Priceless

The truly wonderful thing about your music, Joe, is how it's so deep that it's totally beyond words.

something new:

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jv_vSNdPKP00gfIr10Tdh_5GhIJQD94VDRB80

In response to Coldplay's statement, Satriani's lawyer, Howard E. King, said Coldplay's public reaction was dramatically different from how the guitarist's claims were treated before the lawsuit was filed.

"We attempted to have a dialogue on this before we went public," King said. "We felt almost forced to file suit."

"As far as the 'coincidence,' ultimately that's for a jury to decide," he added.

King said it's common for musicians to be influenced by other works and incorporate it into their own, sometimes a little too closely.

But he said that the reaction is usually different when the similarities are pointed out.

"It doesn't mean you don't owe something to the original composer," he said.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

regardless of Coldplay's public statement, this is bound to get their lawyers to the table.

back to you

Having slogged through all the YouTube comments, I still have to resist the urge to educate some of those who comment on the news story. My take is that the lawsuit is designed/destined to get the lawyers and their clients to the table to negotiate a settlement.

This was an interesting article: Satriani vs Coldplay: what do lawyers say?

from Yahoo news a few days ago

In a statement on their website which came after Joe Satriani filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles last week, the band said any similarities between their music and the American strummer was "entirely coincidental."

"the American strummer" ~ that cracks me up~!

this T-shirt is fairly clever, actually

I'm working on a Satch 101 playlist to introduce Joe's music to some friends. This is what I came up with last night:

SWTA

Crowd Chant

Summer Song

Love Thing

Mind Storm

I Am Become Death

Look My Way

Hordes of Locusts

Big Bad Moon

ITLIS?

The Headless Horseman

Echo

Friends

12 songs, 54.8 minutes

I know everyone will have their own personal list of a dozen songs they would recommend or use to introduce Joe's artistry.

Blue_Moon you've made it very clear you don't care to discuss the Coldplay lawsuit in spite of it being a major news story picked up by every news wire outlet on the net ~ All Things Considered on NPR ~ this is an open forum: you're entitled to your opinion. Fans of Joe who choose to discuss the issue are also entitled to their opinion, so I am NOT asking you to be quiet. Likewise, those who want to discuss this will continue to post in spite of your objections.

Notice I say "fans of Joe" because let's face it no one likes to read troll posts

[...remember folks: be Very Careful not to feed these creatures~!...]

Furthermore, the response here on T2J has been overwhelmingly positive, so I for one don't care to be lumped into the group of "everyone with a computer". Me and my computer have been vocal in our support of Joe, while you and your computer have done nothing but complain about the topic. So my question to you is: WHY? What +_exactly_+ do you have against this being a topic of discussion?

Sincerely,

[Proud fan and supporter of Joe since 1996 and forever more]

*novjul bows low, kneels humbly before assembled fans*

...it seems i hit a nerve...

i made a mistake

even though i'm still curious what's bugging mckenna, i dint approach this the right way

my bad, straight up

it was not my intention to be a divisive force on this, joe's message board

i'm sure joe wants his fans to get along and not fight here on t2j

it's not worth it, and it's disrespectful to joe

if i've ever offended anyone here -- now or in the past -- please believe me when i say: i am truly sorry

...please forgive me...

it's true i've been gone awhile, but ~ with utmost respect ~ i'm not a newbie ~ i've been posting on t2j for over ten years

others have been here longer than me (roo) but it's not important how long or how continuously fans posts here

the important thing is to respect the artist who provides this space, and by extension all assembled fans of the artist, whether the post is your first or your umpteenth-thousandth

this i know: words spoken in haste can never truly be recalled

at this point i've done what i can to mend fences

i understand everyone will make their choices and my earnest yet potentilly futile efforts in the end are nothing but a breath of fine white sand on the whisper of the breeze

best thing is to learn, and move on

skippygirl, i recommend the thumb squarely in the middle of the back of the neck for maximum finger / string pressing strength. This was from my first unofficial guitar lesson, when I picked up the acoustic again at midlife (I knew a few chords, still do). I laid it down, but I've never forgotten that unofficial lesson from the mysterious stranger who first spoke joe's name to me.

blue moon - satch once mentioned he found a joe pass guitar book that was organized around the 12 notes, ie, it had every possible conceivable permutation of a C chord all in one place, and so on for every note

skippygirl - regarding sore fingertips, you have to play the guitar every day or you'll never build up the calluses you'll need to play ~ here's a tip from adrian legg: put a layer of super glue on the tips (allow it to dry completely before touching anything, especially your nose *s*) ~ this will give you some extra practice time

...just one more luni satch fan aren't we all...

~f

p.s. skippygirl, steve vai said he dint touch his guitar for two whole weeks before recording his solo "for the love of god" ~ he did this on purpose ~ his fingertips were on fire with pain exactly as he intended ~ something to think about folks

correction: I think vai's point was he wanted to be hungry to play his guitar, and he knew it would hurt but it was worth it
