Aparently you have a lot of fans, Zinc Master. It's just a lot to scroll through, for me.

"Could I simply post the hot link for the site - sure. But then, how many will actually link to it and read it?"

People who are actually interested in reading it (I'd imagine the same amount who actually read it now). I think the headline + your thoughts and a link would be interesting enough to make me want to click through.

I think the real answer is to have a forum like vBulletin http://www.vbulletin.com/, but I know the "power that is" really likes it this way.

Anyway, I'm really done now. Sorry for dragging this out, but I am holding you personally responsible for any damage done to my finger due to excessive scrolling, if you keep this up :-)

Do The Stu - I'm doing well. I'm doing more Windows apps development in my free time than playing guitar these days. It goes in cycles, though - probably as soon as Joe's new album comes out, I won't be able to put my guitar down... You seemed to have split from T2J right after you did the interview with Joe last year. How was the whole experience? BTW, I'm a HUGE Firefox fan as well.

Lovinspace_2004 - Joe did release EOC, SBM in SACD format, which is 5.1: EOC SACD @ Amazon.com SBM SACD @ Amazon.com

I think he also released ITLIS in SACD format, but I can't find it anywhere.

Joe - thanks for getting me through my taxes. I set up a playlist with all your albums, and listened to each, some more than once! Itemizing sucks, especially when you don't have everything organized...

Joe - http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/7037919/a/Super+Colossal.htm has a Super Colossal track listing that's out of order, and in place of "Crowd Chant", has a song title called, "Party On The Enterprise". Is this the same song as Crowd Chant?

Ya Yo Gakk - I'm in the middle of researching this, actually. There's a guy who claims on his Web site that it comes from the movie, Not Of This Earth. However, he's got a link to the 1988 movie - NOTE the album came out in '86. However, there is a movie called Not Of This Earth from 1957 as well, so maybe the guy is right and just linked to the wrong movie...

I've written to him to ask him where he heard/read this info. I'll let you know what I find out if Joe doesn't answer in the meantime.

I'd also like to know why the cover art was changed. I have this on vinyl with a space painting on it.

cheese101 - thanks for the info. Much appreciated. So I guess he was talking about the 1957 movie, then. I'm guessing he didn't see it in the theaters, though, since he was, what, 1 year old? :-)

zinc - sorry to hear that.

njbeast - Jeff did post on here - once, back in 2000 or early 2001. I was just looking at it the other day, but I can't find it now. Stu used to post a lot, talking up his then new album, "Outbound", calling himself a "ham", etc. :-)

webmaster - thanks for the info. BTW, I'm serious about my offer (check your email if you haven't already), but I completely understand if you can't help me out - I'll still give you the transcriptions, though, if you can use them.

mikesb - nice review. "I dare say the rhythm guitar intricacies in particular are at least as important as the lyrical lead playing". Interesting observation. I can't wait for this album!

Joe - "Theme for a Strange World" sounds awesome so far! Actually, everything sounds awesome so far. This album is going to be so good!

cuthbert1776 - really, wow, I had no idea. I picked it up for $1.99 at a used record store a number of years ago, and had it taped on the wall in my dorm room (my roommate and I made a border around the whole room with records that we both liked, but it's still in great condition). I'll trade with anyone who has Joe's original EP :-)

BTW, there's currently a cassette with the original artwork on eBay.

I'd love to see Dave LaRue post here. You can never have enough Daves :-)

BTW, my blog was linked to from Wired News today! I've got a Super Colossal countdown on it, so hopefully that will help get a little publicity out for the new album, at least.

The guy changed his Web site to reflect that NOTE's title was taken from the 1957 movie once I alerted him to the error. This was before Joe responded to Ya Yo's question, and the guy responded to me saying he forgot where heard the info. Thanks Joe, for the response!

I'm running into all this great information about the backgrounds of Joe's songs, but it's sometimes tough to get info from sources that I can verify. It's a cool project, though. I feel like I've hit gold every time I find out definitive info on a song (like finding out Tears in the Rain was inspired by the movie, Blade Runner!).

I hope to have the Web site up in a few weeks, albeit with lots of missing info. Hopefully I'll eventually be able to fill in all the details. I've got a ton of old guitar magazines on order, so that should help a bit.

I've read through about 30 online interviews so far, listened to four Rockline interviews, scoured through all the old T2J posts (skimming for blue text!), including all the ones that were still available at archive.org (I had totally forgotten that "Time" was first released on the Web!), read all the liner notes, took notes on Reel Satriani and The Satch tapes, got the ITLIS listening party transcribed, and have all of the SC Podcast (so far) transcribed. I think I'm about 10% done!

Anyway, sorry to ramble on, but I think I've got some really cool stuff so far, and I can't wait to put the site up.

I just wish I could sit down with Joe for about a day or two straight and ask him to fill in all the blanks! I may try to sneak a question in here every once in a while, though, but I want to try and make sure Joe hasn't answered it before first.

Satriella - I'm just a crazed fan, I guess (at least I see I'm not alone though, Gotta Have Joe! :-)). I was inspired by reading the book on every Beatles song, "A Hard Day's Write". After reading that book, I enjoyed listening to the Beatles songs even more than I already did. I wanted to be able to do the same type of thing for Joe.

Joe's got such awesome song names, and it's just so cool to find out what Joe ws thinking when he came up with some of them (like Luminous Flesh Giants - (quoted from Joe from a chat transcript) "That's in a similar vein to Flying In A Blue Dream or Surfing With The Alien. It's a combination of Dreams and half-hearted humorous day dreams about aliens, giants and monsters. I use that as a mental theme to get my musical point across.")

BTW, does anyone know Dutch? I did a Babelfish translation of this page, and still couldn't make heads or tails of it. I think one of the things they are saying is that Belly Dancer took 10 years to write?

Just found this resource: Google Book search: "satriani" Joe Satriani is mentioned in a SQL Server book! Cool. I've yet to comb through most of it, though.

About posting the whole thing here - that would take up a LOT of room! How about every post I make from here on out (until I run out of info!), I'll try to include a tidbit I found? That might be cool - then, if you know more about a song, post it and where you heard it, and if I can verify it, I'll credit you on my Web site (Joe, Jon, and a few select others don't need to tell me where they heard it. I'll just take your word :-)).

Satriella - "though much of the information may have lost its source by now" - yeah, I'm running into that a lot. There's a lot of good info, though, and I don't see a reason why people would lie, so I think I'll take the info and make a note next to it, something like, "told to T2J member 'Satriella' at a meet and greet" or something like that.

Ok, now I'm forced to post more song info! From an old bio here at Satriani.com (http://www.satriani.com/2000/about/bio/): "Champagne?" is a solo treatment of suspended chords as popularized by Keith Richards.

I love that piece - almost killed my speakers by turning it up too much!

I've got some more info on it - just can't find it now. Ugh. That was a weak one, so here's another weak one to go along with it - Hill Groove was conceived from Jamming along with a Lauren Hill song (from my memory of the SBM listening party) (only weak because I think most people know this already). Anyway, anyone know which Lauren Hill song it was?

After going through a number of interviews, I've noticed that Joe gets asked these questions (or variations of them) just WAY too much:

- what happened to your hair? will you ever grow it back? - what do you think about the future of guitar? - what was it like teaching Steve Vai, Kirk Hammet, etc.? - how did you get started playing guitar?

I don't know how Joe has the patience to keep answering these, but I guess it could really backfire on him if he said something like, "geez - I've answered that 50 times - do your research! What's the matter with you!!"

The only thing I've so far seen that's close to that is when Joe was asked if he could be trusted to play the blues (around the time of the Joe Satriani album). Joe basically said (not a direct quote), That's such a strange question. What kind of question is that??

I think he just usually gives really short answers if he doesn't like the question.

He also gets asked something like "Who are you listening to now" quite a bit, but this is a good question, as Joe listens to a lot of cool stuff, and he usually gives a different answer.

Song info: "Turkey Man" is about guitar tech Mike Manning. - posted by Joe on T2J, March 17, 2000. BTW, Eric Caudieux wrote this one.

JOE_FEVER - try this: http://www.rtqe.net/ObliqueStrategies/ It's what Brian Eno came up with for musician's writer's block!

Tony S - I took his comments as a joke as well. A really stupid joke that wasn't worth responding to.

Song info: AWMAWY was "edited the hell out of" because Joe was intrigued at the song's beauty. He had a distinct vision for the song, and "wanted to be as cool as the sax player you see in a nice jazz club" that doesn't rush and doesn't convey an ego. "I had to find that sort of player in me ... and then figure out the technique", Joe says in the book "Secrets from the Masters: Conversations with Forty Great Guitar Players" (page 227).

cosmic_ape - it's straight 4/4 (at least in the sample) (or 2/4 - I'm not sure how to tell the difference sometimes). Anyway, it's not odd time.

If you buy the album online at Sony's site, you'll get a free autographed booklet.

Suzie2000 - that sucks. Why would they restrict that? Actually, I just ordered another signed Super Colossal CD. I'm going to give it away at the launch of my new Web site dedicated to background info. on Joe's songs. Anyone who submits verifiable info. will be eligible to win a random drawing. Unlike Sony, I'll ship it anywhere, and for free :-)

I just got Joe's Anthology (I previously owned all Joe's released albums except for the compilation ones (Beautiful Guitar, etc.)). Anyway, paydirt! All 30 songs have background info on them, straight from Joe! I've got a bit more info to add from my research for some of the songs, but there was a lot of info here that I haven't seen anywhere else.

I'm not feeling the love here with getting help with background info on Joe's songs. Oh well - no worries. I'll stop posting about it here, and just let you all know when I put the site up (hopefully in a few weeks at the latest).

Satriella - feel better soon!

Webmaster - eagerly awaiting the next installment of the podcast.

Satriella - I'll keep posting. Just not about my project, or not as much as I have recently, anyway - don't want to bore/annoy people (though it's probably too late for that :-)).

Blue_Moon - I think if you put a few more exclamation marks in, Luini will respond :-)

Just got John Petrucci's "Suspended Animation". It's AWESOME. You just can't beat the way he articlulates the fast notes, and his distorted tone is perfect. I love it. I heard some people saying it sounds a lot like Satriani. I don't hear it (though I do admit that parts of track 6 are very Satch-like, in the SWTA days.)

BTW, if you're interested in buying it, get it at John Petrucci's site. It's much cheaper, and perhaps more money goes directly to John (and you get an order confirmation from Rena Petrucci!).

It sounds very Dream Theater-esque to me (wonder why :-)), but I wouldn't mistake any of the songs for a DT song, including the DT instrumentals.

Satriella - glad you're going to pick up John Petrucci's album. You won't be disappointed. Hey, that's the second album I'v talked about that you said you're going to buy. Hmmm.... The Bach 2000 box set is really great! And it's only $1,199.98! :-) I actually do own lots of Bach, but not this one (and certainly not $1,200 worth of it).

No podcast, and no Super Colossal in my mailbox. It's a good thing that I had a great day otherwise, or I'd be really depressed ;-)

from the Podcast: "After I finished it, I thought it's sort of like a tone palm (??), but not in the way you usually think of that phrase."

What's a "tone palm", or did I just mis-hear what Joe was saying? Or is he saying "psalm", since he talks about it being a kind of prayer just after that? And is this a common phrase? I'm so confused!

Powerslave214 - thanks. I still never heard of a tone poem, but thanks to you, I was now able to get Google results :-)

FYI, here's a decent explanation of a tone poem, if anyone else doesn't know what it is.

aliensurfing - if you're talking about "Super Colossal" the song, Joe explains it in the first installment of the Podcast:

"The idea for this one was to imagine myself 50 or 100 feet tall, walking through downtown with my giant guitar playing some really big riff, which is why I use this little thing called a POG here, which gives me a couple of octaves."

I'm sure he'll explain in more detail on the listening party.

mthead101 - you're welcome for the link - not sure which one you're referring to, though. "another" east coast rocker? I assume you weren't referring to yourself, as your profile says your location is Anchorage, Alaska :-) - or is that info incorrect?

This morning I was expirimenting with moving chord patterns around on my acoustic (in a sort of Jimmy Page style) - I started to sing this middle-eastern type melody over it. I've still got the melody in my head. That's got to be a good sign... Wonder if Joe ever gets his own melodies stuck in his head, and if so, how he feels about it, since he only listens to his music for reference?

Still no Super Colossal in my mailbox :-(
