Joe - just got Super Colossal! It sounds great so far! I knew I wouldn't be dissapointed.

Thanks for taking the time to sign 500 copies! I feel like a serious hardcore fan, even though I've never had the pleasure of meeting you - I've got SBM, ITLIS, G3 in Denver, and SC all signed from Sony's site! Actually, I think SBM may have been from winning a contest at this site, but anyway. I'm thinking about framing them all and putting them in my studio.

Wow - just saw Vernon Reid is coming out with an new album as well (coming out 4/18 on Favored Nations)! It's a great time for instrumental guitar, with Petrucci's album last year as well. All we need is another Vai album now.

Joe - just noticed something (on my 10th listen!), the scratches at the end of "Movin' On" sound a lot like the end of the Beatles' "I Am The Walrus" (umpah umpah, everybody umpah... or whatever they are saying). I know you said that the scratches just seemed to fit, but were you thinking about that song at all when you recorded that?

Anyone else notice this?

Max_Ibanez_RG27SP - Joe's first guitar was a Hagstrom. He doesn't have it anymore (I don't think). Last I heard, he was looking to buy it back if he could find it.

Did you ever find it, Joe?

It was pretty icy this morning, and when I slowed down (a bit too quickly) to take an exit ramp, my car did a 540. There were other cars on the road, and one right in front of me, and I was spinning around pretty fast. I'm fine - nothing happened, but it was the strangest feeling in the world. Everything seemed to slow down. I had 10 Words playing pretty loudly, but I could only hear scrambled notes. I wasn't scared at all (until after it was over) - my only thought was something like a nonchalant, "Wow, I could die." I would love to see a video of it, 'cause I must have just missed hitting a few cars pretty hard. Anyway, I ended up facing backwards, perfectly in the exit lane, and no cars we're coming at me at the time.

Do The Stu - welcome back. Looking forward to the review.

OCPS470 - Guitar 9 as well, perhaps. http://www.guitar9.com/

Ishta - I appreciate your honesty, but I really can't name anyone else who Joe sounds like. There are a lot of imitators who try to sound like him, but they ALWAYS fall short in one category or another, as far as I've heard. And I couldn't disagree more on SC being bland, but that's just my opinion.

Wasp2020 - thanks for the link. I'm always looking for this stuff.

Ishta - apology accepted about the mixup.

"I simply believe that the combination of joe with manu and nathan brings out the best in joe's music and playing".

Joe apparently didn't think so after 7 takes with them on Luminous Flesh Giants, after which he scrapped the whole band and re-recorded the song. However, the songs they do appear on are great. All I'm trying to say is that it doesn't always work out. I personally think Eric brings a lot to the mix, but it's all opinions. You've got yours, I've got mine.

"When i said he sounds like all the others, i meant he has parts of vai, schenker, hoey, shepherd, petrucci, etc... He has been too infuenced."

I would argue that it's mostly the other way around, and that most of the guitarists you listed would probably admit to that. But anyway, I don't think there' such a thing as "too influenced", especially if you're just taking little bits from everyone. Again, opinions.

I do listen to guys like Ron Thal (I've even interviewed him back in the day). Not a huge fan of Blues, but Ron is awesome, as I've said many times on this board before. Ron's got his own crazy unique sound, but so does Joe. I'd bet I could pick an unheard Joe song or solo out of a lineup any day.

Anyway, I'm glad you shared your opinion. It kind of feels like a cult when everybody just agrees with one another anyway. I don't think it was intended as a troll post, like cheese suggested, but if so, you got me, I guess.

In either case, I'm going to bow out of this thread now.

Another Rockline for me spent waiting on hold for the whole show :-(

BTW, gotta - you did great! Congrats!

Anyway, I guess I'll try asking my question here:

Joe - You always seem to do a few songs in odd time signatures, like The Meaning of Love, Flavor Crystal 7, New Last Jam, etc., which don't sound forced at all. Does writing in odd time come natural to you?

Joe - thanks for responding! Wow - didn't expect that. Well, you do a great job of making odd time sound natural. I'm always listening for that type of stuff, and I didn't even realize it on "The Meaning of Love" until I read the liner notes. A lot of prog rock bands back in the day seemed to do odd time stuff just for the sake of doing it. I've always admired artists like you, Soundgarden, and King Crimson, who all seem to use it because it fits best for the song. And it's really cool when you don't even notice it. Anyway, thanks again. You're the best.

Satriella - I was thinking about that myself, 'cause I've experienced that before this time, too, and the best explanation I could think of is that maybe it's sort of a fight or flight kind of thing, where if your body realizes that it's in a stressful situation like that, it just calms you down to help you try and do something about it rather than freaking out? I don't know - I know nothing about the medical field. Well, at least nothing happened to me, or my car, actually, so I was VERY lucky. You're accident seems like it was pretty bad. Were you ok after it? BTW, I like your new Hendrix drawing. You've got a lot of talent.

Satriella - it was just a few months ago, actually. Another car incident - I was crossing a lane, and this guy in a Mustang (who was plenty far back when I started crossing) just totally gunned it right at me, wheels squeeling, so I sped up to cross, only to skid into the direct path of another car. He slowed down, and I was able to compensate enough for the skid to be ok, but I remember looking at the guy's face as I'm skidding past his car, thinking, "be calm, just hurry up, turn into the skid". It seemed like slow mo, like I had all the time in the world to think it out. So weird.

So, anyone want to take a ride with me? :-) Seriously, though, I've never been in a car accident so far...

Ken - this sucks. Maybe Jon can get control of it (or make another one) and just post some basic info there, a link back to here, and a note saying that it's the only real Satriani MySpace site. That way, when people search for Joe, they'll hopefully see that site first, and just be directed here. I can't actually find the site myself - did you email webmaster@satriani.com to make sure Jon is aware of it?

MoJoe13 - pick up The Electric Joe Satriani: An Anthology, and you'll get liner note descriptions for 30 of Joe's songs. Time Machine also has some good liner notes, but doesn't describe every song. Don't know about compilations like "The Beautiful Guitar" or "One Big Rush: The Genius of Joe Satriani", or the remastered versions of "Surfing With The Alien" or "Flying In A Blue Dream". Anyone?

It's great to see so many new people here!

Shredinator - check out the rehearsal footage if you haven't already. Looks like there will def. be some new merchandise.

Crystal Jammer, ibanezfox - no notes on my copy either. I think it was just a mistake. If you listen to the Podcast, Joe talks about the song there. (I've got it transcribed, but my notes aren't with me - sorry).

Satriella - yeah, actually I lied. I was in a minor car accident once. Tiny fender bender - nothing to speak of. Yep, it's me doing the song info project. I'm really pleased with how it's coming along. In some cases, I'm getting background info on the background info! I think Joe fans will really enjoy it, and hopefully contribute their anecdotes as well. I've seen the Vault and the FAQ's - there's some good stuff there. Actually, I'm compiling a list of good links for Jon so that he can update the Vault section.

webmaster - great job with the rehearsal video. I really liked the interview with Dave LaRue, and hearing Joe play jazz was beyond cool. Thanks for doing this type of stuff. You must have tons of footage from these types of things. Any chance at doing a full feature DVD? BTW, do you know where the extra line break comes from at the top of some posts (like mine). Is it beause I'm using Firefox. maybe?

webmaster - any chance of putting up a transcription or audio for the latest Rockline interview with Joe? A lot of people couldn't hear the show, as many radio stations weren't carrying it for some reason.

PhryDom - wonder if this one will be named "Bam Bam". Joe said in an interview that he named "Fred" after Fred Flintstone!

"Vai: "A Fred pickup?"

Satriani: ""Yeah. You know about those? I had Steve Blucher (of Dimarzio) devise this pickup for me. We just picked Flintstones characters and named the pickups after them" - from http://www.theultrazone.com/articles5.cfm

Anyway, I think I like Ovation's suggestion for the pickup - Dino. "Dimarzio Dino" has got a nice ring to it.

gotta - did you download the latest version of QuickTime/iTunes?

Ken C - I LOVE the bee-bop part on Redshift Riders. Anyway, interesting review. Thanks for posting it. BTW, how long have you been a fan? I remember seeing your name on T2J from way back...

KenCampbell, catmean - wow, that's just an awesome story, and a good question about "Time", too, btw. Did you ever get an answer on that, from any source?

What a great, great song - I couldn't believe when that was posted online after the self titled album came out. I kept thinking, man, the next album is just going to be awesome, judging by this song. CP of course, totally rocked, but to me, Time actually seemed like it didn't fit in to well with the rest of the album.

If you don't mind me asking, how did John Riccio play into you two meeting?

Ken C - hey, thanks for the big explanation. Sorry, didn't mean to pry, though. I was actually more interested if you found the answer to your "Time" question...

Anyway, I like your album rating thing - here's how I rate them:

NOTE = 9, SWTA = 8, FIABD = 9.5, TE = 9.5, TM (first side) = 8, JS = 7, CP = 8.5, EOC = 8, SBM = 9.5, ITLIS? = 8, SC = 9.8

The JS album is my least favorite, but there's some incredible standouts on it, like "If", "Home", "Luminous Flesh Giants", and "Moroccan Sunset".

Joe - whatever happened to the vocal song, "Under The Falling Sky"? You seemed pretty excited about it in your July 1992 Guitar World interview, but you said you might not be able to sing it yourself. Ever think of giving it to another artist?

BTW, does anyone know what issue of Guitar Player Joe was talking about that reviewed his first album?

shredguy - there was news on EA's site about them releasing just the soundtrack to the NASCAR '06 game, but that was a while ago and I haven't heard anything since.

ICEMAN II - delay, don't you mean ECHO? ;-)

Just got that album, actually, but I can't bear to take Super Colossal out of my CD player. I'll probably listen to it in a few weeks, and post a mini-review.

Jon - GREAT job with the CD release concert. Joe, nice background music (just kidding, of course). I've got a bunch of links coming your way, Jon. I just need to organize them all.

HAC96818 - reposting your idea isn't going to affect Joe's decision making. He did talk about doing a symphonic-type of album before, but said he didn't want to do a Metallica S&M type of thing. He also said in another interview that he thinks guitar doesn't seem to fit right with an orchestra. Anyway, he definitely has thought about it, and if he can think of a way to make it work, I'm sure he'll do it at some point.

wwwdotcomhere - thanks for your help! What was your YouTube idea for Satriani fans? I didn't completely understand it. It might be interesting to post it here.
