aloha joe from honolulu, hawaii! we love you out here and are hoping either yourself or G-3 will schedule a concert here on the islands. The G-3 in Tokyo was outstanding as usual, and hey, hawaii is on the way. We are starved for good talent over here. The last decent concert I saw was ZZ Top back in the early 90's. As a physical therapist-bassist I find it awesome the way you handle the guitar and tailpiece. For your bodytype you have good size hands and long fingers with dexterity that is off the map! You truely are amazing! It would be great to see you live without travelling to the mainland, but I think thats what I'm eventually going to have to do. I can't say enough about your band. Of course, I am especially partial to your bass player matt. Could you possibly let me know the type of bass he plays? Much aloha and mahalo (thanks).

Alooooha Joe! I should change my nick name as I purchased a 4 striing Tobias bass and it sucked! I'll stick with Fender for now. Anyway, just got your new CD and I have not been able to stop playing it. Great basslines! Powerful! Your guitar work is outstanding, as usual. I cannot remember the last time I got a CD and liked every tract on it. I was checking out your 06 tour and was hoping Hawaii was on the list. You surf Joe? Hey, why don't you book a concert here this summer. If you and your band can take your eyes off of some of the most beautiful wahine (women) on the beach, maybe you can get a little surfing in. Some rest and relaxation. We are STARVING over here for you Joe! If I can't entice you with surfing, what about food. Good grinds over here. Please Joe, think it over. The local people would love you. The Tower Records where I bought your CD had a HUGE poster of your CD cover on the front door, and a mass of CD's on sale. I bet if I go back tomorrow they will be gone. I send to you many mahalos (thanks) and love from the islands. Bye for now. Da growler

IS JOE'S CD GREAT OR WHAT? You know, after reading today's message board I feel good about what Joe has done. Not all of you will agree with me, but JS is like a Porsche 911S Turbo. Small in stature, but dude if you pull up next to him on the line he will blow you away. As they say, Porsche, there is no substitute. A Porsche does not have to demonstate its power, speed, and torque at all times. It KNOWS its got the power. Joe, he knows he has the whole package, he has demonstrated it over and over again. This CD is awesome because it takes you down a road that you have never been before. You know Joe can rip-it, but like other guitar greats who happen to be very melodic in their style like Clapton, Trower, Bramhall 2, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, John Mayer, and yes Eric Johnson, he has injected some great blues-style bass riffs to contrast a different approach to his guitar work. This is not pure speed my friend, but muscle and power! In my point of view, as a bassist, I really thoroughly thought Joe's bass playing on the CD was excellent! I would love to see him play bass one day, but that will never happen. Joe, again, great job! I know you put alot of hard work into this CD. God bless, take care.

P.S. To all of you Eric Johnson fans out there. Fender will be holding it's 60th Anniversary Concert in Tempe, Arizona for two days at the end of this month. Features Eric Johnson, John Mayer Trio, Jeff Beck, and the Arc Angels-including Double Trouble and possibly Doyle Bramhall 2 if he can get away from the Clapton tour for a couple of days. Good Morning to the SatchWorld where EVERYBODY CHANTS! Enjoy reading everbody's thoughts and communications. This is only my 4th posting so I'm rather new to this site but I enjoy it. It brightens my day and gets me up to get down on the bass. Thanks Joe, webmaster, and one and all for your participation and positive energy. I dont remember who posted the story of Joe doing a show with a 103 degree temp, but it was great and I truely believe every word. Usually it's the guitar that reaches 103 degrees by the end of the second set! Hey 962 I'm the guy that made the JS Porsche analogy--I dont have a Porsche, but I wish I did. Only problem is is that I live in Hawaii where I cant open it up. So I settled on a 5.0 liter supercharged Mustang. It does the job. Anyway, I have a question for any of you who read this long entry, including Joe. Just trying to get a grip on the average age bracket out there. Who is Mel Schacher? If you know who he is can you tell me how he achieved the sound he got from the instrument he played? The second question I dont have the answer too. Help. Have a great week bruddahs and sistahs. Just got up and it's pooring rain out here in paradise.

MTHEAD 101 and PHRYDOM thanks for the info on Mel, I really appreciate your responses. He was my main inspiration for playing the bass back when I was dazzed and confused in the 60's and 70's.

AUSTIN3R a funky and surprising G3 would be JS, SV, and EC. Maybe not so surprising, as Clapton seems to be up for anything. The last time i saw him he played forever! I mean he LOVES to play. I'm not sure all would agree due to style variations, but a good suggestion nonetheless. Maybe JS will attend a Crossroads event like Steve Vai did last year!

962 my good friend. I will do my best to check out the 997 Turbo on the net. I checked with our local Porsche dealer and they dont carry it. Remember, I'm way out here in the middle of the Pacific! I'll check it out and get back to you.

Joe, you have a great wbsite bro. I am addicted to all the fine people with there love and support. It's not only your awesome guitar playing that everyone is in awe of, but your sincere heart, expression, and love for others. I have not even met you, but judging from your DVD's and web interactions you are a friend to everyone, and that is a special gift. I'm getting long winded again and I'm not even awake. Adios muchachos!

CIVGEEK Howzit bruddah! Hey, I live in Kalama Valley (Hawaii Kai) on Oahu, just about 1 mile from Sandy Beach. You know Sandys huh? The most notorious bodysurfing beach in the region. You definitely dont want to take JS there. Been to Kauai and they are under water and in real bad shape bro....check out the news. Thanks for the welcome

TULSACHOPS Love the Big Island. Will retire there when the time comes. Probably @ Volcano. Beautiful, quiet, hiking, biking. Plus you can play as LOUD as you like without the neighbors complaining!

JOE Let's have a concert over here with promotional free travel, hotel, car and ticket giveaways. How many people want to come to Hawaii for JS? Maybe on your way to Australia or New Zealand?

I'm now being scolded to get off the computer as I am becoming an addict. Fun talking story with you folks. Chao, Da Growler

AUSTIN3R-Like your lineup. EC, JS, and DG. Let's add a woman to the band for some eye candy. Just for the guys. The first that comes to mind is Sherly Crowe. Good voice, nice basslines, and great legs! What do you think? Any others in mind? They cant be lead guitarists, of course. Got a story about Clapton for you, but I'll save it for tomorrow. I B GONE. I guess I'm the only long winded one on this site. AUSTIN3R after the above statement I am burnt out. Storytime will resume in a day or two. I gotta get some sleep. I am anticipating Talk Story will include Clapton, Ozzie, and Tony Iommi of Sabbath. Some serious, some funny, and some just weird. I am outta here. GRRRRRRROWLER..........

Man, I'm off the site for just 1 day and all kinds of stuff is going down! I dont know where to start, but you all know I be long winded. Hopefully, I can get a little "talk story" going after I heat up the site for awhile. MRLONG I am no JS, but I am a physical therapist and strength coach among other unimagineable things. Until Joe answers your e-mail this is what you need to improve fine motor skills. You need to work fast twitch muscle fiber that address your thumb and digits or fingers. Yu need to do resistance training with weights to gain a stable base for the muscle tendons to work off of. This means high repetition wrist curls and reverse curls with dumbells, like AUSTIN3R (sorry, I could'nt resist, forgive me 3R). High reps means until it burns. Work towards 3 sets of 20 reps. What this does is improve your grip strength. That way yu will be strong enough that even though you miss the fret with your flying fingers your fingers will be strong enough to avoid the pitfalls of buzzing. Next, you will need a resistance ball to squeeze to work the intrinsic muscles of the hand. Not a tennis ball, but one made of some form of rubberized material. Theraband makes three different colors with three different resistances. Taking for granted that you are R handed squeeze the ball off and on tightly untill you burn. Shift if to (cont)

(cont) shift the ball to your R hand and squeeze between thumb and first finger. Now go try and play the guitar. Now, its going to take you about 2 weeks before you start to notice a power and speed difference, in fact you will notice that you will get slower on the guitar for awhile and then one day you will pick up the guitar and notice a significant improvement. Stretching is also important to increase your span, regardless of the size of your hand and digits. Manually, and gently spread your fingers apart and bend them backwards. This should be done ALL THE TIME. Stretching will become more important than strengthening as time goes by. Its very difficult to teach you in this way, but its better than nothing. That will be $100 please for the on-line program. Which brings me to the next subject.

WWWDOTCOMHERE- I see everybody's viewpoint on the CD subject. Of course, I have to put in my 2 cents. It is your decision on what you wish to purchase, dont be hard on yourself and dont let others be hard on you. We are all nice people on the site, but come from a variety of backrounds and jobs. We should not judge, but we do. This is the serious side of me. On the other hand, one day you may become manic and say to yourself if Joe's drummer can afford a Porsche 997 Turbo and an Italian racing scarf then how much money does JS have? But I will tell you one thing. IT IS ONE HELL OF A GREAT CD!

MR SATRIANI- I know you are on tour and very busy, but there have been a few political comments made about Bush and the Iraq situation. Would you care to comment? I would. But in an indirect way. Please excuse me as I am very andro but try to look at the situation in an objective way. First off everybody wants peace. Put the events of 911 back into view, because now they have been forgotten by most. If you select not to, turn me off. Flying aircraft into a building is an offensive as opposed to a defensive tactic. I can only relate this to you in a battle situation (martial arts). When someone is out to kill you in physical combat you must defend yourself or suffer the consequences. (cont)

(cont) This requires a counterattack or offense. Remember, a good offense is the best defense. Most all martial arts will use techniques to keep the enemy off balance or neutralized before landing the lethal blow. The arts have changed with UFC, K1, and Pride fighting etc. but Bruce Lee was right in his philosophy of fighting. I would love to see us pull out of Iraq, but what are our options? Anybody? Since we have had our troops in and around Iraq have we had any homeland incidents? No. Because we are keeping them off balance. When you are put into a defensive position not only do your odds drop, but the number of potential casualties also rises. Bush is implementing this tactic. Listen, I live pretty close to Pearl Harbor and take many people to the memorials. The Japanese launched a vicious attack on us back then and they paid the price at Hiroshima, but you know that we are friends now. The people in the military are fine people and many are friends and patients of mine. The know its their job to serve and many are anxious to do just that. Its their job. Its a difficult call to make, but I see no other options.

ZINCMASTER-Nice entry. Lets put it this way. There exists no good without evil. Your a weath of knowledge buddy!

AUSTIN3R-No time for "talk story". Will tell you about meeting with Clapton, the Oz and TI tomorrow. Out for now.

You know what gentlemen. There is a simple solution to all this price of CD's BS. Just make more money! I buy and download all the CD's I like, regardless. I carry a Sony Visa Card so I get points to buy more Sony products! I invest in my own investments. If you cant beat em take advantage of them. I charge everything to my Sony Card, I love it! I have 4 copies of his latest CD. One for my Sony Walkman, one for my car, one to play too in my music room and one for my office, oh and one for my wife because she loves it. By listening to the cd continuously I'm now able to play 8 cuts! To me this is a great investment. Next 2 cds up to bat are Leslie West's "Got Blooze" and the latest Robin Trower CD/DVD. First ever.

e-mailed Matt B. What a great guy, I am going to miss him. Just in case you bassists might be interested he plays a Boosa 5 string with Mark amp. Thats it! Satriella thinks I'm on something but I'm just fired-up for the Fender Festival in one week. Laters, GRRRRRRRRRROWLED OUT

OCPS470- Do you have some sort of physiology degree. Know and understand the extrinsics and intrinsics of the forearm and hand? You may be teaching guitar, but you folks come a dime a dozen. Yu have no supporting evidence to back your statements on speed improvement. Its not all done on the fretboard my egotistical friend. A firm base must be established before skill kicks in. In the scientific world , which you know nothing about, the levels are mobility, stability, controlled mobility, and finally skill. You are jumping way ahead of this student, so my advise is to shut up until you know what your talking about. GRRRRRRROWL! Typical mainland haole. Know it all, and no credentials to back it up.

CUTHBERT1776-Your first reply to my postiing was a bit aggresive. I respect your viewpoint, but yu still have not answered my question as to what our options are? Can you predict the future? Can you find the solution on CNN? The Patriot Act is a fine written document, but thats all it is. A document. In times of war and reality it is overlooked, and rightfully so. I bet your a liberal card carrying member of the communist driven ACLU.

TULSACHOPS-You also must be a liberal. You do know that Clinton was impeached. He is the one who got us in all this mess my means of inaction in the wake of numerous intelligence reports pointing to mid-east aggression towards the US. My good friend, who happens to be head counsel for the FBI here in the islands sites many oversites by Clinton. His problem is that he is a sex addict who was impeached for the wrong reasons. Its Bush who has to clean up his mess! I put no validity or credibility in your posting as your character and actions reflect the effects of heavy intoxication.

Additional comment: Anthony Robbins is a con artist, and his philosophy is common sense to most of us. The sobber ones anyway.

Now onto a brighter note. Sorry I had to be so bold in my previous posting but we cant all agree on everything. Education is paramount, especially research, and proven theory.

AUSTIN3R-It's finally "talk story" time. Without being long winded. I met Clapton in 1986 after he completed drug rehab and was touring to support his new release Behind the Sun (its so old I dont remember if that was the title or not). Anyway, I was working at a 5 star French themed hotel called Le Bel Age in West Hollywood, Ca. I was a front desk clerk, and I know Clapton had checked-in and my heart was beating like a rabbit. I worked the night shift 3-11pm and suddenly I emerged from the back office to find Clapton standing there reading his messages. It was slow on my shift, late, and nobody but EC and I. We started talking and I did'nt know what to expect or hear. His accent was almost hypnotic, as I really enjoy listening to the English, Aussie, and Kiwi accents-they are wonderful! He was there for about a week. He gave me tickets to his concert for my girlfriend and I. Of course, it was excellent. He played so long and so hard we actually had to leave before it was over! Every night he would stop by to pick up his messages and we would talk. We were both bored. He had no bodyguards and no other company. After all was said and done, after being held up gunpoint in my garage in Brentwood I was on my way back to Hawaii. What I took back with me from Clapton was a man who had gone thru hell and back. A strong man with a firm, strong handshake who taught me the importance of never being satisfied with your accomplishments, but to keep moving forward, experimenting, and as he put it "stretching". This is exactly what JS is doing and look at the success. He does not look at himself as a guitar god. He is humble, as is JS. The best are. When other musicians play with Clapton, they play with him because they love him for the person he is. Clapton does not walk on water my friend, only one God did that. It's the public, like yu and I who exalt him into this position. We discussed many subjects during this down time and I will treasure them always. Clapton is small in stature, but brother he is a GIANT when he straps on that Strat. Hang Loose AUSTIN. Next subject, the Oz. GROWL OUT

WOW, I really stirred up a hornets nest out there! This is the kind of party I like to play baby! You critics all have your opinions. I hold a BS in exercise physiology and anatomy, I have rehabilitated many a guitar, bass, ukulele players as well as drummers, from scratch. So dont give me that superiority complex crap assholes! Physilogically, I know more about building strength and speed into the hand and digits than any of you. Enough said. Dont have time to teach, not enough money in teaching.

Another point to all yu ignorant SOB's. What you gonna do when they come for you after we withdraw our troops? Now your on defense baby. Can you pull the trigger? Will you call out to your mama just before the RPG hits your house? Now whos lying on the table in the VA? You dumb ass'. I am no veteran. I'm proud of my country and the military. Hey, this party is getting better and better. I think peoples true feeling are being broadcasted. All of yu who responded to my posting(s), thank yu very much. Maybe I should start my own site. Before I signed in it was a bit dull. I can just feel the blood coursing thru my veins. There are some of you holding back out there, I can just sense it. Remember ladies and gentlemen, if you scroll back in time it was not I who casted the first stone. Check it out. I merely expressed my thoughts and view on subjects already mentioned. This is a fact. I shall drop my continued attack on the Bush Bashers because all of us are hardheads when it comes to politics. But you must admit it created quit a stir. I will not let CUTHBERT1776 of the hook.

I do not have the time to fully educate a guitar teacher in the basics of anatomical structure, physiology, muscle memory, proprioception, etc. etc. You need to start at the basics. Research EMG studies, do you know what those are? Get into muscle, tendon, fascia, bone structure. I remember going to an instructor like you. Almost all are the same. This dude was supposedly a Bass Master. We need to work on posturing and finger positioning and all this BS! I ended up having to give him a lesson on anatomy so he would be able to more definitively answer and instruct the pupil on how best to play. You are living in the past. The question is speed. Educate me in biochemical and physiological terms just how speed is conducted. I am challenging your superior knowledge hotshot. No input from others, research all you want, I'll wait. It is not going to happen guitar teacher. I bow down before neurologists, orthopaedic surgeons, doctorates of science, but no piss ant guitar teacher has more knowledge about how to train upper extremity speed than I do. All of you guitarists, if you are not training your abdominal core, the shoulder core, and the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of your forearm and hand, you are doing yourself a great disservice. As one of yu referenced Joes comments regarding the issue. Scientifically, as I explained before, speed and accuracy are two separate entities. The question was speed. PRE's are essential for quicker progress, and to reach your optimal potential as a guitarist. I have explained the program. Scroll back and take notes. You want to reach your full potential? Listen, CUTHBERT1776, you were rude and ignorant in the way you cut me off. I'm prescribing the supplement NEUROPATH to you. You can find it online. It helps stimulate the braincells function and bloodflow to the brain. Try it, you'll like it. Remember how I talked about Clapton, PRE's baby. GRRRRRRRROWLER OUT

OCPS470-Just read your entry(s) after my last entry. I think you misunderstand what I said. Weight training does not translate into "brute force". The stronger you are, the easier it is to accomplish work. Work=Force x Distance. If you are weak in lets say the 5th digit pinky you are going to have to bear down and use more force, energy and time to accomplish that simple task. This is common sense. You see, most people who instruct assume that the student has the strength to at least engage the cord. I for one had very weak 4th and 5th digits, plus the fact that I have nerve conduction deficits in my thumb. This was very difficult to overcome. I worked on it extensively and overcame the weakness. Some students are perfectly strong in all digits, but this is rare. Joe is saying that if you have the strength and engage the cord hard, this is a problem. But do you see my point. Strength is essential for playing, period. Not bone crushing strength, but strength enough to allow the student to jump from point to point stress-free instead of having to what Joe calls hammer. I dont care what dumb ass CUTHBERT says, she must think I want to turn the guitarist into a bodybuilder. Who knows. But she does not understand because she is living in the dark ages and is ignorant of science. Nobody expects Joe to know all the science behind what he is teaching.

Final point. I dont know squat about how to install a garbage disposal. When the repairman comes over to fix it I stand back, watch, and learn. I dont shoot of my mouth and tell him he does'nt know what he is doing like some people on this website do. I dont know what you people do as a profession, but I'm not going to insult my mechanic and tell him he is doing a poor job, when I dont know what I'm talking about. This is the way of the f...ing mainland haole. Dont be one of those.

Lets cut to the chase people. Some of you fail to get the point about speed training. Obviously, as the pure musicians that you are, you spent alot of time exercising and working out, not playing, doing drugs, drinking and partying. Am I right. I bet most all of you are very passive in nature, very judgemental, think your intellectual (maybe some are). I've explaiined the mechanics of speed, strength and how it ties into playing-several times. I will not go into the specifics because the authorities CUTHBERT1776 and OCPS470 will explain it to you in full detail some time in the next whenever.

I did'nt want to get into the Iraq situation, but I will. First I want to point out that you have justified the combative technique that I explained earlier, only on the net. Revenge, and superiority in the hearts of men. When I stuck my neck out and explained the combative technique. To make it simpler the best defense is a good offense. You came out swiinging with your attack upon me. I did not retreat and attacked a few of you, again offensively. Then all hell broke loose and everybody went on the offensive against the terrorist GROWLER, the cancer among us. Wipe him out. We hate what he is saying! Thank yu in and of yourselves for proving my point. If yu cant be aggresive physically than you most certainly can while posting. Good display of offense! Look what happened at my last postiing. I gave up. This is what is called giving up or tapping out in martial arts. You gave me a good ground and pound mates! Feel good? I sure do.

Lets get to the heart of the war conflict. Spiritually and Biblically speaking it began during the days of Abraham. Some know this, others do not. Isaac and Ishmael were his two sons. One was blessed above the other(Isaac) and Ishmael was sent away with his mother. (cont)

(cont). Isaac was renamed Israel. Ishmael was sent off with a blessing that he would establish a great nation. You can see where this is leading. To make an extremely long story short. Friction developed between Israel and the other nations. The Bible makes it clear that the Jews are the people of God. Israel is very small in contrast to it's surrounding neighbors but is extremely powerful-especially its military. There are Christians, Muslims, Jews, Mormons, etc. etc. Usually those who are faithful stay at peace, but there are those who drift from their religious beliefs and some become highly aggressive seeking worldly goods, power, money, success, etc in a militant fashion. Now, before 1935 there were no countrys named such as Iraq, Iran, Afganistan, east of Israel. It was all Israel's land, but under British rule. The occupants of the territory, for monetary reasons, forced Britain to establish boundaries. Thus forming the geography as we know it. This is just a sideline. In time the Muslim prophet Muhammad came along and was apparently killed by a Jew. Obviously, this was not good. Now the Muslims who have their temple and the Jews who have their temple in the same proximity are at war. According to the Bible, this war will not stop. The US is a strong supporter of Israel. We have many of Gods choosen living in the US. As we are in this position, militant Muslims, not true belivers or followers will stop at nothing, nor will they be satisfied until Israel is destroyed. We support Israel, we are powerful, we are a hinderance. We became a target. Now, the Bible is full of prophecy, and not one prophecy has not come to pass. Resource the Book of Revelation and read it. There will be a time when all nations east of Israel will come against her, even Russia (Gog and Magog) with huge armys and will mount a great offensive. But it will be crushed. Israel will always stand. The crown jewel of the world. So wars will come and go. The wars going on now are nothing in comparison to whats to come. Pray to God that you are not around in the end times. This is the root cause of this war. More later Over and Out

I apologize for voicing my views, however varied they are from the bulk of the entrys. But, as I said before, I did not cast the first stone, scroll back. I was attacked by a hornets nest for expressing views that conflict with yours. Now lets see who comes up with apologys. SATRIELLA did not even offend me, yet apologized. This is a woman with integrity. It would be interesting to learn what alot of you do for a living. Any takers?

GUITARKIWI-Will not respond to the religion issue, but I will to the rugby issue. As I said before, I work with a kiwi and all I here about is rugby and the All Blacks. I have seen numerous tapes at his house and pretend to enjoy the game. He's such a great guy, I hate to offend him. I'm currently teaching him American football. He loves it! You play rugby? Watched American football? I've played both. Quite a few tournaments here in Hawaii due to the Samoan contingent. Mate, until you suit up with "body armour" you will never know what a real hit feels like. Because you can unload on your opponent with a much higher velocity. This is called a good "stick". This is what my friend likes the most. Second, the size variation is tremendous. For example, my nephew, who is Samoan, Hawaiian, Chinese, and Caucasian plays for the University of Hawaii. He is an offensive lineman. He is a college student, as a junior he is 6 foot 5 inches tall and weighs in at 350 pounds. He runs the 40 in 4.9 sec. I never invite him over for meals because he can eat 3 extra large pizzas in one sitting and still have dessert. When something like that hits you mate, your lucky to remember your name. Peace to all, Good bye and keep on truckin

SIFUGUITARMASTER; Grasshopper, to graduate from this academy you must first pass a test. If you can, snatch the satch guitar pick out of the palm of my hand.

STUDENT: But Sifu, I have been here for a long period of time and have not been able to accomplish the task, I'm to slow.

SIFUGUITARMASTER; Do not be discouraged grasshopper, I have not been able to snatch the pick either. Only one man has been able to accomplish this task and graduate the academy. He is a man well trained and possess' many tricks....His name. Satrianisan!

Hey Captain Dave. You have been to Hawaii and know a little slang. You guys out there dont really fully understand my FULL statement do you. Just bits and pieces, but yu shoud be able to put it all together. This describes pretty much what most all of the guys are who participate on this website that are not kamaaina's, but know-it-all haoles. Maybe yu fit the bill too Davie! Its like talking to a brick wall out there! Cast off Captain and anchor way outside.
