Is it possible to scrap the java chat that exists now for an irc channel on a server like dalnet?

I think members would enjoy that better than the current system. There are more options with irc, people can use various irc programs and you can put a simple java chat applet up for the novice users who don't know or simply don't want to use an irc program. Right now, there is a rather annoying beep everytime someone types.

If you guys are pissed off at KGON for not broadcasting the Satch interview as scheduled, you can email this guy and complain: "Clark Ryan" <cryan@entercom.com> (He is the program director)

Apparently, they rather play a set of contrived top rated music than help promote new music and artists. I consider this a complete lack of respect for Satriani and us the fans when we are pushed aside like this.

civgeek,

If you turn your speakers off, you can't listen to anything (like the new CD). IRC is a text based chat system which has been around for a very long time. One programmer has made an irc program call mIRC, but there are many others which work well. It's just an interface which allows you to connect to specific servers. mIRC is the most common and you can do a lot of modification to suit your needs. Plus, there isn't that annoying beep.

DotNoir,

I agree with you. I will never buy a cd from companies listed at http://www.riaa.com/about/members/default.asp

I have copied the listening party, made mp3's and am more than willing to pay Satriani face to face twice what the store price is for his music.

Justification:

Think of it like a circle, put your money at 12 o'clock. Put Satriani at 9 O'clock and Sony at 3pm. Now which direction would your money go? CLOCKWISE. Straight to the record company, then the artist. It should be COUNTERCLOCKWISE, it should go to Satriani first and then to the record company.

We get paid from our company first, and then we pay our bills. Our company doesn't pay our bills for us, so why does the artist have to take the scraps from the record company? It's total B.S.

Darxmac,

Your assumption that buying CD's is the only way to put money in Joe's pocket is exactly what the third party wants you to believe. How come there are so many wannabe Satriani fans out there who make CD's on their own?

Read up on Branford Marsalis, read up on why musicians are taking things into their own hand. While you pay for your CD, Satriani gets a fraction of the cuts. If he does it all, he can get it all. Wouldn't you rather he get ALL versus a fraction? You obviously didn't read my point about the direction of where the money goes. It doesn't go to Satriani first, and it should. He is the artist, and he is the creator of his work. Now you want to finance a third party to copy his work and sell it?

You are making SONY very very happy by buying through them. Satriani is touring, and he can get off the stage if things don't go right during a performance. However, once his music is recorded, it no longer is in his hands. He can't just go to every store and say 'Look, I am not getting my FAIR SHARE. Take MY music off your shelves.'

Let's give Satriani his fair share through other methods. I am sure if you buy a Satriani model guitar, more money goes into his hands than a stinking CD which has a 10 cent value before the music is on it. Then, after the record companies STEAL the musicians' music, they mark up the value of this CD and give the musician a fraction.

Give a kid a free guitar lesson, same value as a CD, 2 if you are good, and maybe they will buy Satch gear.

Let's call a spade a spade. The record companies are crooks and thieves, and I REFUSE TO PAY INTO THEIR HANDS.

death cube k,

The point is record companies DO take advantage of the artists, and people like you appear to like financing their car payments (a car can be worth 500 guitars).

If the artist were to speak out about this, it would only hurt them in the end and they wouldn't get the fraction of their fair share they deserve.

death cube k,

How much does a blank CD cost? 10 cents? in bulk 5 cents? Let's stick with 10 and do the math.

You gave 15, yes I did read your insulting comments, as the price for a CD. Let's use that.

WOW, 150% mark up. Kinda nice, wish I could do that with my part time job. How do you know you aren't contributing to money which goes towards car payments? How do you know they aren't going towards a second, a third, a fourth car???? If I am such a moron, and you are such an Einstein, explain how you know where your money is going. Did you also know your tax money goes to transporting the president and his cronies around the world while the government can't even afford to give its employees an email address?

death cube k,

"Critics allege that the RIAA is, in effect, an organized cartel which artificially inflates and fixes the prices for CDs."

"In 2005, the RIAA sued Candy Chan of Michigan, for the actions of her daughter, 13 year old Brittany Chan. When the court ruled in favor of the mother, dismissing the case with prejudice, the RIAA proceeded to sue Brittany Chan's daughter. The case is pending in federal court."

Yes, I understand the industry fully. If you don't voluntarily give up your hard earned money to it, it will come after you and your kids.

liquidguitar,

I didn't download anything. The listening party is streamed and free to listen to.

death cube k,

Let's see, the crime you think I committed is stealing (13.95 worth CD). Are you saying record companies don't steal a considerable amount more than this or do you apply double standards when you can't debate?

I felt good back in high school when I bought magazines and any gear (nothing major at the time but it adds up). To me, those are things Satriani contributed to and I am sure he was compensated for his time the way he wanted. Buying a CD or tape (at the time) just makes me wonder how that money gets redirected to Satriani. While you probably feel good buying a CD, thinking it goes to the right people in the right amounts, you haven't been able to substantiate yourself. You think the case I mentioned was piracy, but there is no evidence that music was actually on her computer. What if it was a copy from a CD, and she did it so it could be part of a playlist when listening to music and using the computer? We have no way of knowing the music was "stolen". I am sure musicians don't expect everyone to buy CD's they already have tapes of. So, anyone experienced with computers could easily play into their computer and make mp3's for personal use. In that case, they have already paid and I doubt musicians want to stop this. What I am in agreement with is the complete copying of an entire album should be avoided unless there has been some form of payment. I have never done this. I would however opt to buy invididual songs, making my own CD (perhaps from the setlist on this site).

Now, I continue to talk politely to you and ignore your insults. I give you the data, and it is up to you to you to continue with the ad hominem attacks or actually address it intelligently. I won't go to your level.

GuitarRuck,

Anarchy you say? Well, I am an anarchist in other ways. However, we're grown adults. If we can turn on a computer & make a setlist, why can't we purchase ONLY the songs we want from that setlist? That doesn't even come close to my idea of the stereotypical view of the word "anarchy". In fact, Joe, like Branford Marsalis could feature other musicians.

For example, say you don't have his last 3 albums and you like 3 songs from each. That's 9 songs, about three short of a CD. So, either you could get 3 older tunes, or pick songs from a select group of guitarists Satriani has chosen to feature.

The customer is happy, they have the songs they like, the record company is happy, they have sold a cd, and the guitarists are happy, they are having their music heard because people wanted to hear it and not because it was on the album. After all, the customer would have chosen what they wanted to hear.

Another thing Satch could do is put up new versions of older songs, or add a few live songs onto the album. In this current album SC, there are about 4 songs I like and the rest are sort of growing on me.

And that's too far? Anarchy?

We need to fix this shitty tour schedule. Satriani, if you are going to go on tour with a CD you pumped out last year, then you need to show us a full schedule. What is this G4 crap without Vai or Morse? I will be in the US in August to November at least. I want to see some more dates. None of this crappy G4 rubbish. Let's see a real tour schedule. Show us at least 10 tour spots.
