Hi, I'm new among the community, I'll quickly introduce myself, I live in New Caledonia (east of Australia, french island, but I speak english since I'm eight) And Joe is the reason why I picked up my guitar at age 14, though I have been listening to his music since I'm 12 with surfing with the alien, I now also listen to a lot of Hendrix, Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen, Van Halen (roth era), Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and other heavy metal bands. I learnt classical piano at age six until age twelve, then I stopped, I resumed music at age 14, and started learning scales at this year, and thanks to classical piano, I am doing really well, I understood the theory, now all I need is to remember all the patterns. I'm today sixteen, and I practice at least two hours a day on my guitar after school, and sometimes I play for about six hours on one day of the week-end. Now I'd like to ask a question, I know my technique is yet poor on the guitar, though I am learning and doing ok with Damage Control of John Petrucci, but I cannot figure out, on the solo of Crushing Day, right at the beginning, which fingers to use when moving the melody an octave higher, on the twelfth fret, I tried to strech my hand and play with the forefinger, middle finger and ring finger, but I have the feeling this position is uncomfortable, and inappropriate, I tried to play with the forefinger, ring finger, and the little finger, but I fail to do my hammer ons properly and in my book (the best of Joe Satriani by Dale Turner, which is a really good book) it doesn't say what position I should use for my hand, so my question is, how does Joe do it? And what tips could I have to achieve this?... I would be glad if someone could answer me, because like a lot of times, right now, I feel like something is pushing me down no matter what, which is very frustrating... Thanks a lot and sorry for the mile-long message.

Thanks a lot Satriella, I can so only hope a straight answer from Joe Satriani himself, but I'm sure he's already got too much of this kind of questions. I won't lose faith, but it is so difficult for me to find these answers, has anyone looked up New Caledonia on the map? lol, it's a drop in the ocean, go find a guitar teacher that can help me in my country... I have so many questions... I decided to pause my learning of the scales right now, to focus on my technique, like sweep picking etc... that's why I am interested in buying Rock discipline of John Petrucci, so please, keep that DVD you have for me, I might write an offer... Cheers, I'm disconecting to go practice on my guitar...

haha, Satriella, if you wanna find my place, look for an island, perfectly east of Brisbane Australia, 2 hours away by plane, it's REALLY small and I mean it! Anyway, thanks for replying nicely :)... Anyway, I gotta go, my guitar's waiting, I still haven't figured out how to put my fingers on my guitar to play crushing day's solo on the twelfth fret...

Here's an idea to all you composers out there, and it would be nice if Joe could comment on that idea: Last year in December I was walking around in Tokyo, looking in Suidobashi's area to find myself a nice Ibanez RG serie to buy, because I needed the floyd rose tremolo, and a better guitar than my old Squier Strat, and so as I was walking distracted by my own thoughts (I was thinking that I missed Joe's G3 which happened a few months earlier, you understand I was really troubled by that thought since in my country you don't get much chance to see Joe, Steve, Petrucci, or any heavy metal band I listen to...), so as I was walking, I didn't pay attention, and a car passed really close to me since I was crossing the road while the sign said not to walk, and the driver sounded the horn telling me in Japanese I should be looking where I was going. And after a while walking after that event, in all the chaos of the busy city, I had a funny thought, I thought to myself "Why not make a song, called 'Traffic'? That's an idea, I would start by the sound of a businness area (I slightly inspired myself from Joe's Surfing with the Alien) then I would thrown in a main melody, representing someone walking in a busy place like Tokyo, and have the drums represent steps, or noises from the street or something like this, then another little melody that would only appear once in the song, representing something like a rush, or anything, and then, I'd put a solo, representing someone (like me) having a car passing real near himself, and the car can be represented by many things (I thought a lot about it), it could be with edge of the pick taping and stereo settings making the sound appear on one side of the head phones and then go to the other and fade, or like in Van Halen's 'Somebody Get Me A Doctor' when Edward uses (I think) a volume pedal, plays a chord the volume off, then pushes the pedal, and so the chord becomes progressively audible, and it makes it sound like a car passing, and finally, the sound of the horn could be achieved with the tremolo bar. Then the song would go back to its main melody, and have a final impro if possible, or have a pre-thought finale." And the Funny thing is, I only discovered later, that Joe's main insperation came out of moments like these, so I was stunned by the coincidence! So here it is, I threw in my idea, I'm hoping to have a comment from Joe, and many of you guys out there trying to make a song using this plan I made... perhaps we could organise a contest, and we could decide which would be the best interpretation of "Traffic". Maybe it sounds crazy I know, but hell, it's been on my mind for too long... Cheers!

About my idea...

I think it could be more than possible to do my idea, it doesn't require much actually, all you need is a distortion like my marshall drive master, to get lots of gain, and a multi function pedal (less effective on stage that's true). So in the end, there is just one pedal you gotta push for volume, and then you play! Of course, as I said, it would be good to put the sound of cars or people at the begenning of the song, or even (I thought about it today) put the sound of those things that ring for blind people to cross, they produce a regular beat that could be taken over by the drums. But of course that sound effect would be irrelevent maybe to put on stage, so if playing it live I wouldn't put that sound effect...

Hey All,

I'm sixteen and learning scales (and doing good thanks to five years of classical music/piano) and I'd like to know if you guys know the best of Joe's books to learn his scales trick, because I know how to solo with scales, I know what scale or mode to use on a given chord, but I'd like to know some extra tricks, and I heard Satch had a particular way to use his scales and modes, so which books could I use, and also which books could teach me his tricks with the digitech whammy and tremolo bar to do all the crazy wails?

Cheers,

962: Does the book you recommended teaches stuff with the tremolo bar and whammy at the same time, or would you recommend to buy a second book that you know?

Cheers...

962- yeah I was referring to the digitech whammy pedal, because I think I saw satch combine it with his wang bar, but I can't really figure out what his done...

Now other question, does anyone know a song where you hear pinch harmonics played REALLY fast? I'd like to check it out if someone knows (I'll give the reasons later), and I know there's some guy that does two handed taping with the both hands holding the neck upside down (opposite of Van Halen who's got both his hands on the top of the neck) but I dunno who it is, does anyone know?...

Cheers.

Cosmic_ape- Yeah, that's what I was thinking about, I believe I found a way to upstroke my harmonics, all I need now is practice, you wanna know how fast I want them? VH fast! Like when Van Halen in Eruption picks really fast high on the neck, or John Petrucci's favorite move, picking really fast, that's the speed I'm aiming at...

cosmic_ape- Hey I practiced today and it worked, I manage to play my P.Hs even, and VH picking fast, I figured out how to sound up strokes! Proud of myself! :). Of course I have a nice over drive pedal marshall drive master that help me out, to get lots of gain, but I haven't cranked it up to the max. Now that I succeed all my PHs I gotta practice playing different frets, caus I've been manly focusing on picking play the hell outa one note again and again in the last two hours, but I'm sure I'll soon be able to play a whole melody, the problem is you gotta move your hand up and down the string to do PHs... so I gotta practice moving my picking hand... ah well...

Oh and the guy that does does double handed taping I am talking about does that on a regular guitar, unlike Batio... But you made me discover Batio, so thanks! :D

I know a ask a lot of them, but I have a question...

Since I'm all by myself, and trying to record stuff, does anyone know any program free, that enables me to put drums in my recordings, without having to find a drummer in my town and ask him to take all his stuff to my house freaking my parents out? Like just a program I can use to make by myself the drums on my computer?... (If possible is there the same thing for bass guitar?) cheers...

A few ways to know you're a coffee adict:

You answer the door before people knock. You get a speed ticket while parking. You ski uphill. You speed walk in your sleep. You have to watch movies in fast forward mode. You're so jittery people use you to make their martini. Your coffee mug's all worn out.

And others to come

Ok, now I know this sounds crazy, who would ever want to come to that hole I call home, but since Deep Purple has concerts over here, maybe Joe can have one too... IS THERE ANY CHANCE, THAT JOE COULD COME TO NEW CALEDONIA? (look on the map, east of Brisbane Australia, small island) Like, if there is any show in Australia or Japan, how about a little extra show around here heh?... I've been listening to Joe since I'm 12 years old, he is the reason I changed my piano sessions to guitar sessions, and I want to see him, I live so far, I'll never get a chance to see him otherwise, all my friends around the world see him but not me, and other buddies have been to Iron Maiden concerts in Germany, and the Deep Purple concert in New Caledonia supposed to happen this year was cancelled. Please. Come to New Caledonia, there are more fans than you believe, try and see...

I have a question for anyone who already asked Joe since I know he doesn't have the time to answer such a useless question... but hum, has Joe met the avant-garde buckethead? I'm curious about that guy, caus he's got talent, and yet does this dumb stuff about wearing a bucket and a mask, but I'm convinced he isn't crazy, he just does that to get attention, he's probably just some eccentric annoying person that wants to get heads turning his way, and doesn't believe any of the silly stuff he's saying... So since I never had an answer to that, does buckethead really believe what he says? Or when he gets personnal with co-workers he just gives the whole coop thing a break...?

that's it.. hope someone knows =O
