Review from AMG:
Review by Rob Theakston
The most frightening thing about "Super Colossal" is that it starts off sounding horrifically similar to the chorus of Billy Squier's "The Stroke." Thankfully, this is remedied immediately, and Satch returns to familiar territory. The sound of the title track is big and booming, but the tone and delivery are instantly recognizable. Satriani doesn't pull any new tricks out of his bag, but lets his fingers do the talking throughout most of the record. And, of course, it wouldn't be a Satriani record without a few midtempo numbers thrown in for good measure, and "It's So Good" certainly delivers a swaggering punch that is reminiscent of not only Flying in a Blue Dream but moments of protégé Steve Vai's epic album Passion and Warfare. There are moments of delicate frailty and instrumentals with a romantic and optimistic feeling, tempering the high-energy blues-driven guitar shredders and leaving Super Colossal with a nice sense of balance — except for the album's finish. "Crowd Chant" is arguably one of the weirdest moments in a career full of eccentricity, but it's painfully out of place. However, with its catchy melody and call-and-response verses, it's going to make one heck of a concert singalong. On the whole, Satriani really doesn't push boundaries or stretch his guitar vocabulary too much here, but even on his worst day his productions could best any other shredder du jour based simply on the fact that he crafts songs rather than insipid guitar-scale exercises to flaunt and flail around carelessly.

I also enjoy the whole package of great fills of add. guitars and keyboards.
Joe... can you tell me how you played this unique Slide sound on "Theme From A Strange World"... it sounds partly like a keyboard.

I got my DVD today.....
what I can say... the music is okay, but not so good like Live in San Francisco. The sound quality is poor... very loud and compressed.
Sorry, Joe..... not the best day in Anaheim.

Well... I have all records by Satriani, and Super Colossal is one of the best records, particulary the first half.... and Stach is my favorite guitar player!!!
The new live DVD is no comparison against Live in San Francisco...... but I miss the magic moments on this recording. I also think the over-layered arrangements cannot played live and they sound live so thin.
Just my thoughts.

Unfortunately I missed the SC tour... maybe you have seen a great concert... and maybe Satch & Co. had a "bad" day during the Live recording..... My favorite tour?.... The Extremist Tour... an awesome performance by Satch.

Hi Satriella,
when I heard the SC podcast the first time... I was so happy about the upcoming record. SC belongs to my 4 favorite records by Satch (Surfing... Extremist... Flying).... so I had very high expectations when I read the annoucement from the new Live DVD. SC is filled with layers of guitars, which makes it impossible to reproduce the arrangements on stage (IMO)... Well, it's just my opinion.....
Anyway I can't wait to the next studio album!

@mikesb
it seems you have checked my favorite keyboard players.... well, Don Airey was great when he recorded Colosseum's Strange New Flesh. I don't like his playing on the Deep Purple's last records....
and don't say Gary Morre is bad, after you have not heard Corridors Of Power! One of the best Hard Rock Guitar records ever made!!!

Right... Inga Rumpf was a very good blues singer... the best from Germany...... but a long time ago. I also remember the old Atlantis records, like Ooh Baby and others....but Frumpy 2 was the best in my opinion.

I wish... the next SATRIANI studio record is NOT so compressed like Super Colossal !!! I think SC is one of the best records Satriani ever recorded, but the sound quality is not as good as I expected. Particulary the sound on the title track sounds shrill and bright.
I hate this kind of modern loud mastering !!!

I have heard Surfing with the Alien (upcoming Legacy edition) was remastered by Joe himself.
I hardly doubt it's an improvement against the MFSL Gold remaster, the regular Sony remaster or the tracks on the Anthology (great sound by Bernie Grundman)
Sorry.... I don't understand why musicians must do the mastering!!!
Probably it will sounds like a brickwall... loud and compressed!

...and please:
NO LOUD MASTERING of the new record.
Most modern mastering sounds shrill, compressed.
I would like to hear an audiophile masterpiece like Not of this Earth. Well recorded!!!
